Pre-Kindergarten with Ms. Lindsi & Ms. Danaye
 PreK 5 Senses5 Senses

This week we learned about our 5 senses:  seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching!  We made texture paintings and texture books (touching) and scratch & sniff books (smelling).  We also made rockstar sunglasses (seeing) to remind us to wear shades in the sun so we can protect our eyes and preserve our sense of seeing!  We also played sound BINGO (hearing) and tasted different foods (tasting) so we know the difference between sweet, salty, sour, and bitter foods.

In math we continued to work on writing our numbers 1-10. We also had a tasty jellybean math day so we could use our sense of taste while learning math!

The letters of the week were "Ss" for senses, seeing, and smelling, and "Tt" for touching and tasting.  We all practiced the sounds these letters make and writing them, too.  Miss Lindsi's writing group even wrote the words of the 5 senses!

In reading we read Me and My Senses, What I Like About Me, Curious Kittens: A Book About Colors, My Five Senses, and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse.

And our star student this week was... drumroll please... Sikha!!!

This week, we explored our five senses.  We read books such as My Senses and My Five Senses by Aliki.
To explore our sense of touch, we made texture collages.  We used things that felt soft like yarn (Pearl named her yarn 'nakie after her pet rubber snake), scratchy like sandpaper and bumpy like corrugated cardboard.  We also drew on sandpaper with crayons.  Ellie used a lot of colors.  It feels different to draw on a scratchy surface than a smooth surface like paper.
When talking about our sense of hearing, we took some time to be SO quiet so we could hear the sounds of our school all around us.  We could hear children in the toddler room playing and some grownups talking and when it was super quiet we could hear the air in the vents.  (It's hard to imagine so many wonderful 2, 3, and 4 year olds being SO quiet, isn't it?!)
To talk about our sense of sight, we talked about how many things that we can see, we can also touch or hear or smell.  Then we read a story about something that we can only see.  We read "It Looked Like Spilt Milk."  It is about a cloud!  Then we painted cloud pictures of our own using paint, shaving cream and glue all mixed up.  We made our own beautiful cloud pictures!
At snack time, we took the opportunity to talk about taste.  We had salty crackers and sweet fruit snacks.  Yum, Yum!
When we talked about our sense of smell, we did something so silly.  We smelled our friends!!! Hee, hee, hee.  It turned into a silly game of a lot of P.U.ing followed by much giggling.  So that was a silly success!  We also made some "smelly paints" out of grape drink mix and water.  Neil said his paints smelled "like black" and Soleil's paints smelled "like a hot dog!"
Our letter this week is D.  We made dotty D's, dot pictures and dotted dogs.  The kids loved using Bingo marking pens for dot making.  We sang the Daddy Song (3 d's in daddy), read Hide and Seek, Duck, duckwalked (Dylan K. has a great duck walk) and danced (Thanks Bodie for showing us all those great moves!)  So many fun activities to learn about the letter D.  And we can't forget that we have two Dylans in class and their names both start with D!  We love our Dylans!  What a great first month of school we've had!
