 Sorting PracticePlants & Seeds

This week in Pre-K we learned about Plants and Seeds.

Star Student - Taylor
In Art we made really cute popsicle letter trees, a seed collage, and beautiful sunflower pictures, while labeling each part of the flower. Kennedy and Sikha loved how pretty their sunflower picture turned out. We had so much fun learning about all of the different art we can create with different textures such as plants and seeds.

In Writing we practiced our letters of the week: Ss & Gg.  We had fun searching the classroom for items that begin with these letters.  Alex, Rowan and Leah love this part of class! Arianna found a great Ss word, "snap!"

Our Science project was to create tornados in a bottle.  Be sure to ask your children how we made them as they participated in the process. The effect was awesome!  Our pea pods have begun to sprout!  The kids get to take turns watering and they love to observe how much their own plant has grown.  We also spoke a lot about our new class pet, Rosie.  She is a Leopard Gecko.  Some gecko facts:  she does not bite, she is only handled by teachers, eats meal worms, sheds her skin approximately every 4 weeks, must be kept between 85-95 degrees and is found in India and Pakistan.  She is amazingly friendly and curious with the children.  They were able to pet her for the first time on Monday.  Olive was surprised to find she is "soft and cuddly."

We studied the numbers 11-15 this week and made a thumbprint painting complete with shapes to show the numbers.  We also worked with popsicle sticks to create shapes.

Music was a lot of fun as we are working on a special song.  We will perform it for all of you next Thursday afternoon, so be sure to mark May 6th on your calendar. The children are very excited.  Several of them already knew the song, so it made learning it a lot easier for everyone.

Reading time is always a highlight, the books we read were, The Tiny Seed, Big Words for Little People, The Giving Tree, What You do is Easy, What I do is Hard, & Messy Bessy's Garden.  We continue to include books not only about our theme for the week, but also ones that are relevant to school manners.

"Plants and Seeds" has been this week's theme and we have learned so much!

We have read The Little Flower Seed, Seed to Plant, and the very informative How a Seed Grows.  We also read Flip, Float, Fly-Seeds on the Move and learned how seeds can travel from place to place.  After reading all of these great stories about seeds growing into different kinds of plants it was a lot of fun to pretend to be a seed.  We were planted and watered.  The sun came.  First we grew our roots down and then our stems grew up.  We had leaves and some of us had flowers too.  We also enjoyed pretending to plant seeds in pots and in the garden.  Lou planted a carrot seed and Dylan K. planted a dandelion.  Andy really enjoyed the pretend garden we grew.  Acting out stories is a great way to learn and retain the information we learned in the story.  It's also a lot of fun!
We planted bean seeds and more grass this week.  It has been fun watching our grass grow.  It is growing longer and more seeds are sprouting.  We are also learning how to take care of those new fragile plants.  We have also looked at different kinds of seeds and seed pods.  It is interesting to see how different seeds look.  It has been great to dig, scoop, pour and feel birdseed.  We are going to plant some of that too.  Hmmmm.  I wonder if we will grow a bird?
We have been practicing counting flowers and writing numbers.  Kristin is great at writing.
Hip, hip, hooray!  H is our letter this week.  Our buddy Harris begins with H!  We made h's covered in hearts.  We played hop for h!  We also hugged our friends.  So sweet and cute- all the love in our room!

Two birthdays this week!  Jackson is 3!  He is such a smartie.  I can't wait to see everything he learns while he is 3!!!  Soleil is 4!  She is so proud of being 4!  She tells us everyday.  "I'm bigger"  and reaches up and touches teachers' shoulders because that is what bigger girls do!  Sos, you are bigger!  Keep reaching for the stars, Baby!

All was a bloom this week in our Toddler class. from painting tulips, to planting our very own daisies and bush bean seeds in soil, the little ones had fun pretending their cups of soil were cups of chocolate.  We not only touched and felt a variety of seeds and dirt, but we also smelt some lovely scents.  Every child made their own little bundles of potpourri.  They crushed up a variety of lavender scented plants and then we tied them into netting and tied it together with a cute ribbon of their choosing.  We also painted and cut out busy bess for our class garden we have made.  The busy bees are also accompanied by a full grown garden, full of grass everyone cut out and flowers the kids made out of green painted popsicle sticks and felt flower.  Following the monthly theme we created a feel and match texture board.  The kids have had a grand time feeling the various textures and matching texture pieces.  Also, for the week of plants and seeds we re-read Planting a Rainbow and the Tales of Peter Rabbit.  Also we learned a new poem entitled, "My Spring Garden."
