April 2012

Greetings!

Back when I drove 35+ minutes each way to work I listened to a lot of talk radio -- and a lot of direct response commercials.    A decade later, the opening copy for "Hooked on Phonics" still rings in my head: "People judge you by the words you use."

That's extremely true in peer-to-peer fundraising where the difference between success and failure can depend on the subject line of an email or the wording of an appeal.

Katya Andresen's recent blog post "The five words that made women give 20% more" dramatically illustrates this point.

I assume -- always dangerous -- that most major programs are testing their copy.   For those of you who are not yet testing copy, it's relatively easy and inexpensive to try.  To get started, consider these simple approaches.

"Focusing to Support Fundraising Participants": Free Teleconference on 4/25
sponsored by Blackbaud

April 25, 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm EST

Recent studies by Blackbaud and the Run Walk Ride Fundraising Council show that participants views taking part and fundraising for an event as two separate tasks.

In this teleconference, Blackbaud's Amy Braiterman and Amy Boulas of the National MS Society focus on the art of supporting fundraising participants.   This dynamic duo will shed light on how to mine your data to uncover who your fundraisers are vs. those who simply want to show their support by being at the event.   Then they'll discuss tactics to help the fundraisers reach and exceed their goals.

From Event Production to Experience Curation Event 360 logo

In our increasingly digital world, people are hungry for human interaction which could mean increased interest in thon fundraising events, according to a blog post by Event 360's Sarah Coniglio and Patrick Riley.

At the same time, Coniglio and Riley say "people want to maximize their face-to-face experiences and don't want to deal with small inconveniences that distract from the event."

Creating programs that more successfully satisfy participants requires a shift in mindset from event production to experience curation.
