UWTC Countdown to $111,000

At a special press conference held on 2/11/11 at 11:00 a.m., UWTC Community Campaign Co-Chairs announced the community has generously donated 95% of its $2,111,111 goal.
If 1,000 donors give $111 each, UWTC's goal will be met. Gifts of any amount will be greatly appreciated.
The 2010-11 UWTC Community Campaign ends on March 31st.
100% percent of gifts given to UWTC will directly support programs and services because the Corporate Cornerstone Partners' gifts and earned income cover all of UWTC's administrative and operating expenses.

2010 T. Merrell Shipherd Flexible Fund Grant Awards Totaled $66,650 |
This fund was established to honor T. Merrell Shipherd, former Director of United Way of Tompkins County, who, throughout his life, worked to bring people together to find effective solutions to community challenges.
The purpose of this funding is to provide financial support to quality programming and services, to address current, new or emerging needs in the community, to support efforts to improve organizational efficiency and encourage collaborations such as mergers and service delivery joint ventures. This year UWTC's Fund Distribution and Evaluation volunteers received eighteen requests totaling $175,000.
The funded programs help to advance the common good in our community through Education, Income, and Health.

Tompkins County Asset / Disability Coalition
Work through the Tompkins County Asset / Disability Coalition supported over the past two years through the New York Makes Work Pay initiative and UWTC, has focused on asset-building, employment, policy work on legislation and regulations, and serving as a resource to organizations and the community.
All work has been directed to support households of people with disabilities and are expanding efforts to include individuals with low income. A primary function of the coalition is to develop a "Path to Prosperity" model of facilitating connections with community organizations and providing joint services to assist individuals to achieve greater financial security and self-sufficiency.

Community Grants Application Opening
The Community Care Fund, available to UWTC Member Agencies, online application will open on March 1st with the due date of April 29th at Noon.
Community Care Fund Application Information Sessions - March 23, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon will be held at UWTC. Please sign up for one session by emailing Samantha Smith, ssmith@uwtc.org.
The Spring Hunger & Food Security Fund, available to all Tompkins County Nonprofits, online application will open March 1st with the due date of April 29th at Noon (Information Sessions to be announced).
FOCUS (Focus On Community Understanding Service)
This year, Lansing Middle School will host the program. Local nonprofit organizations serving in the community of FOCUS students are eligible to apply from 3/1 - 3/24, 2011.

Free Tax Preparation

The goal of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is to provide free income tax preparation for households with low-to-moderate income in Tompkins County, and increase awareness and utilization of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other financial strategies and asset-building opportunities.

2010 annual income requirements for this free tax preparation service are $30,000 for singles and $49,000 for families.
Lifelong and R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) will provide free tax help February 3rd through April 9th, 2011, to adults age 60+, people with limited incomes, and individuals with disabilities. Home visits are available for taxpayers medically unable to travel, call 273-1511 for an appointment at Lifelong, 533-4939 for Lansing Community Library or 387-5623 for Ulysses Philomathic Library.
