Greetings!
The mission of MilkWorks is to create a healthier community by helping mothers breastfeed their babies. Nothing in our mission says that we are here to criticize parents who feed their babies formula. Our goal is to help create a community that supports mothers who choose to breastfeed. Every day I see and hear subtle ways our culture does just the opposite.

Children form their opinions of life from a very early age. We learn from those who raise us, from images in books and magazine ads and billboards, and from comments on TV and the radio. So when my 15-year-old daughter's favorite radio station 94.1 FM in Omaha mentioned breastfeeding this past week, I listened.
The DJs (male and female) were discussing a recent research study which reports that the hormone oxytocin reduces headaches. Often called the love hormone, oxytocin is released during love making and labor and delivery.
I waited to see if the DJs would mention the role of oxytocin in breastfeeding. The hormone is responsible for milk let down when a baby feeds and it appears to have a calming and protective influence on babies and mothers. Oxytocin is thought to be the reason why there is a low incidence of child abuse in women who breastfeed. The hormone literally calms mothers down, a wonderful benefit of breastfeeding.
The male DJ did mention breastfeeding - "that painful, inconvenient, unpleasant thing that some mothers do." I kept waiting for him to say, "Just joking!" No such luck. Instead I heard one more way that we sabotage breastfeeding for American mothers. I thought of all the young women, including my daughter, who learned something horrible about breastfeeding in this simple little interchange on the radio. It sucks (no pun intended). Criticizing formula use has no place in our culture. Neither does presenting a negative picture of breastfeeding.
What can we do? Find ways to be positive about breastfeeding. If we hide it under a blanket and ask our children to look the other way, it will remain hidden and unsupported. Take pictures of your children breastfeeding, so they can see how they were fed. When you see a new baby, talk to your children about how babies eat. Visit the breastfeeding baby animals at the zoo. In very small subtle ways, we can all make breastfeeding a normal, natural process for mothers and their babies.

A sincere thank you to all of you who have made a dona tion to MilkWorks in the past couple months. We will enter 2011 in a much stronger position because of you. Donations came from near and far in large and small amounts. You have warmed our hearts. Each and every single donation will keep us here for parents.
Cindy sent a donation with the following note:
"Please continue to send mailings when you need help because I'll always try to help out in whatever way I can. You were a blessing to me with my first baby five years ago and allowed me to continue breastfeeding when everyone told me to just give up. I knew giving up was not best for my baby, and you helped me so much. I hope you continue to get the funds you need to bless other moms and babies the way you blessed me." Breastfeeding News from Our Nation

Healthy People 2020 Goals - They have finally been released!
On December 2, 2010, the new Healthy People 2020 health goals for the nation were released with strong support for breastfeeding. The HP goals aim to see that 81.9% of babies are ever breastfed, 60.5% will be breastfed for 6 months, 34.1 % will be breastfed for 12 months, 44.3% will be breastfed exclusively for 3 months and 23.7% will be breastfed exclusively for 6 months. In addition, 3 new goals were added:
- Increase the proportion of employers that have work site lactation support programs
- Reduce the proportion of breastfed infants who receive formula supplementation in the first 2 days of life
- Increase the proportion of births that occur in facilities that provide recommended care for lactating mothers and their babies.
All of the objectives can be viewed at: http://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topicsobjectives2020/objectiveslist.aspx?topicid=26
And from the White House! President Obama issued a memo this past week to the Office of Personnel Management, asking for guidelines for workplace accommodations for federal employees who are nursing mothers. The order is required by the new health care reform law, which mandates new breastfeeding rights in the private and public sectors. The President has asked the federal government to establish guidelines for all federal employees.

Breast Pump Birthday Special
| |

Many breastfeeding moms find a good quality breast pump to be an essential tool, especially if they are returning to work outside the home. Pumps will never replace breastfeeding and they are not meant to duplicate a baby at the breast. But in the year 2011, they are a necessary tool for some moms.
MilkWorks will be 10 years old in 2011. To celebrate, we are offering the lowest prices possible on the Medela Pump In Style and the Freestyle pumps. Call or stop in and we will share our rock bottom prices, along with all the teaching and support that you need.

Our Milky Way Station
| |
One of the services we have offered since we opened our doors has been a weigh station for parents and their babies. We have found that when parents can come in to MilkWorks and weigh their baby, it helps to assure them that everything is going well. It also helps parents to know when they need to seek help with breastfeeding.
Seven-days-a-week, any parent may come in and weigh their baby on a high-quality digital scale. We will teach you how to use the scale and answer any basic questions that you might have about weight gain. You are welcome to keep a weight record if you want. Because we are a well baby facility, you do not have to worry about sharing the scale or the waiting room with sick children.
