classroom notes

This week in Kindergarten, the class did so many great things, but art was the most exciting. The pictures of each family member the students created, were priceless.  A lot of thought went into each family member.  Another art project the class did was to create their name while using many different art supplies for each letter and finally they used watercolor paints to finish the background.  They turned out awesome, Leah, Olive and Kira really worked hard on them.

In math the class started learning/reviewing about the value of a penny, nickel and dime.  Also, the class reviewed/ continued working on addition problems.

In writing the class learned how to spell the word, red and practiced writing many different colors like, black, pink, yellow, etc.  We also went over our spelling words. Parents, please review the spelling words that are in your child's folder. We will be having a spelling test next Friday!!!

In reading we began talking about what an author and illustrator are.  Ms. Katie and I taught the students when reading a story to try and think about the beginning, middle and end of the story.  We also continued reviewing all of our rhyming words and learning how to spell them. Finally to finish reading, they each practiced reading Pig Wig out load to the class.  Each student is really doing so well and growing so much.  To end our exciting week Ms. Katie took Olive and Kira to the Lake Oswego library, the girls loved it and thought it was a really fun field trip!

With love,
Lindsi

classroom notes

The Five Senses were the theme of the week and we had so much fun exploring each one.  Science consisted of smelling and tasting.  We used a blindfold so the kids could smell but not see certain items then had to guess what they thought they were.  We also practiced our taste by having them try different foods.  Everyone loved the sugar cube and knew it was "sweet."

Art was super labor intensive this week as we worked on our texture name boards for "touch."  They will be coming home later and the children really treasure them.  Please make sure you take the time, (if you weren't able to at Open House) to come in and allow your child to show theirs to you, they are so proud!  Rory can actually find every name on the wall by herself!!  Go Rory!!!!!  We also labeled a tongue for tastes.

Writing is really coming along quickly!  The letter of the week is "Dd" and Olivia's favorite "Dd" word was doughnuts!  "Dodge, daddy, dirty, dog, dodgeball and daring made the list."  We have several students that can now write their own name and we encourage you to practice with them at home.  Remember, it is uppercase, then lowercase for the rest.  This is the way Kindergarten is taught so we like to reinforce this process early.  (ie:  Stacy, Lindsi)

In Math we counted everything this week!!!!  We counted to 30 during calendar time.  We count the number of children in line daily, objects we play with, how many of each body part we have and even how many family members we all live with in our homes.  So far Curran is the leader with two siblings.  Rylee even made rows of 3's with her Cheez-Its at snack time and figured out that 4 rows of 3 crackers each was 12!  Brainiacs!!!!

Calendar is how we begin our day and it is nice to hear that your kids are sharing music with you at home.  There are new songs every week so please make sure to inquire as to what's new.  "Days of the Week" is sung to the tune of the Addams Family theme song beginning with Sunday so have fun with it and join in!  We hope you enjoyed last weeks' seatbelt song.  We also review the date everyday so ask about it and we know they will definitely answer!  Henry loves reciting the year everyday.  He always tries to be the first one to shout out the year and is undefeated!!

We read the books, "Detective Dog and the Disappearing Doughnuts,"  "Eyes, Ears, Mouth and Nose," "Our Senses,"  and "Taxi Dog."   Storytime is funny and silly and Brodie always asks for Ms. Stacy to make silly voices for the characters.  A complete blast!!  One way to assist your child in identifying beginning sounds is to read a book and have them raise their hand everytime you say a word that begins with our letter of the week.  Their arms get tired but the pride on their face by the end is priceless.

Open House was a delight as we met several parents and their children took them on a scavenger hunt.  If you were unable to attend, please feel free to ask us for the scavenger hunt sheet and complete it with your child.  They had so much fun learning how to listen and find the locations that were on the sheet.  We have been working on name recognition and we are happy to report that they can all find their chairs!  We have now begun to challenge them by periodically changing them around.

We had a practice fire drill on Thursday and we are excited and proud to report we were the first class out of the building!!  (we teachers aren't competitive at all....)  Your children were calm, collected, and listened as they we led them out of the  building in record time.  Use this lesson to talk about your own fire escape route at home and where you would meet in case of an emergency.  Anna was especially interested in what does and does not burn and if it had been real if it would have been different.  We assured her that it is our job as teachers to keep all of them safe and that was the result of much happiness and smiles.

Thanks again to Monica's mom, Venus for the cutting,  Alex, Aiden's dad for volunteering in class and Shannon, Brodie's mom, for the glue sticks!!  You are appreciated!!!!!

classroom notes

Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!  I smell... and hear and taste, touch and see so many things around me!  We have had a really fun time exploring during our "Five Senses" week.  We learned about what our senses are and what parts are our bodies we use to experience them.  Sometimes we would talk about our senses and we might "accidentally" say the wrong part of the body with a particular sense like maybe "So I used my EAR to SEE what was going on... and the kids were quick to correct us with shouts of "No... eyes!"  Aren't they all so smart!
One of our favorite senses games this week was to just simply be quiet and listen to the school.  (You may not be able to imagine 19 three year olds being quiet at the same time but let me tell you it is a wonderful and miraculous thing)  We could hear  kids playing and teachers voices on the playground.  It was so cool when we would recognize one of the voices out there.  And if we were really quiet, we could hear the hum of the bounce house.  We also enjoyed playing I spy.  We used our sense of touch to play in warm water, with dirt, and with birdseed.  It was neat how different each felt.  We also felt the walls, the carpet, and our hair.  We used our sense of smell to smell all kinds of things.  It's funny to see kids sniffing the classroom and their was a lot of giggling going on. The best things for a kids to smell at school may be their feet (Finley says yuck) and their friends.  When Reeve was asked what his dog smelled like he replied "like broccoli."   We made sure to pay attention to our sense of taste at snacks this week.  Carrots had only a few big fans and a lot of "No, thank you's."  Popcorn and yogurt are big favorites in our class.
Spending time talking about our senses has also been a great opportunity to expand our vocabularies.  When asked how something feels or tastes a common answer is "good" or "bad."  Asking them why and they are likely to extend the conversation.  Describing how something feels/sounds/ etc. to you will help your child add words that he or she may not have yet.
Our letter of the week was D.  None of our friends has a name beginning with D this week but someone in our families does!  Daddy begins with D and has two lower case ds!  We learned the daddy song.  We also each had the opportunity to show everyone how our dads walk.  Watching the kids walk like their dads is hysterical.   I'm not even sure it would be proper to tell you about it.  It may be a breech of privacy but we all got a lot of laughs about it.  By the way, the kids are quite proud of their dads there is a whole lot of love happening and many of the dads are bigger than the other dads according to the kids.  (Don't worry.  All you daddies are not going to have to work this out yourselves.  We decided that all of our daddies are bigger.)  We also spent a lot of time stomping and roaring like dinosaurs (watch our for Ellie P.  She has quite a roar on her) and playing with our dinosaur environment.  We also made dotty D's.  They are beautiful.
We have done both fire and earthquake drills this week.  The kids did an amazing job and we will keep practicing these important skills.  The kids really enjoyed doing an earthquake drill because we got to go under the tables and that usually is not a safe choice for school time.
A big thank you to  Aiden from the Pre-K's class Dad, Mr. Alex for bringing an ambulance to school, talking to us about what paramedics do and letting us go inside of the ambulance.  That was so awesome!
Thanks a bunch to Riley and her family for the extra sock donation.  They are super helpful and Riley was very excited to wear them at "big room" time!
If you have not brought in an 8 by 10 family photo yet, it is not too late.  We are going to make a really cool art project and would love for everyone to be able to participate.  Also conferences are happening during the month of October so don't forget to sign up so we can tell you how awesome your kid is!  If none of the sign up times work for you, please feel free to contact Ms. Angie or Mr. Thomas and we will work something out.
*********** funny kid conversations ***********
Henry "They have gum balls at Pizza Schmizza.  When I get really big, I can have one."
Teacher " How old is really big?"
Henry "Probably 40."
-something to look forward (or backward) to....right?

Thank you to all of the families that were able to make it to our Open House.  The kids get so excited to share their room, friends and teachers with you.

classroom notes

Hello Twos families!

This week the children had fun celebrating the arrival of Autumn by
playing "Farmer's Market" with real farm-fresh zucchinis, squashes,
plums, pears, carrots, and apples. Yush and Isaac liked to collect
the vegetables in baskets, while Ruby tied on her apron and helped run
the market.
Olivia and Everly talked about how they've started
noticing leaves falling from the trees, and everyone is excited about
finding their first leaf pile to jump into.

Babies are still a favorite in our class, which works perfectly with our study of the
letter "B," and our class has continually been transformed into a
nursery as the children have put their "babies" to sleep, fed them,
clothed them, changed them, given them bottles, and fed them food in
our little toy high chair. Brooklyn created a picnic for her baby
earlier in the week, and Dr. Sadie made sure that each baby was
healthy by checking them with her stethoscope. Elia rocked his baby
to sleep in our cozy corner, while Lucy and Brix have used the cozy
corner themselves as a place to rest and relax.

Ethan told stories with our Victorian house and its toy family, and Kai explored the many uses of apples by making apple prints with red paint. By now, most of the children have created their own "miniature" version of themselves that we will be using throughout the year and some are just beginning to make a house for their person with pictures of furniture and rooms chosen by them. Come by and see their creations when you can!

See you next week!

This week we worked on the letter C.

We used toy "c"ars as paint brushes by rolling them through paint and then rolling them on paper this week. Xhristo really enjoyed driving his car through the paint and on the letter C.

On Wednesday, we were joined by the other 2's class, and we broke open rocks to find crystals inside. All of the children were interested to see what was inside the rocks.

Maren had fun loving on the babies in the class room, and they all are having a lot of fun in dramatic play, playing with dress up outfits and food. Tillie had a great time showing all of our friends in the Toddler Class how she could make a lot of animal sounds.

Lucy and her sister Anna did a great job decorating their frame at our Open House this week, Maren showed her mom around the classroom and Jake brought his aunt Bella in to show off his classroom.

We had fire and earthquake drills this week, and Isabella did a great job holding her friend's hands and leading them outside to our safe spot.

classroom notes

It was a terrific week in the Toddler Classroom.  We found ourselves "c"uddling with the letter "C," bringing the sunshine in by painting with the vibrant color yellow, exploring with crayons & stickers - always a class favorite, and as always lots of singing and dancing.

Sam really enjoyed painting with the color yellow while Jane and Anders built the highest tower they could before it all came tumbling down.  Oscar and Luka were entranced with sticky stickers and super fun crayons.

It is so fun to watch how each child reacts to each activity.  Each and every child has such a special and unique way in exploring their environment and we look forward to being a part of their development and the never-ending fun!

Love: Ms. Courtney & Ms. Judy
