classroom notes

This week in Kindergarten the class learned how to tell time and read a clock! Very exciting!  The class learned how to read the hour and half on a clock.  We began to talk about what number 12 means on a clock and what number 6 means on a clock.  The class was very interested and are starting to understand the basic concepts to be able to tell time.  Also, they colored a very colorful picture that helped them recognized different numbers and correlating them with certain colors.  Finally, the class continued to count and learned how to idenify different coins.

During Ms. Jennifer's Art Class, the class worked on a neat fall owl picture and some fun Halloween art. They love doing art with Ms. Jennifer and the projects they have completed turned out great. They also made a mosaic pumpkin made out of small pieces of orange craft paper.

In writing the class practiced writing more sight words, "down" and "for."  They practiced writing "down" and "for" in different sentences.  They copied sentences and also made their own sentences.  They also practiced writing words that rhyme with bag and continued to practice writing other sight words and words that rhyme with mop, map and sat.

In reading the class continued reading Bob books and the story of the week, "Pag Wag."  They worked on looking at different pictures and learning how to sound it out and the correct way to spell it.  If they do not spell it correctly, its ok.  All that matters is they are trying to sound it out.

P.E. was fun this week, the class continued to work on soccer skills and practiced many different gross motor movements, running, jumping, running, skipping, and galloping.

Have a great weekend!

Ms Lindsi

Fabulous fire engines, friends and fun were all had in PreK this week!  "Ff" was the letter of the week and to make it extra special a fire engine showed up on Thursday from Portland to reinforce the importance of our Fire Prevention theme of the week.  Lieutenant Jason Anderson with the Portland Fire Department brought an engine from 1979 that is one of the oldest still operating in Portland to share the difference between tools and toys with the kids.  They had a great time and he was an expert at teaching them about being Jr. Firefighters!  A big thank you to Lieutenant Jason and Alex (Aiden's dad) for setting up the visit.  Also to Jennifer, (Charlie's mom) for being our photographer!

We had a blast with our "Stop, Drop and Roll" drill led by Ms. Lindsi.  Anna loved showing everyone "how it's done."  Any excuse to get on the floor and roll around is a good one but it is super important that you review what the children learned this week:  an escape plan from their homes (don't forget, 2nd story windows need a way out!), get low and go under the smoke, find your meeting place outside the home, smoke detectors need to be checked and placed on every floor, and don't be afraid of firefighters, they are there to help!  Please make sure these subjects are reviewed.

We wrote our "Ff"s this week and worked on grouping numbers and identifying the correct number they correlate to in math.  We also continued the idea of sequencing.  Science was water with our new Halloween ducks, and Art, as always, was messy and fun.  We finished our globes and made Dalmation pups.  We also painted the letter "Ff" and Rory's is displayed on our front door.  Beautiful circle wreathes are being created with leaves and we will continue to work on them through next week to further explore shapes.  Please take a look at all of the fun going on and on-display in PreK!!

Music was super silly as we learned our Fire Song to the tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel."  The kids are so quick to learn new songs now and Brodie loves to sing the loudest.  Super cute!

Luke, as always, was quick to let us know that "Ford" begins with "Ff."  Curran came up with "flamingo" and the kids all brainstormed 27 words together.  That is a new record!!

Thanks again to Venus, Monica's mom, who continues to assist us with our cutting preparation.  Volunteers are always welcomed so feel free to email us or send a note to class if you are available.  Also, please don't forget to sign up for conferences.  If your child is headed to Kindergarten next year they are mandatory and we love getting to know you and your child better outside of the classroom.

Reminder:  Pumpkin patch field trip on October 19 to Lee Farms.  Please ask the front desk for details.

Warmly,  Ms. Stacy and Ms. Lindsi

classroom notes

What an exciting week for us in Preschool.  We were busy learning about Fire Safety  through stories such as The Kindertown Fire Brigade, Fire Truck, and No Dragons For Tea.  We played games to help us practice "stopping, dropping and rolling" and we even created a smoke mural so that we could practice crawling under smoke.

Fire safety is such an important  topic and the kids had such great enthusiasm for the books we read and for sharing their own experiences with fire trucks and fire fighters.  Mr. Alex (Aiden's dad) was awesome enough to arrange for a fire fighter to come to school.  Sargent Jason was very informative and very funny.  The kids really enjoyed and really learned the important information that Sargent Jason told them.  He showed the kids all the pieces of his uniform while putting it on (and cracking the kids up).  What a great way for kids to see a fire fighter in uniform and know that it's not a scary thing.  Asher said his favorite part was the siren.  For many of the kids, the Jr. Fire Fighter sticker was the clear highlight.  Natalie was very excited because her Dad's name is Jason also!

We learned some great fire safety songs this week.  "Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck"  is great because it is such an active song.  Learning and moving seem to go hand in hand in the preschool.  We also sang the "call 911" song and then made some 911 art to go with it.

For math, we practiced counting to 20 by letting our fingers walk up a 20 rung tape ladder.  Several of the kids are not quite tall enough to get past 17 or so rungs so they need a little boost from a teacher to get to 20.  We have been enjoying counting to 20 whenever we have a bit of time to spare or when we walk from one place to another.

The letter of the week was F.  F is for Fire and it was a perfect letter for all of the fire safety work we did.  F is also for feathers and we made beautiful, soft feathery F's this week.  Finley's name begins with F and Finley...We think you are FANTASTIC!!!

Happy Happy Birthday to our buddy Ezra this week!

Story time is such a great part of our preschool day.  If any of you are interested in being a guest reader in class please let Mr. Thomas or Ms. Angie know.  We would love to have you share this special time with us.

Fall is all around us in the Two's room. We started the week off by making wreaths out of fall leaves in beautiful shades of yellow, red, orange, and brown. Brooklyn, Finn and Ruby all spent a long time choosing just the right leaves to make their wreaths. Stop by and see these hanging outside our room in the hall.

On Wednesday we took our weekly fieldtrip to visit Ms. Katie's room. This is a great time for the kids to spend time in the classroom with their playground friend's. Together we made orange mosaic pumpkins. Maleah, Sadie and Olivia loved this fun and bright art project. Grant likes to play with the cars and race track in this room. We love our wonderful Wednesdays.

The letter of the week was D. We asked the children words that begin with D. Yush said "dinosaur" and Charlotte said "Dad." The list grew to include dog, door, dancing, and of course Dora, thanks Lucy. We decided to decorate our D with Dinosaurs. With the amount of glue used, I don't think those dinosaurs will be going anywhere soon.

Music, dress up, looking at books, and playing with the doll house all continue to be favorites in our class. Thank-you Isaac for always fixing the kitchen and tables with all your tools. We look forward to another great week with your kids.

WOW! What an exciting week we had! We had a new friend join us this week, Gabi and she fits right in. On Tuesday Maren and Tillie pretend painted each others fingernails, they looked fabulous and Wednesday we were joined by the other 2's class and made mosaic pumpkins with construction paper and lots and lots of glue!

Lucy was a very big girl this week and showed off her dinosaur to all of her friends. Jake survived being the only boy on Thursday.  He definitely missed his friend Xhristo.

We also had a visit from our firefighter friend, Mr. Jason on Thursday. He showed the class his fire truck and all of his gear. At first Isabella was a little uncertain of the fireman when he had his breathing mask on, but by the end she was bumping knuckles with him.

Next week we will finish up with the letter "E" and be moving on to "F".  Heads up parents, we will be painting with our feet!

This week our toddlers learned about Autumn that is all around us.

Our first art project we painted apples with red, green and yellow paint.  Peyton, Hailey, Sloane, Piper and Blane enjoyed painting their hands and faces. That's the most fun of all.

The letter of the week was "E" and Georgia, Hailey, Luka, Ocie, Oscar, Peyton and Zoie had great fun gluing eyeballs on the letter E.  After the "E" they created their own masterpiece and fingerpainted.  Calvin enjoyed painting with his hands.

For another project they made stained glass apples out of wax paper and colored tissue paper of yellow, orange and green.  Zoie, Hailey, Oscar and Luke had fun gluing colored tissue paper on the apples.

One of our funnest art pieces to do was the individual autumn collages with real leaves, pine cones and maple seed pods.  We had them use glue sticks.  Anders, Hailey and Zoie had a fun time with the sticks and they thought they were mighty tasty.  After the project was done we crushed up the leaves and had fun throwing them in the air like the wind does.

For our music time we sang, "Leaves on the Tree" to the tune of "Wheels on the Bus", "Falling Apples" to the tuneof "London Bridge is falling down" and the song called "Applesauce" sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle."

Our stories this week were about bears and dogs:  Charlie and Small Bear and Sam the dog.

Courtney and myself have the most fun of all being with your precious children that make us laugh and we enjoy watching them grow.

We Love Them All!
