In Spanish we did a directed drawing of Planeta Tierra.  (planet earth)  The children drew the continents and then pasted blue and green squares onto their drawing depicting the ocean and land masses.  Logan was so proud of his drawing as it was almost identical to mine.

Recycling

PK Color Prisms

Reduce, reuse and recycle!!  PreK students brainstormed ways we lessen  waste in our day to day lives.  Kristin shared that they have a compost bin at home and the kids were amazed that aluminum cans are recycled into scooters and bicycles and plastic to clothing.  Aidan exclaimed, "I'm wearing plastic?"  We all had a great laugh.T

In Spanish we did a directed drawing of Planeta Tierra.  (planet earth)  The children drew the continents and then pasted blue and green squares onto their drawing depicting the ocean and land masses.  Logan was so proud of his drawing as it was almost identical to mine.

Math was 'more and less' and we did a super fun activity using the kids to group them by category.  Children that have cats were in one spot, dogs another.  Dogs won!  We also learned that Ashton has the widest variety of pets including chickens!!  We worked together as a class to complete a worksheet and it is so great to see that the kids can now write their numbers from memory without my assistance.

Science included measuring and pouring dirt in our sensory bin.  Pearl loved discovering what items in the classroom magnets stick to and with each item would shout "Ms. Stacy, look!"  We also talked about tree rings and how they determine the age of trees and practiced our cutting skills while labeling the various parts of a tree.

You may notice our orange journals are back out daily this week for writing and we have been practicing not only our letters of the week, "Rr" and Ee," but have been illustrating the best ways we can help our environment by recycling.  We have begun to practice complete words now and next week we will begin last names.

In Art we made recycled "R"s out of magazines and Ashton was so proud of his he asked for me to hang it up immediately.  I was happy to oblige.  We practiced illustrating and worked as groups to come up with a collaborative mini poster of how to recycle in different places.  We also put together a story sequece and colored them after cutting the story out and placing it in the correct order of events.  We are will be dying eggs Friday during our Spring Holiday party.

Our student of the week was Dylan Masuda and he was a huge help asking to stack chairs and assist with any tasks that needed completing.  A real  star!  A big 'Thank You!' to Charlie's mom for bringing us the white paper, we really appreciate it and Charlie was so proud!

Friday was both Earth Day and our Spring Fling!  We went on a Scavenger Hunt, had a dance party and treats after our learning time.  Fun was had by all and the children are super excited for the special upcoming weekend.  Enjoy your families this weekend and hopefully the sun will make an appearance!

Update on Ms. Lindsi:  Her doctor will release her May 16th.  We will continue to update you as we know.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!  Those have been the 3 R's we have been learning about this week for our Mother Earth and Recycling theme.  We have learned a bit about our planet and some of the things we can do to take care of our environment.
We learned that our environment is where we live, like or homes, and the places we go, like school.  Our environment also includes our neighborhoods, our towns, even our state, our country and our world.  Most of the kids have real connections with their homes and their town.  Many of the kids excitedly shout that they live in Oregon too!  The kids take a lot of pride in things they know well and their enthusiasm is awesome.
We read some great books including; The Earth is my Friend, Why Recycle?, and The Giving Tree.  And since we were learning about talking care of the planet we also revisited some of our friendship songs and games including "Make new friends" and "We are Friends" which we sing while holding hands.
Reusing materials was highlighted in almost all of our areas and activities this week.  In the block area we had boxes, cardboard tubes, plastic tubs and other "junk" and recyclable bits to build with.  Palmer and Kaden really enjoyed this activity a lot and made some very cool ships and towers with these things.  In art, we made junk sculptures.  The kids chose three to four things out of a big box of "junk" and then taped them together.  After that they painted their creations.  These turned out so amazing.  Ellie B. made a very cool binocular set out of tubes, a cork and an old ribbon spool.  We talked about reusing objects at strategy meetings and during one meeting, we looked at a tube that held easel paper and we talked about the things we could turn that tube into.  Many of the children suggested a lightsaber (which is not a surprise because a large portion of our class is pretty much obsessed with all things Star Wars.)  Then Finley upped the ante by saying "No!  We should make it into a REAL light saber!"  After a few suggestions from teachers of things that were not weapons (including turning it into a mustache, which was so funny and everyone got to show us their mustache voices.  I encourage everyone to ask their child to use their mustache voice- it is the funniest thing), the kids began to get a little more creative.  Mason suggested a trumpet and after that Parker piped in "Make a  Tuba!"
Our letter of the week was f.  Upper case F is for Finley.  Yahoo Finley!  Ellie F. was very excited that her last name begins with F!   We focused on lower case f.  We made some very pretty flowery f's and practiced making f sounds.  You can feel an f on your hand if you put your hand in front of your mouth so it is a fun letter to practice saying and it is fun to feel if an f is in a word.  Friends and fun, two f words that are a perfect pair.
Thanks to all of the families that have brought in an 8 by 10 family photo or copy of one.  If you have not done so yet it is not too late.  We will be starting our project next week so please bring one in next week.  We can make a copy for you if you need us too.  Please feel free to ask Mr. Thomas or Ms. Angie know if you have any questions about the project or about anything happening in class.  Have a fun weekend!

Recycle

 Picnic Time

Hello Twos families!
This week we have been talking a lot about Earth Day, and what exactly the "earth" is.  Many children were surprised to find out that the earth is our world and the planet that we live on.  But many already knew about recycling, which was an awesome discovery!   The children had many ideas about how to keep our world a beautiful place to live, such as making sure to pick up trash and throw things away, reusing items to make them into something else, and gardening and growing things.  All contribute to "keeping our world pretty," as Neve says.  Audrey, Austin, Noah, Sadie, and Hailey all created art collages out of recycled materials, and the finished pieces even have the look of modern sculpture to them.   It was very interesting to see which recycled materials were chosen for the art piece.  Many children loved the bottle caps and egg cartons.  Maybe it is the smoothness of the caps and fun shape of the carton that appealed to them?  I always find it fascinating to see how our children come up with the art they make!  Ellie, Maddie, Adam, Austin, and William all helped paint two "Mother Earths" for us, and they used their handprints for the landforms.    Yes, they had the whole world in their hands!  Come by soon and take a look at all of your children's amazing work.

See you all next week.

Recycle

This week in the Toddler Class we focused on the importance of recycling and the upcoming holiday, Easter! Our class had a blast decorating eggs, whether it was with paint, or stickers or even coloring, they all turned out so lovely and decorative! Also in preparation for Mr./Ms. Easter Bunny the little ones each made their
own Easter bunny masks! Though we did a lot of art for Easter, this week was also about taking care of our Mother Earth by recycling. We made coffee filter globes, recycled collage art/posts and much more.  Our tiny tots are so great about saving things that can be reused, We can't believe that 1yr and 2yr olds know about recycling.  Wonderful job
parents and guardians! This week we read Spring and Easter
books like, "The Velveteen Rabbit," "Spring Peeps," "What Do I Eat," "Bunny Trouble," and "Spring Surprises!"

We hope our Toddler Families have a wonderful Easter weekend! Before we wrap up what we did this
week, we want to say a few more things, first off get well to our little buddy Isaac who sadly got an ouchy and now has to wear a cast for awhile, get well soon! Also, well done to our big boy Jack who had his first visit to the 2's class and did a beyond fabulous job! You are indeed a big boy now! We
are so proud how far you've come since September! Also, thank you to Ms. Janine for helping out our class
this week, as well as Ms. Suzie (as always), the kids love your company so very much!

Have a great weekend and Easter everyone!

Love Ms. Courtney and Ms. Judy
