classroom notes

This week in Kindergarten the class worked on counting money, learning the value of each coin, adding different coins together, reviewing which President is on each coin, and reviewed writing their numbers and different math problems.

In writing, the class wrote their own book. They were the author and illustrator. Together the class reviewed all the different rhyming and sight words and then they combined all of them together to create this book. They all worked so hard on this book. Please have your child read this book to you. I helped a little, but the class did most of the work. We also worked on another group of five sight words and another group of rhyming words, while making a really pretty flower.

The class continued working with our art teacher Ms. Jennifer on their family portrait and then also made a picnic basket with healthy food inside. While doing this the class worked on their cutting skills.
In reading, the class practiced reading their book they made and also read some BOB books. The class is reading so well, I am excited to continue on our path.

In social studies we talked about our different body parts and how to keep our bodies safe and healthy.

Finally, in PE we continued playing soccer and learned how to do relays.

Our class had another great week.  I am looking forward to next week.

With love,
Lindsi

classroom notes

C is for car, cake, Curran, Charlie, cup, cat and Chuck's Place as Mac so proudly stated.  It is also for confident, cute and cuddly children!!

Health and Safety was the theme and we learned about what makes a healthy body and talked about eating a balanced diet and exercising.  We used this theme to talk about germs and how they are spread.  In Science the kids sprayed green dye onto white paper with a squirt bottle to show how germs fly through the air when we sneeze if we don't cover our mouth.  Super fun!

Music was great for getting our wiggles out as we learned some new songs.  We learned "Wear Your Seatbelt,"  "Everybody Let's Go," and a catchy welcome song to learn names.  All songs we teach have movements to them so please be sure to ask your child to sing them and act them out for you.  Parker and Monica seem to be our future Broadway stars as they sing the loudest and are definitely not shy.  Awesome to see and hear!  You may also want to talk about "Stranger Danger" with your child as this was part of our safety theme.  We gave them scenarios and asked what they would do and you will be happy to know they all answered correctly!  We also discussed what is, and is not safe in the car, so don't be surprised if they tell you not to use your cell phone while driving...sorry.  :)

"C" is for collage and that is just what we created in Art.  We also made self-portraits with tissues and hands showing how our face should look when sneezing.  A healthy picnic basket collage was created while discussing what helps us create a strong body for recess and a gorgeous handprint rainbow poster for our classroom to participate in as a group.

We write and practice math daily so please feel free to work on both at home.  Check out their journals that come home on Fridays and have them explain what we did that day.  This week Math sequencing was their favorite.  It is in their folders so please review "first, second, third, and fourth" with them, they love it!  Charlie wanted to keep going long after it was over and explained on the way to handwashing that he was "sixth" in line.  Aidan worked so hard and perservered to master his number  "4."  It paid off and he completed an amazing four, great job!!  Rylee worked so hard on her name and it looks terrific!  She was beaming after receiving a compliment from her friend, Luke.

Mac shared with us that "Chuck's Place" begins with "C".  He was so proud for his new friends to know that is his daddy.  Monica was our Star Student and really took to being the teacher.  She would even lead her friends over to the calendar and ask "ok, so if today is Wednesday, what is tomorrow?"  If they didn't know she was happy to help, all in a teacher voice.  We got a kick listening and watching them imitate us.  A good reminder that children are always observing....

We love and appreciate our volunteers!!  A big thank you to Venus, Monica's mom, for all of the cutting, we appreciate you!!  Thanks to Alex, Aiden's dad, for not only volunteering in our class for the day, but bringing the ambulance to school Friday and teaching us about taking care of not only ourselves, but others.  You rock!!  Thank you to Lauren for turning the big "4" and bringing us Krispy Kreme donuts!!

Any time you want to volunteer or want to help or prep projects for our class we would love to have you, plus, your kids completely light up when you are there and are  so proud to introduce you to their friends!

classroom notes

What a busy week full of good clean fun.  You see, it's been "Health and Safety" week and so we spent a good deal of time practicing our "germ busting" hand washing technique.  The kids have enjoyed using soapy bubbles while singing the abc's and then turning off the water with their paper towels.  The best part is throwing the germs away and getting double thumbs up from teachers for being a germ buster.  Yahoo!  Mason makes sure we see him get rid of those germs.  He's an old pro at germ busting and is quick (yet kind) when it comes to making sure others do it correctly.

We have also learned what strangers are this week.  We read Never Talk to Strangers.  The story has many examples of when you may meet a stranger and the refrain is always "never talk to strangers!"  The kids were great at shouting that important rule as the story was read.     Eating healthy foods is another way to keep our bodies healthy.  We did a healthy vegetable sorting game.  Natalie was excited to play the game.  Her enthusiasm was great, as she stated "Well, I really know what that is, that is a potato!"  If you have met Natalie you would know that she is pretty enthusiastic about a lot of things.

We learned quite a bit about our bodies this week.  We read some very informative books.  We read My Brain, My Skin, My Muscles, and My Heart.  When we read about our muscles, we flexed our muscles.  We learned that we use muscles for all of our movement and that we have muscles everywhere.  So, we flexed so many of our muscles.  So cute to see so many little guys showing of their muscles.  Everyone was so proud.  Learning about our hearts was really interesting to everyone.  We read the story and then ran in place and did jumping jacks to get our heart beating faster and pumping blood more quickly.  Then we felt our own hearts.  After that we used our homemade stethoscopes (paper towel tubes) to listen to our friends' hearts.

The letter of the week was C.  We have several "c" friends this week.  Cannen, Charles, Claire and Colton all begin with C.  C is also for cat and Hailey came in with a cute cat face instead of her face one day this week. We love your excitement for our language lessons, Hailey!  We counted cupcakes and cotton balls this week in math (Laimis) is a very good counter).  We also did a lot of cooking in the dramatic play area.  Mia really got into it.  She had the cookbook, big bowls and spoons, and the oven mitt and was cooking up a whole lot of deliciousness!  We also decorated our big class C withThanks to all of you grandparents who made it in for Grandparents day!  It was so cool to have you in class!

***  So many cute things happen every week in class and this is just one of them  ***candles.

Happy birthday to Mia this week!  Such a big girl!  We are so glad you are in our class this year, Mia!  Thanks for bringing delicious cupcakes to school and letting us all sing to you!  (It was so awesome to see Mia slowly and very messily enjoy a chocolate cupcake while wearing a beautiful while dress-  love you Mia!)

Teacher  "Jack, Do you want to sign your name on your paper so that we will know that it is yours?"

Jack         "Well, I can only make a J and an M."W

Teacher  "That's great!  Those are your initials and we will know that it's your paper!"

Jack (kind of frustrated)  "But look! (he walks over to the pencil on the wall with his name on it)  There are all of these other letters!"

You have got to love Jack's desire to do things the "right" way!

Please bring in an 8 by 10 family photo for a very cool art project.  A photocopy or computer printout is fine as they may get messy.  Thanks to all of you have already brought one in.  We will be starting our project next week!  Thanks!

Hello Twos Families!

This week we have been settling more into our classroom routine with play dough fun, felt board songs, mailing "letters" in our classroom mailbox, and investigating our "carrot patch" in our sensory area.  We are discussing positive ways to use our hands, feet, and mouths, and have been coming up with excellent ideas like clapping, dancing, and singing.  Our children seem to LOVE using their hands for saying hello, giving hugs, and lots of painting! (Ms. Rebecca and I have decided that we have quite a class of visual artists!)  This week we talked about the letter A and used "apples" as our giant letter's decoration using red paint, our color of the day.  We are continuing to read books about going to preschool, families, and stories of comfort as we are still in the beginning stages of our life together at school to make the transition of our newest children easier.  To help in this, we would like to remind all of our families to please bring in a family picture that we can hang up for the school year if you have not done so already.  Thank you!

Ruby, Elia, Olivia, and Sadie continue to care for our young babies in our housekeeping area and have been making our cozy corner into a virtual nursery.  Yush and Isaac are our resident handymen and helpers, always fixing something in the kitchen area, sweeping, and gathering toys to be put away. Brooklyn has enjoyed putting together our soft puzzles, while Kai has enjoyed investigating the orange and purple fuzzy hats in our dress-up area.

Unfortunately, our plums were too "mushy" to use for a plum cake last Friday, so we are attempting to bake carrot muffins with the carrots from our patch instead.  Hopefully it will work out for us this time.  The children have loved harvesting the carrots, washing them, and tasting them.   We have quite a class of gardeners and nature explorers.  :-)

The children are learning and exploring each in their own way and are discovering many "wonders"  every day with us.  It's so exciting to watch!

See you all next week!

This week all of the children showed their creativity. Maren and Tillie played hairstylists with each other, and Jake screamed with delight during painting, we may have a budding artist on our hands. Xhristo enjoyed singing and dancing, while Lucy could not get enough of our feelings book. Isabella enjoyed sculpting with our new play dough that smells super yummy.

We also had a very special treat this week. Our friends from Ms. Rebecca's, Ms. Nicole's and Ms. Tracey's class came over on Wednesday so we could all play with the parachute together. Everyone had a fabulous time. We are hoping to have them visit more often. We also worked on our motor skills this week by jumping on bubble wrap to hear it pop.

Thank you to all of you who brought back your family book. It has been a lot of fun to look at them.

Just a reminder, next week is Open House on Thursday the 29th. I look forward to seeing all of you then.

Ms. Katie

classroom notes

Is it just us or is this month already flying by with our new teachers and class-mates?  What a great start of the school year we have been having!!

This week included some great art, great games and most of all great company.  This week in our TERRIFIC TODDLER class we had another addition to our fabulous family, Miss Georgia, who comes and plays and learn with us on Thursday's.  She had a great first day in our class, full of smiles, singing and of course now very popular animal flash cards, which Jane and Zoie will tell you are the best!

Our week was filled with fun things to do with the letter "B" and also talking about what we do with our hands.  We kicked off art by painting our class 'B' blue of course and then gluing cotton "b"alls on it.  Oscar and Peyton love the sticky fun of gluing, and were having fun getting little pieces of cotton stuck on their fingers!  Another fun project was our "b"and-aid collage.  Luka's cousin, Kweli came in class that day and had loads of fun putting Nemo and penguin band-aids on his paper, where Hailey and the girls preferred the My Little Pony ones. Another fun, messy and popular project was our mixing blue paint mural. We took blue paint and mixed it with yellow to get...GREEN!  Our friend Anders looked like the Incredible Hulk after he was done, but boy was he all giggles. We wrapped up our art with doing cut out collages of what we use our hands for.  We found magazine cuts of people driving, eating, petting their pets, hugging and lots more and made "B"ig murals!

Also going on with "B" this week we read:  The Blue Book, Elmo Plays Ball, Wheels on the Bus, Baby Beluga and for hands we read the important book of Hand Are Not For Hitting.  Our class is very good about gentle touches and giving hugs and high fives.

Before we say good bye for the week Ms. Courtney and Ms. Judy want to say thank you to Lauren F. for sharing her birthday with our class and along with everyone else.  Lauren was one of our first students and we love her to pieces! Congratulations on turning four Lauren, we are so happy to know you!

Love: Ms. Courtney & Ms. Judy
