Kick Off 2011 with a Marketing Plan

 

One of your 2011 resolutions should be focused on planning. Research shows that planning increases your success. Marketing should not be a haphazard activity, but rather a well-planned and executed strategy supported by creative and targeted tactics. Too often, marketing is ad hoc with little thought to the big picture or the strategic vision. 

 

The 401k Coach's 5 Levels of Client Creation™ will help you land clients. The five levels of client creation are:

 

1.  Gratitude - Demonstrating your gratitude to your current clients, not only helps you keep those clients, but also assists you in developing new clients when your current clients are raving fans. You can demonstrate your gratitude by giving your clients books, gifts, wine club memberships, cigars and gift certificates. You can periodically send your clients articles of interest and personal notes.

 

2.  Branding - A consistent image and message helps your clients and prospects understand who you are and what you do. All of your marketing activities should have the same look and feel and should convey a constant theme.

 

3. Other People's Relationships (OPR) - By teaming up with other companies, you can leverage their client and prospect lists. For example, you can partner with another company to co-host a webinar, or a seminar, or an event; you could co-write an article or a press release; etc. When you use OPR, you introduce your clients to the partner and you have an opportunity to meet their clients, which gives you instant credibility since they are making the introduction. 

 

4. Other People's Influence (OPI) - Leveraging other people's influence can help grow your business.  Potential partners include clients, service providers, TPAs, CPA firms, ERISA firms, head hunters, management consultants, medical management firms, CFPs, CLUs, etc. By selecting a compatible and credible partner, you can take advantage of your partner's marketing, relationships and influence. 

 

5. Drip/wave marketing is anything that you do to stay in touch with either your existing clientele or the prospects that you are pursuing on a regular basis. Research reflects that it takes eight contacts to convert a prospect to a client, so you have to have a consistent and creative campaign to continually drip on your prospective clients.

 

Marketing techniques that you can use include webinars, e-newsletters, bylined articles (The 401k Help Center posts free articles), social media, advertising, appearances on radio and TV programs, video marketing, trade shows, press releases and event sponsorship.

 

Whichever tactics you decide to use, make sure that you track the results. Every new client should have a field in the database that indicates its source. At least semiannually, you should analyze the source to determine what is working and what is not working in the marketing arena.

 

Marketing tactics are more successful if they are part of a comprehensive marketing plan. By developing a 12-month marketing plan, you ensure that your strategy is well-developed and planned for the entire year.
