Spanish featured animals (animales) and some new insects too!  The kids love when I draw on the board and they guess which animal it is in Spanish.  They now only answer in Spanish, no more English during this special time.  (espanol solamente)

Life Cycles

Spring

Week 1

Dear  PEAKE Academy Families,

It's hard to believe that we are into the month of April!!!  Spring has yet to make its illustrious appearance and summer is drawing near.  Please do not let your guard down when it comes to keeping our kids healthy and safe.  This is the time of year that illnesses creep up on us when we least expect them.  To help us keep everyone healthy and safe the following are guidelines for keeping your child home:

  • a heavy "cold" and/or hacking cough, even without fever
  • a fever of over 99 degrees.  stay at home for 24 hours fever free and unmedicated
  • vomiting - they should be able to keep something down for 8-12 hours
  • diarrhea - unless doctor approves
  • unexplained rash

Please call and leave a message on our main line  503.675.7529 to let us know that your child will be out.

Spring

PK Cup Stacking

Spring has sprung in PreK!  This week we practiced writing our numbers 1-5, sorted beans, stacked cups and had a blast making bubble bowls.  Logan was very familiar with the cup stacking as he had seen it on 'Minute to Win it' and loved showing his classmates how it is done.  We discovered beans aren't just for eating but by sorting them the children worked on their math and then turned the different colored beans into art!

The lifecycle of a frog was studied as a group and we watched a classic Sesame Street video that showed the cycle with music.  Sheynna said her favorite part was when the tail falls off and we learned that it is actually absorbed as nutrients to assist in the frogs transition.  The lifecycle of the butterfly was also studied and we made geometric patterned butterflies and caterpillars.  You will be hearing about the arrival of caterpillars soon as they arrive in our classroom and we actually watch the lifecycle daily in class with the finale being the release of real butterflies!

We sang the "Ants Go Marching" and made up new and silly endings to each verse, great way to begin our day with laughter and fun.  Dylan Masuda could be seen marching around in the classroom like an ant.  "Toad, Frog, Pollywog" accompanied by a silly animated music video was a huge hit.  The children learn so quickly with music and Grace wanted to watch it over and over.

Our tissue paper butterflies are on display and really light up our classroom.  Even when it is gloomy outside the sun is shining in our room.  Friday we made spring flower necklaces then drew a picture of ourselves playing a joke for April Fools' Day.  Pearl loved telling me that I had a nut on my head and saying "April Fools"!

This week's theme is Spring, so we have been making spring happen all week in our class.  We have been talking about spring weather, spring activities, and spring things all week!
We have read several cute spring stories including Spring Things, Splish, Splash, Spring, and Groundhog Weather School.  The kids liked the story Who's Awake in Springtime?  Parker said "I think sheep sleep the mostest."
We sang songs about the weather and about baby animals for springtime music.  We sang "The ants go marching."  We love that song and have a great time marching around the class and acting out the motions of all the ants.  I love Brodie's enthusiasm for this song,  any song really.  As a special treat we also got to listen to the song as a story CD.  It was a little different than the way we are used to doing it, but we loved hearing it anyway.  We sang several rain songs and afterward we put on our rain coats and galoshes and went out (into our rainy classroom) and went puddle stomping.  So much fun!   Mason loves to kick the puddle water up at people and get them all wet and Henry does such a good jump into a puddle.  Then we hang up our things and have pretend hot chocolate.  It is so amazing how patient everyone is while waiting for pretend marshmallows.  We are not so sure the response would be the same with the real thing.
In science, we used measuring spoons and cups to scoop and fill up measuring cups with seeds.  We are planning on planting some of these seeds in April.  It is so exciting to see how much our radish and carrot seeds have grown.  Rylee checks on them everyday and gives us a report about their progress.  They are getting tall.  It will be so cool when the roots begin to grow bigger.  Come in and check them out.
The letter of the week is C.  Cash and Charles both have names that begin with C.  We made cotton ball C's.  We painted the cotton balls by putting them in a jar with a bit of paint and rolled the jar around our group circle and then *poof* colorful cotton balls.  We also worked on patterns by making caterpillars with alternating colored segments.  Thanks Cash for bringing in spring colored cookies.  The kids thought they were delicious.  Anna said "Yeah, I have a cookie face because Cash's cookies were so yummy!"
Cash, We have loved having you in class.  Your spirit for fun and caring will be missed when you are gone.
Parents,  please bring in an 8 by 10 inch family photo.  A copy would be great or we can make a copy of an original.  We are going to be doing a super cute project this month!  If you have any questions please see Mr. Thomas or Ms. Angie.  Thanks!

 Hello Twos Families!

Welcome back from Spring Break!  This week we are welcoming the season of spring by talking about the changes spring brings-- from cherry blossoms and leaves on the trees and  to blooming daffodils and baby animals.  The children have been able to create their own class cherry tree and personal flowers, and we have been able to change our "rainy day scene" into a blossoming garden!  Please come by and have a look when you have time.  Ellie, Claire, Sadie, Ava, and Adam were all able to create their own "handprint" flowers this week that we will also be adding to our garden scene.  The children have even enjoyed pretending to be "seeds" and growing into flowers after Ms. Nicole pretends to water them with rain and shine the sun brightly over them.  It is a fun game that all love to play!  We have been singing songs about spring and reading stories about baby spring animals.  The Runaway Bunny and My Friend, Rabbit, are class favorites.

See you all next week!

Spring

Toddler Snack

The sun is here! At last, the Toddler class was more than happy to usher in the new season of SPRING! We started off this sunshined-filled week with spending our Monday with our neighbor's, the 2's Class. Both classes came together to paint a giant sun and clouds of white to put on our blue walls, making our room in Toddler's very
'Springy!" Continuing with our Spring theme thing this week our class finger painted with yellow, made a spring collage of various
pastel/Spring type colors (using various materials), colored butterflies and everyone made their own Mr. Sun!

We read a ton of great Spring stories like: "Sail Away," "Spring Peeps," "Mister Sun,"
and "Dora's Storybook Collection." The class loves their Dora book.  We can't tell you how how many times Lucy M. requested the tales in the Dora collection.

This week we celebrated another special birthday, Brooklyn
(aka: Brookie) turned 2! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROOKIE!!! Thank you for sharing such yummy cookies with the class, we know Jack could have eaten the entire tray! This week the kids were really great. Lucy T. has come so far and is just one of the crew now and Zoie is so funny strutting into class ready to start her day, we adore them all! Yush,
we can not forgot your progess SPEAKING, you are talking more and more to us, finally! We knew it would happen one day. Isaac, Olivia and Sadie, thank you so much for constantly being such wonderful helpers. Mia and Milla we hope that you both recover soon, we missed your faces in class and Luke, hope your vacation is/was fun!
