Week 4

Dear  PEAKE Academy Families,

What an amazing week it has been with our Spring Break Camps!  We are feeling Summer just around the corner.  It is time to let us know your plans for the Summer to ensure your child's spot in camp in your preferred days.  Please see us with that information.

Author Studies

Pre K Table Time

Spring has sprung in PreK!!  We spent our week learning about the "bones" of a story.  Zoi was very good at raising her hand every time she heard a character in the story "Swimmy" by Leo Lionni.  We talked about the title, setting, characters, problem and resolution.  Cash loved the art project that accompanied "Swimmy."  The ocean scenes featured varies mediums, using sponges, fingerprints, stamping, and tissue to recreate a scene from the book.  They are gorgeous and currently on display.

Dr. Seuss is always a favorite and his style of writing allows the children to complete the sentences themselves.  We made plates of "Green Eggs and Ham" and the famous red and white hat by using a pattern with squares.  Grace was so proud when hers was hung on the board!

The sensory bin was turned into our Science area the first two days of class so our little gardeners could plant their own beans.  We will keep them in class so their growth can be graphed and the children can water them until they grow.  Aidan loved getting dirty and was so excited to water his plant "all by myself." (himself)

The letter of the week was "Ss" so a tongue twister was in order.  Seven silver swans swam silently seaward.  The kids loved reciting it and trying to get faster without their tongue getting tied in a knot.  We practiced writing our "Ss" and brainstormed words.  Sheynna realized that quite a few of us had "S" names so we used this "teaching moment" to go ahead and graph how many children had names that began with the same letter.  Turns out we have a whole lot of "A" and "S" names in our class!

Music brought a new song, and alot of laughter to class.  It is called "If You're a Kid" and has a rap-feel.  Your kids know how to dance with attitude!  Kennedy spent the first day with the song humming it and dancing from place to place.  So cute!  Music is so important and builds confident children who feel good about expressing themselves so it is a daily activity and a great way to start our day.

Pennies were the first item we used to measure and count with this week.  The children were excited to walk in the door and start counting pennies.  Look in their folders on Friday and try the exercise at home.  They are very proud of all they can accomplish with counting.  On a side note, restroom trips are now accompanied by counting by tens, hundreds and thousands.  This is by the childrens request and I am always happy to oblige. They are all so excited to count while in the restroom and sing on the way back.  Every moment of the day is utilized!  We also measured various classroom items using our paper rulers and talked about what items weigh more or less than others.  I brought in a scale to let the kids weigh themselves and will keep notes and follow-up again at the end of the year so they can see how much they have grown.  Sikha was super excited about this as she is growing quickly and loves reminding me of how big she is by comparing her height to mine.

We continue to work on conflict resolution daily and have been role-playing so the students can make their own choices.  This has been extremely helpful as they have begun to work things out on their own and only come to talk to us when they really need the help.  Listening to their communication skills grow as they problem solve is so rewarding and a little praise goes a long way so we make sure to follow up with them and let them know how proud we are when they decide to work it out on their own.

Author StudiesTable Time

This week's spring break theme was centered around studying some of our favorite author/illustrators in our "Author Studies" camp.  In the preschool, we enjoyed studying some of the classics like Dr. Suess and Eric Carle.  These are year-round favorites and it was nice to mix up some of the familiar works with some that are new to us.
We studied several Dr. Suess books this week.  His use of rhyme and fun illustrations makes learning a lot of fun.  We looked at some real pictures of Dr. Suess but most kids still think he is the Cat in the hat.  A few of his stories that we read include Horton Hears a Who, The Cat in the Hat and Fox in Socks.  We painted stripy cat in the hat, hats.  We went nontraditional and had purple, green, orange...well, all kinds of colors of stripes on our hats.  We also counted turtles in tuttle tuttle trees and made some green eggs in ham art.  There a suprisingly small amount of kids who thought they would like to eat green eggs and ham.
One of our favorite authors is Eric Carle.  We read a lot of his books throughout the year.  Mason was very excited that he has a copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar at home.  That is such a great book.  We talked about why the caterpillar ate so much and Monica said it was because "he had strawberries, plums and oranges."  Mac said "He ate a chicken."   I don't really remember the hungry caterpillar eating a chicken but maybe Mac has a different version of the book than we read in class.  In art, we made Caterpillars out of egg cartons.  We also did some finger painting because many of Eric Carle's illustrations begin as fingerpaintings.
We also read Swimmy by Leo Leoni.  Such a good story and the kids were a little nervous about the tuna fish and had a lot of empathy for Swimmy the fish.  We did some paint printing and wax resist to make some beautiful undersea scenes similar to what Leo Lioni does.  The kids also enjoyed swimming around the room and watching out for the Tuna.
Our letter of the week is b.  We are focusing on the lowercase letters and b is a tricky one.  We glued buttons to b's.  We each got 15 buttons and the kids had no problems counting to 15.  The pink buttons were the most desired and so we needed to make a one pink button rule so that there wound be enough for everyone who wanted a pink button.  The kids did a good job sharing even if it was a little hard to share a pink button with a friend.  We are so proud of everyone.  We also used balloons to see how tall we were and sang the balloon song.  We love the balloon song.
Happy Happy Birthday Rory!!!  Thanks for the fun party and for always being so kind to everyone.  We love you!
Parents, please bring in a large photo of your child or family.  An 8 by 10 would be great.  We can make a color copy of it also if you need to have the original back.  We are going to do a super fun project in the next few weeks and would love it if everyone could make one.  If you have any questions please see Mr. Thomas or Ms. Angie.  Thanks!

Artists

 LOVE Claire

Hello Twos families!

This week we have been discussing "artists" and what it means to be
one. The children have learned about famous painters such as Claude
Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Georges Seurat, and they have tried their
hands at creating art in the"spirit" of the artist discussed.
Everyone created lovely Impressionist water lily pictures and their
own sunflower pictures early in the week. Hailey, Maddie, Ellie,
William, Ava, and Claire also tried out "pointillism" in the spirit of
Seurat and created "dot" paintings. Audrey and Noah also created some
very impressive sculptures out of play dough, and all of the children
were able to experiment with painting in any colors that suited their
fancy. We had many "blue periods", "red periods" and "purple periods!"

See you next week! Happy Spring!

Reading with Friends

Hello Toddler families,

We have lots of budding little artists in our class as we are learning about some of our greatest artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Georgia O'Keefe.

Your little ones have created lily pad paintings using pastel colors, sunflower gardens with yellow, black and green construction paper then our little ones did a painting with Q-tips.  They though that was great fun.

This week we are learning the letter X and the color yellow.

With Spring in the air we are singing songs, reading poems and stories about this beautiful season. The songs are, "Spring Is Here," "The Days of Spring" and poetry called  "The Spring Poem and Beautiful Rainbow Came."

We are so happy that are new friends Lucy T, Ali and Luke are settling in, enjoying the class and having fun doing art, music and making new friends.  Great job little ones.

We would like to thank Ms. Candice for coming in to help us out for Spring break and also bringing in her lovely son in to participate in our class. Hope to see you both again.

Have a great weekend!
