NAIA baseballDirect Qualification
Transition & Implementation

NAIA championship events are the most visible reflections of the NAIA's commitment to quality experiences for student-athletes, and afford unique settings in which to involve student-athletes, institutions and host communities in high-level competition and special events driven by the Champions of Character program.

In September 2007, the NAIA Council of Presidents approved recommendations for direct qualification developed over the past year with the leadership of the Direct Qualification Task Force (chaired by Martin Methodist University President Ted Brown).

A transition and implementation committee appointed by the COP to implement direct qualification by September 1, 2008, has met via conference calls since October 9 and will meet at the NAIA national office on Monday, November 19. The committee will review the following: how independent institutions fit into direct qualification, criteria for automatic berths into national championship play, opening round structure, ratings and more.

Continue to visit the direct qualification implementation and transition page on the NAIA membership services website for up-to-date information.

Rob MillerMiller leaves national office to explore new opportunities

The NAIA announced recently Rob Miller will be leaving his post as NAIA
Director of Champions of Character Initiatives in January 2008. Miller's
dedication to the association, membership and the Champions of Character program is extraordinary. Traveling throughout the country, Miller has
presented the core messages of Champion of Character to thousands. He has been instrumental in the development and reputation of the program and has touched the lives of many as a coach and colleague.

"As I look to the future, I plan to stay involved with the NAIA and am excited about getting back into the membership and continuing to work with the membership," said Miller. "As I have those opportunities I hope to keep the mission and the grassroots philosophy of the NAIA close to everything I do."

Upon his departure Miller will be staying close to the NAIA and its
members. Through a soon to be formed consulting company Rob will
continue to advise members and conferences and stay engaged in the
Champions of Character program. In fact, Rob already has accepted the
position as interim commissioner of the Florida Sun Conference and is
discussing various opportunities to assist other NAIA conferences in
planning efforts.

"I would like to thank Rob for years of service to the NAIA. His
professionalism and work with the membership is admirable and will be
missed," said NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr. "I know Rob will be a
lifelong advocate for the NAIA and character driven intercollegiate
athletics. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors and look
forward to continuing my longtime personal and professional relationship
with Rob."

NAIA Strategic PlanCOP Mandates Standards in Four Areas

The NAIA's vision is clear:  character-driven intercollegiate athletics. Our core values - respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship - must be woven into the NAIA fabric, and the association's strategic plan outlines key initiatives to do just that.

The plan focuses on accountability. Our core values must be seen in our actions - on the playing field, in our instructions and examples to student-athletes, and in our attention to the rules.

The Council of Presidents has mandated that basic standards of quality be set in four areas this year:

·          Conduct in competition

·          Coaches education

·          Rules education and accountability

·          Conference governance

Four steering committees (rooted in existing councils and committees) will take the lead in tackling these topics.
