We concentrated on more colors:  Azul-Blue, and Verde-Green.  PreK is coming along so quickly!!  Leah always sits right in front of Maestra Stacy and shouts the answers to questions super fast!  Logan knows all of his colors, and loves pointing things out in the classroom and saying the color to Maestra Stacy during the class.   The favorite project of the week was a directed drawing of "Boots" the Monkey from Dora the Explorer that is blue.  Fire Prevention  PK Writing Boards

Writing - The letters of the week are Pp and Ff. The class talked and learned
about words that start with our letters of the week. We read The Pigs' Picnic and the class also looked at a picture with many items that started with Pp and other items that did not.  They did such a great job picking out which items start with Pp. The class practiced writing the words, stop, drop and roll in their journals. Arianna has mastered her name incorporating lower case.  Ms Stacy and I see great progress in the children's writing as we look at their journals each week. Finally, the class is working on the writing strokes/shapes cross and moon.

Art -   The class worked on fiery art by using a marble rolled in yellow and red paint on a piece of construction paper.  Also the class made their own firefighter dog, it was cute they all named their dogs. The class is really working hard on cutting out different shapes and holding the scissors properly. They cut out different parts to a firefighter and dressed them, so they could be safe while fighting fires.  In Spanish Art, Cash did an amazing job during directed drawing!  He was so proud that he went around and showed everyone his accomplishment.

Social Studies - The class talked about what a fire escape plan is and why it is so important to have one at school and at home. As a class we talked about, what is safe to touch and play with, and what is not safe to play with. We also talked about why fire alarms will help save lives and why you should check them once a month to make sure they are working. Finally, the class discussed how firefighters stay safe, while talking about our field trip last week to the fire
station.

Math - The class counted apples while figuring out which numbers were missing as they counted to 20.  They also they classified objects/pictures according to color and shape. They compared groups of 1-6 of objects/groups and use correct vocabulary to describe the problem. Each day as we do calendar we use the date to practice math problems.  For example, today is the 15th, so we talk about and figure out math problems that equal 15.  They are getting so good at coming up with their
own problems without our help.

Music - The class learned "I am a Firefighter" sung to the tune "I'm a little teapot." They are also continuing to practice " Do you Know the Continents" and "Make new Friends." They are learning songs so fast and remembering them from week to week!!

Science - The class got to observe, Candle Extinguishing. Great way to show the
class how fire needs oxygen to stay lit.

Reading - Stop, Drop and Roll, Firefighter, Kindergarten Fire Brigade, Sleep
Owl, Mixed up, Chameleon Young, and Young Christopher Columbus.

Watching Dylan K. build with the Legos is so much fun.  He loves to show us his ships.

What do you call when there's a fire?  You... Call... 9 1 1 !!!  That is one of the things the preschoolers learned this week during their Fire Safety theme.  The kids had a great time driving firetrucks, climbing ladders and squirting water to put fires out all week.
We read some great books including FirefightersThe Fire Engine Book, and The Kindertown Volunteer Fire Brigade.  The kids really enjoyed anything with a firetruck in it.  Palmer really enjoyed The Kindertown Vounteer Fire Brigade.  Every time we had quiet reading time, that is what he chose.
There are lots of great fire safety songs and we really enjoyed them all.  We sang "Fire in Apartment 8", "Call 911", and "Hurry, hurry! Drive that fire truck!"  That was definitely a class favorite.  Andy asked if we could do it again and again.  I think he liked it.
In art, we made fire trucks out of rectangles and circles.  They turned out great.  The kids were told they could make a fire truck and were given the pieces.  It was so great to see how the kids put the pieces together to make their fire trucks.  Amelia requested a triangle to add to hers and so she received one.  It is so cool to see a child take a subject he has been learning about and see how he processes it into a tangible product.  Some of the children really showed attention to detail on this project.  Andy asked if he could make one when it was close to clean up time.  The conversation went like this...   Andy "Can I make one of those?"  Ms. Angie  "Sure!  Do you think you do it in 5 minutes?"  Andy "Maybe I'll wait to do it later."  Ms. Angie "How long do you think it will take you?"  Andy "I think it will take me about 40 minutes.  I can do it later."
Our letter of the week is F.  F for fire, flames, firetruck, firefighter...  We made Felt F's and Feather F's.  We also practiced our scissor skills, cutting our own foam stickers to make fabulous foam F's.  We also spent time being frogs, flamingos and flies.  Oh, you should see Mac's fly wings flap so fast and Kaelen's great frog hop.
In math, we counted and counted. We counted our fingers and our friends fingers.  We also counted fire fighters.  Ellie B. spent about ten minutes setting up firefighters and about ten seconds counting them.  (Seems like a lot of things in life doesn't it?!)  The kids did a great job and enjoyed playing with the firefighter figurines.
A great big welcome to our new friends Olivia and Willie.  We are very excited to have you both join our class.
FYI!  There are sign ups on the door for the pumpkin patch field trip (super fun! please go if you can)  and parent teacher conferences on the classroom door.  Please feel free to sign up for either.  We would love to have that time to get to know you and your family a little bit better!

Fire PreventionTwos Play Dough

This week we have begun a unit about Autumn.  We have been exploring how leaves change color and fall from trees.  Adam, Noah, Ava, Paige, Neve and Finley enjoyed making leaf rubbing pictures from freshly fallen leaves in our sensory table.  A highlight of our week was when Finley discovered a real live ladybug crawling on one or our sunflowers inside the sensory table!  Flynn, Riley and Hailey used our magnifying glasses to get a better look at our new "classmate."  We also explored the types of trees that lose their leaves, like apple trees!  Audrey and Clarie enjoyed painting apples for our classroom apple tree.  We also all pretended to be sunflower seeds and used water and sunlight to "grow."  Finally, we have been reading and singing about the change in season.  More about Autumn next week!

Autumn is here and that is exactly what we dove into this week; along side Fire Prevention Week.  We kicked off our Fall discovery by coloring fun fall leaves in seasonal colors of green, re, yellow and brown.  Brown is also our focus color for the week.  We made and colored brown bears and of course read, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You Hear?  We also, made fall wreaths with actual leaves!

Of course, this week wasn't all about Fall, but fire awareness as well.  We did hot firey finger painting and read books like, Stop, Drop & Roll, Firefighters A - Z, Here Come Our Firemen and Fire Trucks in Action.  Our letter this week was "E" and we decorated "E's" with extremely exciting elephants.  Claire also learned this week how to stop, drop and roll.  Claire will be graduating to another class soon.  It was a joy getting the time to work with her.  Not only is she an amazing student, but a terrific and loving child.  Welcome back Ms. Judy!

Hello Toddler Families!  Happy Fall!

Autumn is a fun time of the year with the leaves falling and all of their beautiful colors.

The art this week is about leaves and trees.

Monday we colored leaves and put them around the room.
Tuesday we had fun finger painting with red, yellow and orange.  Ami, Addison, Sadie, Claire, Brooklyn, Maren and Lucy had great fun painting with their hands.
Wednesday  we colored apples to put on our whimsical tree in colors of green, yellow and red.

This weeks music, we have been singing about "Leaves on the Tree" to the tune of "Wheels on the Bus" and "Falling Apples" to the tune of "London Bridge is Falling Down."

Our monthly goals:
1.  Learning to say each others names.
2.  Learning to share.  We say a little verse:
     (insert name) takes a turn
     (insert name) takes a turn
and we all share, share, share.

Brooklyn, Lucy and Maren played with a turtle and they were letting each other take a turn while having fun doing so.

Our letter this week is "E."  After we painted it brown, we decorated it with elephants.

It's great fun watching the little ones learn to share and knowing their new friends' names.  It's an incredible experience having the opportunity to learn and grow.  We love them all!

We also miss our buddies Isaac & Jack L-R.  Get well soon!!!

OCTOBER:
 "Fruits, Veggies, Eyes and Ears"
Can you use fruits and vegetables to create art? Sure, you can! We'll learn that complex forms can be created using simple shapes like apples and carrots! We'll look to Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimbolo for inspiration and create a portrait using items right from the garden.

"Kandinsky- Get Your Groove on and Make some Art!"
Learn about Russian-born painter and musician Wassily Kandinsky. We'll listen to music and create artwork that reflects how it makes us feel. Then, we'll put all of our creations together to create a single, vibrant piece of artwork to hang in the lounge at Play Boutique for everyone to enjoy!

"Seurat the dot!"
Tiny dots of pure color were what George Seurat used to create shape and pattern in his artwork. We'll use watercolors and q-tips to create our own pointillism masterpieces. Up close, they just look like a bunch of dots but, stand back and the magic is revealed!

"Mondrian's Window Blocks"
Piet Mondrian was known for his abstract color blocks of red, yellow and blue. We'll have fun using his techniques to make a 'stained glass' window pane to hang in the Play Boutique's art studio window for everyone to see. come...or, save them for unique and personal holiday gifts for that special someone. The last class will end with an open house art show to share our creations with friends and family.
