LOSS OF BARN AND HAY We invite you to remember Cornelius and Shirley Vandenboogaard of Smithville, Ontario as they adjust to the fire loss of an historic bank barn and around 200 large square bales of hay during the evening of September 2nd. The shock of such an event always takes an emotional toll. To add to the stress, Cornelius, who also is a trucker, was traveling in Pennsylvania at the time of the fire. Pray for Cornelius and Shirley as they deal with the disruption in their lives, as they work with adjusters and make the many decisions required after such a loss. The Vandenboogaard's are members of the Boyle, Brethren in Christ Church. HURRICANE DAMAGE While there has been much media attention, and rightly so, paid to the catastrophic losses created in Texas and Louisiana by Hurricanes Ike and Gustav, less attention has been focused on the aftermath in other states as the remnant of Hurricane Ike moved up the Mississippi Valley. MAX received many water, wind and food spoilage claims from the states of Oklahoma, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. We have reports that in the West Liberty area of Ohio, people have been without electricity for more than a week. Let's pray for all hurricane victims and the thousands of disaster relief workers and utility crews who are working so faithfully to restore life to some normality. Pray also for the people in the MAX claims offices as they respond and minister to the many people whose lives have been disrupted. FLOODING AND CROP LOSS We invite our readers to remember the farming community of the Inter-Lake area of Manitoba which has suffered major crop losses over the summer due to very wet weather. There are reports of cattle feed shortages due to crop flooding. MAX Canada has many members in the Arborg area of Manitoba. While we do not get involved with crop insurance we do want to remember our farmers who work so hard to provide food for our tables and have so many variables that can impact their ability to do so. Mennonite Disaster Service is exploring ways of assisting the Inter-Lake farming community. CELEBRATE SERVICE We want to celebrate the wonderful ministry provided by Mennonite Disaster Service and Brethren Disaster Ministries as they organizationally respond to the needs of disaster victims across the continent. The number of events this year, from the storms and severe flooding in the Midwest early in the summer to the recent hurricanes, remind us of the enormity of the work. Let's give thanks for the dedicated leadership of these agencies and the hundreds and even thousands of volunteers who give so selflessly, sacrificially and generously of their time to assist when disaster strikes. A visit to their websites and photo galleries is worth some time. We know that many MAX members share of their time with one of these constituent organizations. Pray for both volunteers and leadership as they minister by cleaning up and rebuilding. |
