Spanish
with
Maestra Stacy

Spanish continues to grow daily.  I now speak to the children throughout the day interchanging Spanish and English and you would be amazed how much they understand!!  They don't even blink an eye when I ask them to get something for me or put something in the trash in Spanish.  It was fun to see Ashleigh's mom's reaction to me asking her to put something in the trash (basura) and Ashleigh running right over to do it!

Wild Animals

 Leah and Olive

Wild animals are alive in Pre K this week!  We are studying and discussing different ones and the lion seems to be the most popular.  We talked about what role the male and females play within their animal families, whether they are herbivores or carnivores and what types of habitats they live in.  Soleil asked many questions and was impressed that the lioness is the one who hunts.

The letters of the week were Yy and Zz.  We quickly realized that brainstorming these two letters is quite a challenge.  See how many you can come up with at home, it is not as easy as you might think!  We now write entire words daily and are so proud of Charlie who has mastered his name.  Many of the children are now writing their last names and are always so proud of the results.

The sensory table was filled with macaroni and wild animals with chopsticks.  The kids enjoyed role playing with the animals and building "habitats" with friends.  We played Letter Bingo and matched upper case letters with lower for letter recognition, and Lego creations are out of this world!  We are starting to move past the 'Star Wars' ships and on to construction equipment and animal habitats.  A new magnetic set is the hit this week and everyday the kids ask to use it during Stations.

Art was messy and after all, if you can't get messy in Preschool, when can you??  We assembled wild foam animals and then put them into an illustration.  We are focusing on details right now, not just the minimum asked in a project.  Cash was so excited to hear from all of the children how much they loved his monkey drawing.  Our zebra collages are adorable and can be seen hanging in the middle of the room.  Zoi really wanted hers to be perfect so she copied the example perfectly!!  During Art we use "teachable moments" to discuss what we are working on and why it is important.  Pearl was amazed to hear that no two zebras have the same stripes pattern.  This moment was important to explain that just as the zebra is unique, so are we as people and friends.   We are all important in our own way and that our differences actually make us beautiful.

Science was a blast, literally, as we used different items to melt ice cubes.  The hairdryer was the favorite, especially for the girls as it was hot pink.  We talked about how heat and cold not only change the weather but how we feel as well.  (we need sun, already!)  Leah loved "painting" with the colored ice cubes.

We are practicing kindness and respect daily and the most effective way we have found is in role playing.  I give the kids a scenario and have them tell me what they would do in the situation to resolve it peacefully, and without hurting anyone's feelings.  They like to play this "game" and it has been helpful in resolving issues that occur throughout the day.

Kristin was our Star Student and took a lot of pride in the fact that she could set up the calendar by herself without any help and would always finish before we could end our "Days of the Week" song.  Jack did a great job at counting the days in the week and helping me with the wipe-off board.

Wild AnimalsLauren's Creation

Lions and tigers and bears!  Oh My!  That what our classroom has been full of all week.  Also Giraffes, Sloths and Kangaroos.  We have really enjoyed our "Wild Animals" theme.
In art, we made lion and cheetah stick puppets.  The kid's can make them roar so loud!  The kids were each given the same nondescript animal shape to paint into what ever animal they decided for it to be.  Most kids knew right away what they were making.  Kaden turned his into a big lion.  Mason made an iguana and Lauren, a crab.  It's neat how different the kids can see the same thing!
In math, we learned about over and under.  We practiced going over and under chairs.  It's very tricky.  We also learned about inches and measuring.  We also put giraffes in order from smallest to biggest.
We read Slowly, Slowly, Slowly Said the Sloth by Eric Carle.  It was a slow and quiet story and the kids were a bit fascinated by the sloth.  We practiced moving slowly, slowly.  (This is no small feat for a preschooler-unless of course you are in a hurry to get somewhere, right?)  We also read Sweet Dreams (How animals sleep).  The kids ooohed and ahhhhed at how cute the sleeping animals were.  The kids thought the mama and baby sloth were extra cute and Willie couldn't believe that sharks sleep with their eyes open.  The kids then got to show the way they sleep.  Everyone was so sweet all snuggled in on the carpet together.  For a little more action, we read From Head to Toe about kids doing actions that animals do.  Naturally, we had to see if we could do them too and we could.  It was so great how Kaden always copied not only the animal movements but the faces he did were very close the the real thing.  His gorilla face was so great and Olivia doing a bison was pretty funny too.
We sang lots of old favorite songs this week.  We sang the elephant song, alligator pie and all of the songs about monkeys we could think of.  The kids make great monkeys.
In Science, we learned the difference between wild animals and other animals.  We played wild or not.  Someone would say an animal name and we would show thumbs up if it was wild and thumbs down if it is not.  The kids did a great job if the animal was a pet or farm animal but it was pretty tricky if the animal was one that we would see at the zoo or if the animal was pretty cute.  But everyone knows that an alligator is wild!
Our letter of the week is i.  We learned about inches and made one inch cube collages.  We learned about inchworms and made little ones out of beads and pipe cleaners.  We talked about ice and wild animals that live where it is icy.  Then we polar bear walked and painted with colorful ice cubes.  The paintings turned out very pretty.
Thank you Brodie for the train table.  The kids are loving it!  You are great at sharing!
It's not too late to bring in a family photo for our family flower project.  The finished ones look amazing.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask Mr. Thomas or Ms. Angie.

Wild Animals

 Spencer's Smile

Dear Twos Families,

ROAR!!! That's what we did all week as we studied Wild Animals and
Going to the Zoo with your children. We had such a fun time playing
lions and tigers and bears and giraffes and zebras and all sorts of
creatures from many different habitats of the world. The children
shared which wild animals they knew about everyday and the sounds that
the animals made. We sang songs about kangaroos, zebras, elephants,
monkeys, and animals of the zoo and read GOODNIGHT GORILLA by Peggy
Rathmann too many times to count! (It's a classroom favorite.) Ava,
Riley, Claire, Noah, Adam, Austin, and Hailey all enjoyed gluing
yellow yarn onto their "lion's head" for the mane and creating
fabulous lion faces. Audrey, Ellie, Spencer, and William slithered
through the day while making sponge paint snakes. And many of the
children had lots of fun putting black stripes on our poor zebras who
had lost them! We ended the week with creating monkey puppets, which
the children can't wait to get their hands on, as they were playing
with them before the glue was even dried! And on Friday we climbed
aboard our "zoo train" and had a blast making one of our very own.

Hope you all get to monkey around this weekend, and we will see you
next week!

Wild Animals

Marin Dressing Up

Lions and Tigers and Bears- OH MY! Those are just a few of the animals
that were discussed in our Toddler class this week. As our wee ones dove into the amazing and intriguing world of "Wild Animals," we colored
giraffes, made spotted cheetah faces, funny monkeys, striped zebras and
amazing elephants! The kids also had a lot of fun running around class wearing our animals masks and making all the various sounds of
wild animals one would find in a jungle or a zoo! We also read some wonderful and wild books like, "Good Night Gorilla," "1, 2, 3 to the Zoo," "Wild Animals," "Animal Strike at the Zoo" and "Peek-a-Zoo." We were a wild bunch, but also very tamed! We had a blast. Great job to Brooklyn who did a great elephant impression and to Isaac and Olivia
with their marvelous monkey's! For music we stomped around like elephants, brayed like zebras, hissed like snakes and fluttered like
flamingos and so much more! Let us not forget the amazing dancing we had all week by everyone, your little ones just adore gettin' down with the music in class! Have fabulous weekend!
