classroom notes

This week in Kindergarten the class was very busy in Math, Writing, Reading, and Art.  Each student has grown so much in such a small amount of time. On Wednesday during our reading circle it was so nice to hear the whole class read level 5 and 6 Bob books. They have really advanced with their reading and there is no stopping them now!!!!

During art class with Ms Jennifer, the class learned how to draw a maple leaf step by step, ask your child to teach you, it is very creative.  Some other art projects the class created was a shaving cream ghost, a foam Halloween picture, a laced Jack O Lantern, and a direct instruction Halloween picture. The class is getting so excited for Halloween, especially since we have been doing so many Halloween projects!

In Writing, the class practiced all their sight words they have learned and made word necklaces that look like a pumpkin patch.  Also, they learned how to spell and write different numbers, colors, and different times that they read from a clock.  Finally, the class started to learn how to write a sentence properly.

During Reading, the class increased to level 5 and 6 on our BOB book series.  The class listened to The Square  Pumpkin, The Know-Nothing Trick or Treaters, and Incredible Owls.  Again, the kids loved story time because they are so excited for Halloween.

Finally, during Math we went over odd and even numbers, and they started to learned how to count by fives.  The class worked on sorting by colors and shapes, and they continued to work on patterns.  Lastly, the class practiced how to read a clock, by the hour and half hour.  The class continued to work on addition, but I introduced a subtraction problem also.  We are still working on the subtraction concept which they are really trying hard to understand.

See you all next week
Love,
Ms Lindsi

KINDERGARTEN ENRICHMENT FOR THOSE IN AM KG.

Haunted houses hiding Halloween horrors....yes, "Hh" was the letter of the week.  Of course Luke said "Hummer" and Rory let us know that "horse" begins with "Hh."  It is great to hear that so many of you are brainstorming with your child so they can bring in a new word each day.  They love it!

We decorated H's, did directed drawings of houses, and made stuffed bats for our Nocturnal Animals theme.  We continued on our unit of shapes and learned that just about any drawing is possible using only shapes!

Writing consisted primarily of our names, numbers and of course "Hh."  The children also learned to draw a witches' hat with Ms. Lindsi.  In Math we worked on another dot-to-dot and also coloring in the appropriate number of shapes.  Coloring has come a long way!

Because Halloween is near we spoke about all of the creatures of the night.  We learned the reason owls have larger eyes and the way bats navigate with sonar.  The kids thought bats were heavenly!  We also learned that raccoons should never be approached in the day since this means they are sick and can no longer hunt at night.

In Art we made boa bats and laced jack-o-lanterns.  We also colored a Halloween picture and practiced our circles and triangles.  Alot of art will be coming home Friday so you can enjoy the Halloween decor in your home.  The happy children are excited to show off their work.

Spanish has started and this week we worked on "hola," (hi) and "adios," (goodbye).  The kids are to now address Maestra Stacy in espanol when they see her so be sure to practice at home!  We also sang our "Buenas Dias" song.  Music is always a hit!

We are so excited and happy to have our parents participating in our class party Monday.  Please remember to wear your pajamas and not costumes to school. (that way they stay clean)  If your child is staying then bring their costume in a bag for a change later in the day.  Please ask the front desk for details.  The parents will be running the show Monday at 11am with teachers standing by so additional assistance is always welcome and the kids love to see  you in class!

Thanks again to all of the parents that met for conferences.  It was a pleasure!  Also, please don't forget that if your child is going to Kindergarten next year that a conference is mandatory.  Please speak to Ms. Stacy to make an appointment.  A big thank you to Jen (Charlie's mom) for all of the filing and book fair organizing you accomplished for our class and to Venice (Monica's mom) for the continued cutting.  We love you guys!!

Regards, Ms. Stacy and Ms. Lindsi

Hip, Hip, Hooray!  This week's letter is H!  (just thought we'd start this letter off backwards this week!)  We have some happy kids in class whose names begin with H.  Hailey, Henry, and Holly, those kids are you!  We also have a holiday coming up that begins with H.  Yes, Halloween is just around the corner and the kids have been ready for weeks!  We have been singing our Halloween songs (the witches' brew song is a favorite), reading Halloween stories, and doing some Halloween art.  We read Inside a House that is Haunted (double "h"s there) and painted haunted houses.  We made heart covered "H"s and spent a lot of time making h sounds and figuring out words that begin with h.  Jack and Mason were great at this.  A favorite "H" word is hug so we made sure to spend some time giving hugs to friends.  (Ahhhhhhh- so much sweetness)  Ms. Sosanda gave us a book called Huggapotamus.  It was very cute and did a great job illustrating appropriate and kind hugs for friends.
This week's theme is "Night Animals."  The kids really enjoyed a lot of imaginative movement activity this week.  We pretended to be different nocturnal animals such as owl, bats, raccoons and possums.  We had to sleep while the sun was up and then have a lot of active time looking for food and running and flying around when the sun went down and the stars came up.  Colton thought is was very funny to be a skunk and spray the teacher with stinky skunkiness.
We read some great books about nocturnal animals including While the World is Sleeping, Stellaluna and Wow, said the Owl.  We also read Owl Babies, which is a very quiet and sweet book.  One of the owls always said "I miss my mommy" in a little baby owl voice.  The second time we read it Asher was a step ahead of that little owl and used his little owl voice to say "I miss my mommy,"  very cute.  We made some animal skeleton books and then read them together as a group.  The kids were very excited about the interesting animal bones and it was really neat to have us all read the same book together.
In art, we painted our hands black to make bat wings.  We used white crayons to add details to our pictures and Cannon added the cutest little legs and face to his.  We colored bat shapes, and made a lot of pumpkin art.  We practiced our scissors skills on foam stickers in Halloween colors to make foam collages.  Ellie F.'s scissors skills are improving so much.  We also worked in groups to make big paper bag owls.  The kids crumpled up newspaper to stuff a large paper grocery bag and then worked together to paint and feather our owls.  Every time I see them, I giggle.
We are going to end this newsletter with parting words from Adam......"Bye, Batfriends!"

Hello Twos Families!

This week we have been singing about big fat pumpkins and falling
leaves to get ready for Halloween next Monday. It has been such a joy
to hear about all of the different costumes the children plan on
wearing. We have many princesses and Thomas the Tank Engines and even
an angel. Elia, Caroline, Isaac, Brooklyn, Olivia, Sadie, and Everly
have really loved doing our art projects this week, where we created
spiders to learn about the color black and ghosts to learn about the
color white. We also have been creating our own jack-o-lanterns to go
with our investigation of a real pumpkin. We were able to each feel
what a "big fat pumpkin" (which goes along with our song) feels like
and compare it to our smaller pumpkins that we were able to paint last
week. Then we opened the pumpkin up and were able to feel its
"squishy insides" and scoop out lots and lots of seeds! The children
have really been able to use their sense of touch by crunching leaves
in their hands, sorting through maple leaves collected outside, and
collecting pumpkin seeds. Later in the week, Finn and Grant really
expanded their building skills by making super tall towers, and
Brooklyn and Kai started a class dance where everyone boogied down to
music because, well, they felt like it was time to boogie! :-)

We are looking forward to exploring the topic of families in the next
couple of weeks, so if you have not brought in a family photo for us,
we would appreciate it if you did. Thank you so much!

See you next week!

We welcomed our new friend Wyatt to our class this week! Wyatt has done an excellent job!  He really enjoyed our Thursday project of gluing glitter on the letter G.

Tillie and Isabella had a blast making ghosts out of shaving cream on Tuesday and on Wednesday, Lucy colored and painted her giraffe with lots of intensity and it is now displayed on our wall for everyone to enjoy.

One of the things that I am most proud of that I saw this week, is great sharing happening between Gabi and Maren. They both very much love the kitty stuffed animal and they have been great at taking turns playing with it. They even offer it to each other without reminders.

This week Jake takes the award for cracking me up. He has recently become more and more chatty.  He walked up to me this week with lots of excitement and said "Mrs. Katie, How are you?!!" On Thursday Xhristo got to do one of his favorite things, fingerpainting a candy corn.

What a fun week!

Ms. Katie

BOOO!!  Well, hope we didn't scare you!  Maybe our Toddlers' ghosts they created this week weren't that scary, but boy were they fun to make!  Our Tods had a fun filled week of creating creepy and sneaky things.  From ghosts to owls, we painted, drew and colored a load of fun and creative things.  Our coffee filter butterflies came out so pretty, Jane and Anders, job well done on having such colorful ones, and Oscar, you obviously love pink, it is the only color we could spot on your butterfly!

Our letter this week was "G" and can you 'g'uess what spooky Halloween creature we decorated our "G" with?  That's right, GHOSTS!  Luka and Piper could be heard all day Thursday practicing their Halloween "BOOS!"  for the big night!  We are so happy to hear all about their costumes they are planning on wearing, we can tell that each of the children are very excited about Halloween!  Though Monday is pajama day in class, we'd still love if any of our families can share photos of the Tods in their costumes for us to display.  The kids are always so proud to point out their names and faces in class!

Speaking of Halloween, art wasn't the only place to find spooky and silly tales of ghosts and other creatures, we read a boat load of fun stories, like The Runaway Pumpkin, Jack-O-Lantern, The Halloween Play and re-reading a class favorite, Dora's Spooky Halloween.

This Wednesday two of our friends had a beyond wonderful day, Sam and Wyatt.  Wyatt who is new to our class is already jumping in and finding his happy place in our class and Sam, she just loves big room time and keeping busy!  We are so glad everyone in class is so enjoying their time with us, for it does go by so quickly!  Also, we have noticed our little ones have some awesome manners, beyond please and thank you, Blane, you are such a little gentleman during snack and lunch time and Hailey thank you for always getting the stool out for everyone to wash their hands before eating, our little ones are great helpers!  Good-bye and thank you to our Toddler families for another week!
