Pets
Playful Pets are the theme this week in PreK. We started the week talking about responsibility and what it means to take care of a pet. Each child received a pet of their own on Wednesday and were instructed that if the pet was found lying about that it would go to the pound. Amazing how quickly they figured out to be responsible!! They named their pets, made collars, leashes and tags for them and we talked about where each one will live. Imaginations were in full effect!!
The leprechauns came to our classroom and paid a visit!! A trail of magic dust was left all over the classroom and a special note that led to a Science project (pistachio pudding) was the height of the day. We proceeded to decorate shamrocks and learn about why/how the holiday is celebrated. Dylan Masuda wanted to know if they were going to fly into the classroom overnight. The air was electric with excitement!
We have switched out our rice in the sensory bin with a completely different texture. Straw! Watching the children experiment with something they don't usually see in their everyday life has been interesting. They even got their "pets" involved. Listening to them work out differences with each other warms our hearts and we know that the lessons being taught everyday are resonating with each child.
Math consisted of dot-to-dots and graphing, sorting, adding and subtracting Lucky Charms cereal. A sweet treat! Logan couldn't wait to eat his math project and make the numbers lower during subtraction by making his "magically" disappear!
Letters of the Week are "Pp," and "Dd." We have, once again, hit a new record of 63 words beginning with the letter P. Kristin walked right into class with "princess" and "penguin." Your children continue to amaze me as I wrap up the discussion and they come yelling different words to me all day. They are constantly thinking about how to get more words. Continue the good work at home!
We enjoyed money rubbings during station time and spoke about how many pennies make up each coin. In art we made aquariums, shamrocks, and directed drawings of birds. Directed drawings are now a weekly event as the kids are so impressed with what they are capable of accomplishing. My favorite part is having each one of them show the rest of the class their artwork and everyone talks about their drawing. Olive enjoys being in front of the class and showing how well she can draw. Be on the "lookout" for your childrens' drawings coming home and maybe even ask them to teach you how they did it!
Rhythming words were discussed and what better books to read than Dr. Seuss? After all, "A person's a person, no matter how small." -Dr. Seuss

Pets
This week's "Pets" theme was so much fun. We all love animals and talking about the animals we love and care for and the ones we want to love and care for is such a great way to get to know eachother even better. Several of the children brought stuffed pets from home to show and take care of during school. Natalie's pet unicorn was certainly original and the girls thought it was so pretty and Jackson's pet duck was obviously very very loved. We talked a lot about our pets. Rylee said "My pet likes candy and fruit treats and candy...gummy bears and fruit candies." It is possible that Rylee may be actually talking about herself a bit. It was nice to have Nolan's stuffed pet, Big Dog visit. We have talked about Big Dog a lot this year. Thanks Nolan for bringing him in to meet everybody. We also had a very special visitor for pet week. Ellie B.'s puppy (who easily outweighs any of the children) Moose was able to come in and spend a little time with us on Thursday. The kid's loved Moose and were so sweet and gentle with him. He looked so festive in his green shirt for St. Patrick's day and the kids laughed and laughed to see a doggie in a t-shirt. Olivia really could have spent all day giving Moose hugs and was a little disappointed that he could not stay all day. In art, we made kitty pictures with paint and used triangles and circles to make goldfish in bowls. We made a big pet graph in math to see what kinds of pets we had the most of. We also used a scale to predict which animals would weigh more and less. Our letter of the week was a. We are focusing on lower case letters now. We looked for lowercase "a"s in our names. We found that more kids have a little a in their name than don't. We also listed to and sang "The ants go marching" and decorated "a"s with ants. "The ants go marching" is one of our favorite songs and it is fun to sing and march and act out all of the motions in class. We had such a great St. Patrick's Day party. We listened to The Best St. Patrick's Day! on CD. It was funny and played great Irish music between pages. We made wonderful shamrock necklaces. Each Shamrock had a name on it and we had to read the names to know whose it was. Henry did an amazing job and can recognize many of his friend's names. We also put beads on the ribbons and Lauren and Aiden were both very proficient beaders. We acted like Leprechauns and had a great time pretending to hide our gold, make fairy shoes and sleep like little leprechauns. A HUMONGOUS thanks to Ms. Venus for all the help during the party. We couldn't have done it without you. It was also super fun to have Mr. Zach and little Ava there as well (that's the rest of Monica's family.) Ava was kind of a superstar at the party. The following potluck was awesome as well as delicious. Monica and her family brought green grapes and a super cute shamrock, rainbow cupcake cake. Kaden and his family brought yummy green sprinkley cupcakes and Natalie and her family brought delicious mini bagel pizza's. They had the cutest little shamrocks on them. We are so glad that Natalie's and Brodie's moms were able to hang out with us too. What a fun party!

St. Patrick's Day
|
Hello Twos families!
This week our class was on the lookout for leprechauns as we
celebrated St. Patrick's Day. The children tasted a bit of Ireland
and the British Isles by having a special snacktime "tea" with
chocolate chip scones on Thursday while wearing their own handmade
leprechaun hats! Special thanks to Mr. Danny, Ms. Nicole's husband,
and Ms. Rebecca for bringing and making a few delicious treats for
our tea! The children were able to construct leprechaun puppets as
well as create "shamrock" art to go along with their hats. We read
about the origins of St. Patrick's Day, why we wear green, and where
you can find a pot of gold. At the end of the week, everyone joined
together to make a giant "rainbow collage" out of many different types
of media-- ribbons, fabric, string, felt, etc... The result is just
as beautiful as a real rainbow, and I think our true "pot of gold" are
the children themselves! Come and take a look at all of the special
art if you can soon!
See you next week!

St. Patrick's Day/Pets

The luck of the Irish was all around us the week in our lovely and lucky Toddler class, with a great week, full of giggles and green! We kicked off our St. Patrick's Day focused week by focusing on the color GREEN! We read the book called Green where we found numerous things around us that are green, like frogs, grass, street lights and lots of veggies! But also, in connection to green is the day of the St. Patrick, and wee ones had a blast painting and coloring clovers, complete with silly faces and tons of green glitter! That's a lot of g's! We also made leprechaun hats for our little ones to sport!
But, alas, this week was not fully devoted to the Irish, but also to our dear pets we love and talk about! From cats to dogs, to fish and bunnies, we love them all! And boy, did our class sound like a pet shop when read our books on pets. We read some great books like Put Me in the Zoo, Cat Jumped In, I Like Myself and Hello, Puppy! Lucy M. was fabulous with her doggy and kitty sounds, where Jack belted out his rooster for all to hear! Also, this week we said hello to a pair of twins, Carson and Nolan, who came to visit us on Thursday and were as happy as could be for their first day! Thank you to Suzie (Zoi and Ellie's mom) for coming in and showing the class their dog. The kids were amazed with the big guy. Even our big boys (like Isaac and Jake) in class were impressed and a bit shy around him! Splendid job to our new friends, Ali, Lucy T. and Luke, each week you guys have done so well!!! And a big congrats to Jake for his great sharing skills with cars this week, you are doing so very well!!
Thank you Shannon (Aidan and Brodie's mom) for helping us on Thursday, the kids adored you; Caroline and Sadie were quite impressed with your yoga skills! Hope to have you again!
