Life-Threatening Surgery

We request the prayers of the Support Network Ministry for twenty-four year old Selena Halterman who is facing potentially life threatening surgery to remove a tumour from under her brain on November 19th.  Selena has been dealing with cancer issues for ten years.  A recent MRI and a CAT scan have determined that she is a good candidate for this procedure.  The five to six hour surgery will take place at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia.  The potential consequences, even if the surgery is successful, include brain damage and blindness.  Ed Gant, a MAX staff member from Virginia, spoke with Selena on November 9th and reports that she is in good spirits, resting her future in her faith in God and the power of prayer.  She requests our prayers on her behalf for a successful surgery without debilitating consequences, for steady hands for the surgeons and for healing and possible remission.  Selena and her mother Beverly live in Mathias, West Virginia and are members of Mathias Church of the Brethren.

A Hero Among Our MAX Members

James Neufeld, a 37 year old MAX Canada member from Winnipeg, is being called a hero for assisting with a rescue effort to pull an elderly man to safety from his smoke filled home.  James and his co-worker Denise McKendry are Winnipeg paramedics.  Around 2:00 am on November 1st, as they were returning to their station from another call, they saw thick smoke pouring out of a house.  Their quick action of entering the smoke filled house in a very dangerous situation, and pulling the confused and panicked elderly man to safety before the arrival of the fire department probably saved the man's life.  Winnipeg's Superintendent of EMS described Neufeld and McKendry as heroes and indicated the city will recognize their bravery in a formal way.  The story of James and Denise's heroism was recorded, with photo, in the November 2nd issue of the Winnipeg Free Press.  It is believed that a faulty wood-burning stove was the cause of the fire.  Congratulations James.  We celebrate people amongst us who risk their lives for others' safety.  Thanks be to God.  Thank you to Arthur Driedger, another MAX Canada member, for sharing this inspirational story with us.
