MilkWorks opened our doors ten years ago this month shortly

annseacrest
Ann Seacrest

Executive Director

after the US Surgeon General issued a Breastfeeding Blueprint for Action calling for community support for breastfeeding mothers. Seven Lincoln women took this document to heart and decided that if mothers were going to be encouraged to breastfeed, they needed to have a good support system once they left the hospital.

MilkWorks was developed as a free standing, non-profit organization (we are not affiliated with any hospital or doctor's office) so we could serve all women and grow and develop based upon the needs of Lincoln families.

It is hard to believe that our first babies are now 10 years old!

We started out in 1,000 square feet and saw 100 mothers for consultations in the first year. Over the past 10 years we have expanded our space 4 times and now provide lactation care to approximately a thousand mothers a year. We have done this without monthly fundraising letters and without insurance reimbursement for lactation consultants - a true testimony to the grass roots efforts, dedication and passion of our staff.

Until we opened our doors, breastfeeding support in our community was minimal.

Ten years later, we are proud to say that there is much more lactation help available to moms. We hope that we have influenced this. There should be many places that mothers can get help. Everyone needs to know about breastfeeding and mothers need to receive support from many sources. One organization that has worked hard for over half a century to keep breastfeeding alive is La Leche League, a mother to mother support group. As we stop to honor women who have made it possible for all of us, it is fitting that we pay tribute to La Leche League.

The US Surgeon General released a new Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding  in late January. We are pleased to report that lactation consultant helping a mom breastfeedimages from MilkWorks are included in the report. A photo of our own Suzy Meyers helping a mom was the first image projected on the screen at the  web cast of the national press conference. This is a great way for us to step into the next decade of helping moms.

Stop by and say hello during our Open House February 1 - 10. We will have fresh cookies and milk (the cow kind!), special markdowns and a 15% sale at babyworks, and daily drawings for a gift certificate. Plus you can vote for the winner(s) of our 10th birthday t-shirt contest!

As always, we appreciate your support. It allows us to continue to help the next mom who walks through our doors.

Stay tuned for more celebrations  -  and thank you for ten years!

Ann

Breastfeeding and the State of Nebraska

Breastfeeding was a lively topic of discussion before the Judiciary Committee at the state capitol on January 26th.

NE capitolState Senator Annette Dubas, of Fullerton, has introduced Legislative Bill 197, which simply says a mother "may breast-feed her child in any public or private location where the mother is otherwise authorized to be."

Similar measures have been introduced in Nebraska since 2005 but have failed to advance from committee. Nebraska is one of only two states that has not passed legislation to protect a breastfeeding mother.

According to Senator Dubas, "In 2011 it is pretty ridiculous that we are having this discussion, but it's important that we have it. We are still talking about the most natural thing in the world - mothers taking care of their babies."breastfeeding mom

LB 197 is one of 4 measures that have been identified by the Nebraska Medical Association as part of their goal to reduce the rates of childhood obesity in Nebraska.

What can you do to help? Email or write your state Senator and encourage their support! We'll also keep you posted on the outcome.

Parent Information Center

Every new parent has questions about breastfeeding. Unfortunately sometimes those questions come in the middle of the night. Just when you misplaced your breastfeeding book or the dog decided it was his favorite chew toy! Who can you trust when everyone else is asleep? You can always google HELP! But who knows where that help is coming from?

MilkWorks to the rescue! We have dozens of informational handouts on our web site. Most of the handouts have been developed by Dr. Leeper, our breastfeeding medicine specialist, and our Lactation Consultants, based upon our ten years of practice at MilkWorks. The rest come from other reputable sources. Our Parent Information Center is designed to tide you over until you can call MilkWorks - or come in to see us. We also have a hard copy of the handouts next to the weigh station in our front lobby.

Who answers the phone when you call MilkWorks to ask a question? One of our trusty Breastfeeding Educators (BEs). They are all very

breastfeeding educators

knowledgeable about basic breastfeeding information and have all breastfed their own children. Unfortunately, they are not able to problem solve complex breastfeeding  concerns and will refer you to one of our Lactation Consultants if this is what you need. Why? They are educators, not clinicians. Plus, we want to make sure that you get help that meets your unique needs. Sometimes a bit of information is just not enough to fix what is going on.
