Bring your pet to church October 4th
Dogs and cats and turtles and goldfish-any non-human "companions"-will receive God's blessing Sunday, Oct. 4 at Christ Episcopal Church in Marlboro. The blessing is part of the congregation's celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The ceremony is a service of blessing, with songs and prayers for our animal friends.
Fr. Jerry Brooks, Christ Church's vicar, explains that St. Francis recognized all creatures as brothers and sisters in Christ, and that his feast is a particularly appropriate time to give thanks and praise for God's creatures, especially companion animals.
You don't have to be an Episcopalian to attend this service, Fr. Jerry emphasized. Anyone who wants to is invited to a bring furry or feathered or finned friend to to church.
Cats, dogs, birds, frogs, all pets great and small (regardless of denomination) are welcome. Large animals can receive their blessing on the lawn before or after the mass. Smaller ones will be welcomed in the sanctuary during the service.
Refreshments will be served in the parish hall following the service (dog biscuits included).
Christ Church is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, with headquarters at the Church of St. John the Divine in New York City. The Rt. Rev. Mark S. Sisk is diocesan bishop. The Rev. Jerry Brooks is vicar.
The church is located at the northern intersection of Route 9W and Old Post Road in the Hamlet of Marlboro. Facilities are handicap-accessible. Parking is available. For further information, contact The Rev. Jerry Brooks, 845-834-3474, or the church office,
