We read "The Busy Spider" and made a spider (arana) web while seated in a circle (circulo).  Super fun and Bodie enjoyed tossing the yarn to a friend (amigo) and saying "it's yours!" (es tuyo).  If we are ever a little late for Spanish (espanol) the kids are quick to get me back on track!  They will ask "What about Spanish?"  Feels great to know they are so enthused to learn a new language!  If you ever want more, just ask!  I am happy to send home items to practice.

Backyard Bugs

Week 2

Dear  PEAKE Academy Families,

It's hard to believe that we are into the month of April!!!  Spring has yet to make its illustrious appearance and summer is drawing near.  Please do not let your guard down when it comes to keeping our kids healthy and safe.  This is the time of year that illnesses creep up on us when we least expect them.  To help us keep everyone healthy and safe the following are guidelines for keeping your child home:

  • a heavy "cold" and/or hacking cough, even without fever
  • a fever of over 99 degrees.  stay at home for 24 hours fever free and unmedicated
  • vomiting - they should be able to keep something down for 8-12 hours
  • diarrhea - unless doctor approves
  • unexplained rash

Please call and leave a message on our main line  503.675.7529 to let us know that your child will be out.

Backyard Bugs

Gardens

Backyard Bugs and the letters "Bb" and "Ii" were the stars of the week.  We started something new this week with our letters and a poster board is up so the children can come and tell me everytime they press their "brain button" (nose) and come up with a new word.  They love it and Olive came up with 20 by herself!

Our Sensory bin was filled with Easter grass and bugs with tweezers to work on fine motor skills.  Bouncing a ping pong ball into cups is a new hit.  Magnets, hammering, floor puzzles and painting were featured in Stations and Ashleigh was excited to open Pet Shop daily.

Bugs were all the rage in class daily, including ants on a picnic, crayon melted dragonflies, fingerprint bug collages and ladybugs.  We keep increasing the difficulty in art as the children can't get enough and that is fine with me!!

Math involved writing our numbers 6-10 and adding and subtracting numbers from 1-10.  Their math facts are coming to them more readily now and they astound me daily.

We learned about insects and their body parts.  Be sure to ask your child the following questions:  "how many body parts does an insect have?", "do they have a spine?", "how many legs do they have?", "are they born live or from eggs?".  Lots of praise when the get them correct, high-fives are a multiple daily occurence in Pre-K!!!!

Science was all about light.  We brainstormed where light comes from and the entire class gets excited when we can exceed the prior days' total.

Music and Movement were and are, always super exciting!!!!  We sang "Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee", and practiced Yoga poses named after animals.  I told a story and we acted it out using only our bodies.  Leah loved acting them out and Sikha kept saying "whee!" during a pose.

I really want to thank the parent volunteers that have taken the time out of their busy schedules to come and see what PreK is all about.  You are appreciated and the kids love seeing you!  Thanks again!!

Backyard BugsPS Water PLAY

The week's Backyard Bugs theme was so much fun.  One of the things the kids loved so much about this theme was being able to tell all of their friends all of their buggy experiences.  Every page of every story was followed by kids' hands popping up excitedly with eager faces ready to share their experience with the group.  We read Creepy Crawlies from A to Z.  It was a non fiction book with many interesting facts about bugs, insects and spiders.  The kids thought the Banana Slug was so funny and that prompted statements such as Mason's "We don't eat it!"  We learned about the biggest spider, the Goliath Spider.  Amelia piped up, with arms spread as wide as can be, "I saw a spider THIS BIG!!!"  Everyone had a story to tell.
In math, this week we learned the difference between insects, bugs and spiders.  We counted legs and body parts so we could identify different buggy creatures for what they were.  We also worked on patterns.  We made caterpillars with patterned body segments.  This was fun to do as a class.  Kids were eager to shout out what the next color would be to help complete the caterpillar.
In science, we hunted through containers of sticks, leaves, grass, dirt and other 'backyard bits' to find plastic bugs and rubber worms.  The kids loved the stretchiness of the worms.  Ellie F.  let us all know that she is a "worm saver."  We also learned about the life cycles of butterflied and ladybugs.
In art, we painted butterflies and paper plate snails.  We made such cute bumble bees.  The kids did a great job cutting out bumble bee stripes out of black paper to glue to their bumble bees.  A few kids had black spots instead of stripes but that is ok.  They were still pretty cute.
We sang "bringing home a baby bumble bee" and "the ants go marching" this week.  On of this week's musical highlights was during bookmaking time when Brodie and Mason broke out into a nice rendition of "the itsy bitsy spider" while drawing their pictures.  We played a super fun game called Bumble Bees Back to Back.  We flew around like bumble bees untill the bumble bees were given instructions such as "Bumble bees, toe to toe" or "bumble bees elbow to elbow."  Watching the kids fly around and then try to go ear to ear of belly to belly was so funny and the kids had the best time doing it!
Big welcomes to our two new friends this week.  We are so glad to have you join us Asher and Autumn.  It is going to be a fun spring in school and we are happy you will be here to share it with us.
Happy Birthday to Aiden!  You are 4 now big guy!  So Exciting!  Thank you to  Aiden's family for such a fun party.  Thank you to Mr. Alex, Aiden's daddy, for bringing the ambulance and showing us all the cool stuff inside and letting us hear the siren.  Aiden gave a nice warning for us to close our ears.  It was a loud siren but SO Cool!  It was a lot of fun to check it all out!

If you have any questions please see Mr. Thomas or Ms. Angie.  Thanks!

Bugs

Dear Twos Families,
This week our little ones devoted their time to learning all about bugs in their many forms-- lots and lots of legs, winged bugs, bugs that change into other bugs, tiny bugs, large bugs, the list goes on and on!  The children created their own ladybug and bumblebee pictures as well as made their own "bug" sculptures out of play dough.  Ellie, Audrey, Ava, and Noah were able to really put their "feet" into their work by making "footprint" butterflies.  Neve, Hailey, Riley, Claire, and Carson created beautiful garden scenes where one would find bugs in the wild.  And many children were able to put-together their own caterpillars out of egg carton pieces and paint them.  We had lots of fun allowing the dried caterpillars to burrow and dig in our "garden" sensory table.  Besides bugs, there was A LOT of Lego building going on by Adam, Austin, Flynn, Spencer, and Noah, and the creations were everything from trains to boats to castles.  At the end of the week, Hailey, Riley, and Noah really got into trying to write their own names, so we may expand on this next week!

See you on Monday!

Bugs

Tods Yellow Butterflies

This week our Toddler class went buggy as we talked, discovered, created and read all about various creepy crawly and sometimes cute BUGS! We read "The Hungry Caterpillar," "The Very Busy Spider," "Glitter Bugs" and "The Caterpillar Dance." We sang some of our favorite tunes as well to celebrate our theme, like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "I am Bringing Home a Baby Bumble Bee."

The art the terrific Tods did this week was fabulous!  We did egg carton caterpillars, thumb print lady bugs (complete with a poem), butterfly handprints, buggy coloring and insect rubber stamping!  Yes, we were a busy class this week!!! Though we had a lot of friends in class this week, we have to say, everyone was so wonderful! Luke, who returned from a long break came to class and did just an excellent job on his return! Also, we had a new friend join us on Thursday, Arianna, who will be with us this month. She was spectacular and happy as could be! Welcome to class Arianna! Always we welcomed back another friend we missed dearly, Scottie.  We were very pleased to see her sweet smile back in class with our friends. Ali, you did a simply splendid job in class this week, we are so glad to see you having fun and laughing! Isaac, great job on your first full day in the Two's class, you really are a "big boy" now. We would also like to say congratulations to our buddy, Cannen, who is now an official big brother; congrats to you and your family! Cohen and Lucy T. you both have come so far this month and love to see how you both have progressed, not just being comfortable, but in doing art and being with your friends!! Brookie and Kai, what can we say about you two girls...we love the laughs you bring to the class, you make everyone giggle, thanks to you both for being so fun!

Love, Ms. Courtney & Ms. Judy
