We read "The Busy Spider" and made a spider (arana) web while seated in a circle (circulo). Super fun and Bodie enjoyed tossing the yarn to a friend (amigo) and saying "it's yours!" (es tuyo). If we are ever a little late for Spanish (espanol) the kids are quick to get me back on track! They will ask "What about Spanish?" Feels great to know they are so enthused to learn a new language! If you ever want more, just ask! I am happy to send home items to practice. |

Dear PEAKE Academy Families, Thank you to the families that have turned in their summer plans sheet to us. This truly helps us plan for the summer months as our teachers would like to enjoy the fun of summer as well. The summer sheets were attached to your child's sign in sheet if you did not receive yours. Please remember that signing your child in and out is not only an important safety step, but also required by the State of Oregon. If you would like a reminder on how to sign in and out please see the front desk. We also utilize the sheets to get important information to you and your family, so please check it each day of attendance. We would hate for you to miss any upcoming events in your child's classroom. It is official!!! Peake Academy will be offering a Private Kindergarten program beginning 2011/2012 school year. Frogs & Birds
This week in Pre-K we are studying Frogs and Birds. The children loved making a frog and learning about its lifecycle. We played leap frog, sang "Five Green and Speckled Frogs" and talked about what lives in/above and below a pond.
Letters of the week are "Ff," and "Ww." We practice writing daily, so feel free to practice at home too! Bodie wrote all of his F's and his name completely and beamed with pride. The practice really shows!
You may wonder, "Why do they have Station Time?" Station time is 30-40 minutes long and consists of different activities which rotate every 10 minutes. This is a great opportunity to expose your children to different partners in play, activities and social interactions that may not occur in their day to day life. For example: boys love to build. When given the choice, they choose 9-10x - Legos. Girls will usually choose Princess activities or artwork. Stations are a chance for children to experience different activities and build confidence within the tasks. Our Easter grass bin has been extremely popular with all of the kids this week. A sensory bin is filled with Easter grass, chopsticks are provided and items are hidden within the grass. The children learn to cooperate with one another to not only find, but sort the items by color. While it may appear as "play time" it is building communication and social skills, color recognition and sorting, and fine motor as they maneuver their chopsticks throughout the bin. The smiles on the faces of children as they accomplish balancing blocks stacked 25+ high or a child as they paint the rainbow in the correct color spectrum of the rainbow for the first time is priceless. Our children learn through play and it is essential to their academic, emotional and social development.
Cause and effect came into play this week as the kids moved bubbles. We used our breath, straws and fans to manipulate and move them across the room. Laughter was contagious and they were amazed at what can be accomplished with focus.
Music and movement consisted of some serious dancing and now the kids are making requests. No matter what new songs I bring in they still have favorites and we dance up a storm! One parent volunteer commented "That's all it takes to get them to listen? I'm doing this at home!!" I have two kids and music always does the trick! Try it out, you will be amazed! You can teach your children your address and phone # simply through song, give it a try!
We sorted, categorized, talked about colors and blending and what flies, swims and walks. Super fun answers always lead to explanations and always more questions. Everyday is filled with laughter, love and pride as each child finds their role in our classroom. The pride they take in themselves is really something to behold. If you haven't had the opportunity to come in and spend some quality time please let us know as visitors are always welcome.
Update on Ms. Lindsi new family:
She and baby Addi came to visit on Wednesday. The family is doing amazing and Ms. Lindsi's doctor feels that she needs a bit more time to rest. She potentially may be returning the first of May. We will let you know as we know more. We appreciate your support during this time as Ms. Lindsi spends time with her new baby and want to thank Ms. Stacy for the absolutely amazing job she is doing with the class. Our Pre K class has surpassed the goals for the year and Ms. Stacy has done a phenomenal job continuing to challenge them as they continue to learn new concepts.

Frogs and Birds
This week's theme was "Frogs and Birds." What a fun week for movement, stories, conversation and scientific exploration. We hopped, flew, discovered, got a bit messy and had fun! For Science this week, we read From Tadpole to Frog. It was neat to watch the tadpole grow and change into a cute hoppy frog. We played with plastic frogs in little "frog habitats" that we made using sticks, moss, tree bark, plants and other items from nature. We used magnifying glasses to explore this world close up like real scientists. Monica was very excited, saying "I see forteen sizes!" Since we are learning about both frogs and birds and both come from eggs, we talked about other things we know of that come from eggs. We were so excited to remember that ladybugs and butterflies also come from eggs. Palmer even remembered that ladybug eggs are yellow. In art, we made "bowl" frogs, birds' nests, shaker eggs, and owl stick puppets. We played some tunes and danced with our shaker eggs. The kids really know how to boogie. We even did the chicken dance because chickens are birds. We read some great froggie and bird stories this week. We read The Big Wide Mouthed Frog. The kids showed off their big wide mouths. Finley was inspired enough to say he would "be a big wide mouthed frog." We read Ms. Angie's favorite story from when she was three Are You My Mother. Ms. Angie still has mixed emotions about the snort. Before we read Just How Long Can a Long String Be?, we asked the kids that question. Olivia replied with outstretched arms. So she was asked How long is that? She answered "forty-five cents." Our letter of the week was e. We used eggs to do many of our activities this week. We listened to eggs to see if we could guess what was inside and we had to listen carefully to tell which eggs had the same thing inside. We also painted eggs and painted e's with eggs and erasers. We used plastic eggs because a half egg makes a nice circle print. We made a class name poster to find how many e's in each child's names. Reeve and Keeley both have 3! Thanks Rory for all of the art supply stuff. We will have so much fun with it all! If you have not done so already please bring in an 8 by 10 family photo or a copy of one. We are going to do a very fun art activity with them in the next few weeks. Thank you!

Birds & Frogs
|
Hello Twos Families!
This week the children had fun learning all about birds and frogs! They were able to make their own birds out of feathers and design their own birds' nests. Adam, Ava, Ellie, and Noah enjoyed making their own wide-mouthed frogs that we have hung up on our wall surrounded by green roller-painted "lily pads" created by the entire class. Hailey, Claire, Neve, and Riley were able to place the "lilies" inside the lily pads at the end of the week, completing our pretty pond scene. Come and take a look if you can! There was also quite a bit of building, dress-up, and "cooking" going on in class as well, with some children even making "smoothies!" (It's great when they pretend to make healthy foods!) We were also able to design some lovely tissue paper art with spring colors. Next week we will be talking more about spring and about Earth Day as well. See you then! |

Birds & Frogs

Wow, this week just flew by, didn't it? And speaking of flew, our tiny tots did some high flying projects this week on birds and some fantastic and fabulous frogs as well! We dove into our week by making what of course, birds nests complete with eggs! This project was very much enjoyed by all the students who took part in creating little robin's nests with twigs and leaves and then adding some robin's eggs in for the final touch. We also had a messy, but marvelous time making bird feeders. Little Finn took his precious time rolling the feeder around in the tray just to get the perfect amount of seeds on for the birdies! I have to say all the kids were pretty patient and neat with the bird feeder project, considering we had to do it one child at a time. They are becoming so mature so fast! On Wednesday the class made bird watching binoculars with toilet paper rolls and decorated them with feathers. Cohen was very pleased with his creation and said, "My dad will love this!" I am sure he did Cohen, you did a fantastic job with it!
But, this week was not just about birds, but frogs as well. Thursday we cut out large green frogs and colored a variety of speckles on them. They turned out great! Just go see Yush and Jake's creation outside our classroom! Our class sang a variety of froggy and bird tunes such as, "5 Green and Speckled Frogs" and "The Owl." As for books, goodness, we read so many! A few class favorites this week were "Father Goose," "Five Little Ducks," "Colors: Green & Blue" and "Moo-Quack-Oink-Baah!"
GREAT drop off to Lucy T. and Luke this past Wednesday and Thursday..they are adjusting so well!!! We were so happy too see that, as were your moms! Also, we started doing some Easter art this week. If you would like share any Easter crafts with our class please feel free to let us know, we'd love to have you in class!
Love, Ms. Courtney and Ms. Judy
Special Thanks To: Ms. Suzan, Ms. Rebecca and Ms. Kathia (and Carlitos) for the help this week!
