Fiesta

Cinco de Mayo: The holiday of Cinco de Mayo, The 5th of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not as many people think Mexico's Independence Day which is actually September 16.

As always, we enjoyed art.  We made a leaf rubbing, special Mother's Day project, and cute portraits of our moms.  Molly's portrait looked a lot like her mom!!

In Math we reviewed counting, used cubes for addition, and over and under.  We loved the worksheet where we did several activities at once.  They included cutting, pasting and placing the appropriate items over and under in an outdoor scene.  We are really working with the kids on following multiple instructions to complete a task.

Following our "Celebrating Mothers" theme we read Are You My Mother? Mama Cat and her Three Kittens, No Matter What, and A Mudpie for Mother.  The children loved A Mudpie for Mother and realizing there are many ways to show our love.  This story was about a piglet trying to find a gift for his mom and the different ways he went about it until his mission was complete.  There was alot of laughter!

Writing included our special Mothers' Day project.  We hope you enjoyed receiving it as much as the kids loved making it for you.  It was very fun to hear the childrens' answers to our questions!  We also worked on our letter of the week:  Rr & Mm.

We practiced our song for Mothers' Day all week for our performance at the Mothers' Day tea party.  We also worked on an obstacle course with over and under.  The kids really enjoy moving their bodies through the course and figuring out how to get from one end to the other quickly.

We had an amazing Cinco de Mayo that included a picnic complete with cheese quesadillas and cinnamon treats prepared by the kids and cooked by Ms. Lindsi.  We also enjoyed chips and salsa and cupcakes.  Quite a treat!

Parents - Just a reminder, please do not allow your children to bring toys into the classroom. We have lost a very special toy of Sikha's and it has not turned up yet. If you see a black and white zhu, zhu pet please return it to Erica, Sikha's mom.

We love our moms SO much.  This week's "Celebrating Mothers" theme was full of sweet sentiments and beautiful smiles as we talked about our mothers and other important women in our lives.
We read stories like My Mother is a Firefighter, I Can Dress Myself and No Hugs 'till Sunday.  We sang "the mommy song" and learned to spell mommy.  Monica really enjoys "the mommy song" because we clap.  Monica likes to clap.
Beautiful art projects were made this week.  The portraits of our moms are so fantastic.  We closed our eyes and thought about what our moms look like.  Tegan's smile as he imagined his mom's face was heartwarming.  Then we used markers and crayons to draw our mothers.  Lou, Ashton and Monica all included other family members and Bodie decided he definitely wanted to draw an airport instead.  That's how art is sometimes.
The letter of the week was i. We painted with ice cubes, played with insects and used our imaginations.  L.J. has an incredible imagination.  Since we have done every letter at least once, we have been doing many letter recognition games.  Many of the kids know most or all of the letters.  WOWZA!  Smart kids!
On Wednesday, we had a fiesta to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!  We added straw sombreros to the house area.  Who knew that giving straw hats to children was the same as giving them triple esspresso shots?!!!  I didn't, but it is and instant dancing and partying broke out!  Dylan Masuda does the best hat dance.  Palmer, being the ever caring boy he is, kept asking the teachers "Would you like to wear this after me?"  You are a thoughtful guy, Palmer.  We also read a story about Cinco de Mayo, did sombrero art and ate chips and salsa.  Pearl tried salsa and liked it except "not the vegetables."

Thank you Brodie for the delicious banana-blueberry bread and also for the new class pet- a Venus Fly-Trap.  The kids are think it is super interesting.  We have not named it yet but we will.
Thank you also to all the  wonderful mommies, grandmas, aunties, and other women who love and care for all the children in our class.

This week we celebrated someone very, VERY special in class.  Someone we love, who is always there for us no matter what we do and how we act, our mothers.  This week was all about our wonderful mommies and why all of us love them so.  On Monday the class made cards for their mom's and inside the cards they shared why they loved their mom so much.  Our little Mason said he loved his mom "because of his baby sister Zoe," while Mac loved his mom for "reading and watching DVDs" with him.  Each card was very thoughtful and sincere.  It was adorable how they love their moms.  On Tuesday we celebrated May by making May baskets filled with flowers of all sorts colors.  Wednesday we celebrated Cinco de Mayo and made Spanish bracelets out of lentils, paint, glue, gems and cut up toilet paper rolls.  Thursday and Friday we continued with our tribute to mothers and made heart handprints joined with a sweet poem about leaving "prints" in their mother's lives that won't ever rub off.  We also printed out some of the numerous photos we have of Toddlers and gave them to the mothers.  It was amazing to see these old pictures taken in the fall and then to see how much the kids have grown!!!  This week we read I Love You Mommy, I Love You Because You're You and Guess How Much I Love You.  All of which were stories about caring mom's and their gentle hearts and tolerance for their rascally children.  We wish all the Toddler Family Mom's a Happy Mother's Day!  Thank you for sharing your greatest gifts with us, your children.
