Frogs a Dancing in Pre KFrogs & Birds

Wow! Pre K had an awesome week! We love being teachers at Peake Academy.:)

This week in Creative Art we made a bird & bird habitat collecting bag, puppet frogs with really "super" long tongues as Dillon, Alex, Rowan and Taj would say! We also made bird feeders with pinecones, bird seeds and almond butter. Kennedy and Aidan liked licking their fingers afterward! Finally, we made great bird nests with all of our habitat collecting on our field trip.

In Science we observed / listened for birds in their habitat on our nature walk field trip! The children listened so well and made the field trip a breeze!! They loved collecting and when we were finished we headed to the lake to feed the ducks bread. A big thank you to the parents that helped make the field trip possible. You are appreciated.

In Math we went on a shape hunt in our classroom. We practiced sorting buttons by color, counting the right amount of pennies and putting them in the correct numbered jar. We also sorted decks of cards by colors and suits.  Ms. Stacy's husband and son made rubber band boards for the class and the kids love them.

In Writing we wrote and illustrated a rhyming book. We practiced words that rhyme with hat. Then illustrated a picture that connected to the word. They all worked so hard on their books. The class is getting so good at blending sounds together:)

Music consisted of shooting frisbees through hula hoops, free dance to music and balancing on the beam.

Reading is always fun as we share books based on our theme of the week. We read Froggy Learns to Swim, The Greatest Gift, Robin's Nest, and Frog and Toad.  We always take the time to discuss the story and tie in a lesson that is relevant to the day's activities.

Frogs and Birds and Kids, OH MY!  What a fun week it's been. We have loved talking and learning about "Frogs and Birds" this week and we have loved all of the jumping, leaping and hopping that goes along with it.  We have read great books like The Big Wide Mouthed Frog, The Teeny Tiny Tadpole, and Are You my Mother?  Kristin brought in a very funny book called The Hungry Frog and all of the kids laughed when the frog wiggled his eyes and his tummy glowed from eating a firefly.  Thanks for sharing with us, K!
In art, we made beautiful feathery birds and cute "bowl" frogs (get it? hee hee). We sang "Five Green and speckled Frogs" and made speckled frog puppets too. The kids enjoyed making their puppet frogs hop around. Ashleigh named hers Banana because it like to eat bananas.
For science this week, the kids got to see a real birdnest that Dylan M. brought to school last year. It has held up very well and it is amazing to see what a bird can do with plant parts, dirt and feathers. We made our own bird nests with paper bags, nature objects, glue and a bit of easter grass and packaging paper. They are not the same as the bird's nest but they are pretty impressive none the less. We also made a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting what we know about birds and frogs.
For math, we counted feathers, put eggs together- number halves matching dot halves and added and subtracted frogs.
Since both frogs and birds lay eggs. We also added plastic eggs to the dramatic play area. Dylan M. was busy coloring eggs while Soleil and Grace were hiding and finding them. Dylan K. did cook one in the microwave for me. Very yummy.
Our letter, this week was f. F is for frog, food, fruit, flowers and fabric. We drew on fabric for art (Thanks to all the fabulous fabric donating folks!) and we made fabric f's. F is also for fun, so we made sure to have plenty of that!

Thank you Ryland for the fun fruit cookies for our f week snack! So yummy and thoughtful!

Monica is a big sister now! Mommy and baby Ava are doing well. Monica said "Baby Ava is So Tiny" and she showed us by holding her fingers about an inch apart. Monica you are so funny and we are so excited for you!

This week was Ms. Claudia's birthday! Palmer says she's 3 now. Happy Birthday and Welcome back Ms. Claudia! We missed you!

TWEET! RIBBIT!  That's right, this week was all about to frogs and birds in our Toddler Class!  From bird feeders covered in seeds to feather decorated binoculars for bird watching, we had a blast taking on the challenge of acting like frogs and caring for our neighborhood birds.  We also made frog puppets, red velvet Robins, bird's nest with eggs and colored toads!  We had a hoppin' time!  We read a great collection of books on both these creatures: Six Crows, Jump Frog, Jump, Too Many Frogs! Fribbity ribbit, The Baby Beebee Bird and various books to brush up on shapes.  All the children are now professional at spotting shapes in everything they see in our class.  From a slice of watermelon (triangle) to eggs (ovals), we are quite proud of each and every one of the.  All of us in class would like to thank Soleil and Taj and their family for the new puzzles and car mats.  The puzzles were a huge hit with all of them!!  Also, Ms Judy and Ms Courtney have posted a wish list for the class of items the kids can't seem to get enough of in play and/or in art.  We posted it on the front of our little gate if you'd like to sneak a peek.  We were happy to have our friend Finley back from vacation, everyone missed his happy face and energetic personality and we hope to see our other friends soon that couldn't make class this week!  We miss you!!!
