 Wizers Field TripNutrition

This week we talked about nutrition and how to balance our meals.

In math we worked on counting our food servings for the 5 food groups. Then we worked on adding and subtracting fruits, veggies, grains, dairy, meats and sweets.

In art we made a food pyrimid, we decorated a kids cookbook, and we practiced how to balance our meals by choosing what to eat at each time of the day. Finally, we made food art, which was yogurt, raspberries, and bananas. The kids loved following the recipe! Dillon and Taylor loved the yogurt, they licked the bowls clean!!!

In music we sang the MILK song, to the tune of B-I-N-G-O. The kids thought that was funny song.

In reading we read, Stone Soup, Cranberries, Picking Apples, and Peanut Butter & Jelly

We went on a mini field trip to Wizers Grocery Store. It was so cute how excited all the kids were. Molly helped lead the way, since she was the star student. Taj and Sean loved talking about all the different foods we showed to the class. It really was neat to let the kids see all the different foods and have them tell us what food group each item goes in. Hands on is such an amazing way to learn.

Our letters of the week were A & V. It was neat to show the kids that V is an upside down A. Aidan and Rowan really thought that was a great discovery. We are so excited, as teachers, to watch our students improve each day on their handwriting. Each child is so thrilled when they can accomplish writing a new letter each week.

This week, the Preschool class has been learning about Nutrition.  We have been talking about healthy foods we like to eat and what makes them healthy.  We read Hi Pizza Man, On Top of Spaghetti and Tomatoes to Ketchup.  We sang songs like "I like to eat apples and bananas," "Noodles from scratch," and "Do you know the muffin man?"

We played pizza shop.  Did you know that 1 out of every 5 preschoolers like macaroni and cheese on their pizza?  We played "chef" and did a lot of great healthy cooking.  We made menu's.  Ollie's menu includes eggs and Cheetos. At Ashton's restaurant, Mooseum, you can order noodles and it will only cost you "5 money" but eggs will cost you "10 money."

We painted with kitchen utensils and made noodle pictures this week in art.  We also made some cookbooks.  The kids chose magazine pictures of foods they wanted to include in their cookbook.  Then they told the teacher what the food was called and how to make it.  Rory has written a recipe for "A Salad" that I know you will all be wanting to make for a meal soon!  The ingredients are bread, soup and bananas.  Then to make it you "mix it".  I might have that tonight.  I already have everything I need!

We had a very noodley week.  We read books and sang songs about noodles.  We talked about what we like to eat on our noodles.  Many of the kids like sauce on their noodles.  We played with pad thai, linguini and spaghetti noodles in the sensory table.  We also made some chinese bean strand noodles.  While we heated the water for cooking the noodles, we felt the noodles raw.  Then after they cooked and cooled down we felt the noodles cooked.  The felt very different then they had.  So much fun to squish and touch.  We also practiced a wet noodle dance!
Our letter this week is K!  K for Kristin (sometimes we even call Kristin "K"!  K is also for Kaden!  K for kitten, ketchup and key!  We also ate some Kiwi because kiwi starts with k!
Happy Birthday to Haris!  He's 3 now!
Many thanks to Wizer's Grocery Store for letting us take a tour to see all of the healthy foods they sell.  Especially to Mr. Jesse who talked to us about how important and healthy the produce section is.

NutritionToddler Cookie Painting

Mmmm..lots was cookin' for our Toddler class.  From painting cookies with food coloring to creating various shapes in cheese slices.  The students and their parents are coming together to share their favorite recipes so we can have our Class Cookbook ready for next month..just in time for the holidays!!  We also enjoyed some delicious birthday cupcakes brought in by Mason and his parents.  Mason turned TWO on Wednesday and was very excited to share it with his classmates.  Also this week we read, "Green Eggs and Ham," "Peter Rabbit: MUNCH," and "The Red Apple."  We also welcomed two new faces this week, Hailey and Gavin.  We hope to see them again very soon!

"Set the table."

Each classroom has put together items to create one full Thanksgiving dinner for 3 families at the Raphael House of Portland.  You can view the tables by the front desk filled with items to help us "set the table."  This has been an amazing opportunity to teach our children the value of sharing and giving.  There is still time to contribute.  Items will need to be in by end of day, Mon 23rd.
Please stop by the front desk for more information.
Thank you to Taj and Soleil's mom, Erin for organizing this amazing charity event.
