Spanish

Spanish continues to grow daily. I now speak to the children throughout the day interchanging Spanish and English and you would be amazed how much they understand!! They don't even blink an eye when I ask them to get something for me or put something in the trash in Spanish. It was fun to see Ashleigh's mom's reaction to me asking her to put something in the trash (basura) and Ashleigh running right over to do it!

Prehistoric Times
ROAR!!!! That is the sound heard from the preschool class this week as we have been learning about "prehistoric times." We love learning about, playing with and acting like so many of the dinosaurs and other creatures that roamed the earth before there were people. We have learned so much from our story times this week. One of the coolest and most interesting books we read was Life-Size Dinosaurs by David Bergen. It has many illustrations of dinosaur body parts. We learned and actually got to see how big a Pachycephalosaurus' bony head was, how long the claws of a Therizinosaurus are (yikes) and how small a Pterodactylus was. There is a picture in the book of a Tyrannosaurus' mouth. It is huge! We looked at it's big mouth and big teeth and then measured each of the children to see if they were bigger or smaller than the mouth. About half of the class is smaller than T-rex's mouth. Then we talked about how there are not any of them alive today, only bones, so we don't need to worry. There was also an illustration of a life sized T-rex poop. That, of course, was so funny to everybody. Speaking of T-rex, the kids are all experts at walking like one. After getting from one place to another as a T-rex, Willie announced, "I eat meat." We practiced moving like several different kinds of prehistoric creature such as flying Pteranodons, swimming Ichthyosauri, and slowly lumbering Apatasaurus. The kids really get into character and flash their scary teeth and show their sharp claws. Olivia and Ellie usually prefer to be puppies but at least none of the meat eaters decided to eat them. In art, we made super cute stegosauruses. We used a basic dinosaur shape and the kids added triangles to the backs and painted them. They are all so great and different. Rory's has polka dotted plates and Charles came back to paint his three times. We made dinosaur dioramas. The kids enjoyed talking about dinosaurs habitats and making their dinosuars a nice enviornment to live in. Palmer made a pillow out of a stick and had his dinosaur lay down in his bed. We painted dinosaur eggs and then we worked cooperatively to make a huge dinosaur nest to put the eggs in. We were so impressed that Mason and Kaden waited so patiently for five minutes to do the nest activity. In science, we became paleontologists as we dug for dinosaur bones and cleaned them up. We learned so much about dinosaurs. We also erupted our volcano. This always brings about ooohs, ahhhs and OH COOLs from the kids. Our letter of the week is j. J is Jackson's letter! Jumping jacks also begin with j and one of the funniest things to see is a bunch of preschoolers doing jumping jacks. We also played jumping j. We drew cards and when a j came up we all got up and jumped, jumped, jumped! (We also giggled giggled giggled) So much fun and such good exercise. A big thank you to all of you who made it to the open house this week. It was nice to get a chance to chat and show off your kids a little bit!

Prehistoric Times
|
Hello Twos families, ROAR! This week we have gone back in time to the age of the dinosaurs and been having a "roaring" time! All of the children seem to love these fascinating creatures and relish learning everything they can about them. It's interesting to see how they all know that dinosaurs are from "a long time ago" and are no longer around (although a few mentioned seeing them at the Oregon Zoo, but we discussed how those dinosaurs were "robots" and not real, too.) Noah, Ava, Hailey, Adam, Austin, and Sophie all enjoyed making our classroom dinosaur the "Shoe-a-saurus," using their own feet as the outline of the dinosaurs head. Spencer, William, Audrey, Maddie, and Ellie all loved digging for dinosaurs in rice and being real paleontologists. Many of the children also were able to dig dinosaurs out of play-dough, make dinosaur "pins," and fill in a dinosaur picture with "bones" made out macaroni. Throughout the week, we stomped about to dinosaur songs and were able to pretend to be our favorite dinos (Ms. Nicole loves the apatosaurus!) A favorite book this week has been ALL ABOARD THE DINOSAUR TRAIN, which is fun and silly since it mixes learning about dinosaurs and trains. Please check out our "Shoe-a-saurus" dinosaurs peeking out from the grass outside our classroom when you can! See you next week.

Prehistoric Times

Some are big, some are mean, some eat meat and some eat leaves, but there aren't anymore of those old dinosaurs, unless you were in our class this past week..Our Tods did a lot of Prehistoric fun with dinosaur discovering from art, to music and books, the kids love the prehistoric creatures from the past! We started our week by sponge painting stegosauruses, then made our own terrifying dino track (by tracing the student's shoes and adding green and goldish glitter to give it a scaly look)...The kids loved it. Another fun project this week was our fossil configuration. We made (out of pasta and coffee rounds) ancient skeletons of various dinosaurs. The little ones had a blast creating their unique dino fossils. We wrapped up our art with A LOT of DINOmite coloring and stickering (a class favorite for Brookie). The class read such great books this week as well, like: "How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten," "DINOSAURS," "My Giganticsaurus ABC's," "Ten Little Dinosaurs" and "Danny and the Dinosaur." But the biggest thing in class for everyone was probably the newest addition to our toddler family, Hailey! WELCOME HAILEY! She had a great first week! Hailey is Ava in the Two's Class little sister and cousin to our fellow friend in class, Brooklyn. Everyone was quite pleased having her and she has been such a wonderful addition to our class. Also, we wanted to say hello to Carson's (in Two's) brother, Anders who swung by Friday to visit us for the day. Such a wonderful boy and pleasant to be around. Isaac and Zoie loved playing with him! Our class would also like to say a very much needed WELCOME BACK to Ms. Lindsi in Pre-K. We are glad to have you back at school!
