October 2011

Greetings!

With the 2011 event season coming to an end, our thoughts turn to the question:  "How can I work smarter and achieve more in 2012 in spite of the lousy economy?"

That's the focus of the March 2012 Run Walk Ride Fundraising Conference, which is now open for registration.

Two new workshops hone in on issues critical to increasing revenue.   "Creating Great Fundraising Coaches" will show you how to train your staff and volunteers to coach participants to reach new fundraising heights.   "Integrated Marketing" will help you reap a higher marketing ROI by coordinating online and offline efforts.

The Endurance Summit will feature insights from leaders at the LIVESTRONG Foundation, American Cancer Society, ASPCA and our special guest, Richard Hulnick, head of the New York Road Runners' ING New York City Marathon charity program.

Hot topics on the main conference day include fundraising strategy, sponsorship sales, volunteer management and better program branding.   We'll unveil new benchmarking and participant attitude research.  And our great faculty includes speakers from the Alzheimer's Association, the Challenged Athletes Foundation, the March of Dimes and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to name a few.

Hope you'll join us for all of that business-building content plus numerous opportunities to network, the Pacesetter and Cash, Sweat & Tears Awards  (entry deadlines: December 15) and much more in Atlanta.

MS Society is Leader in Raising Funds via Social Media: Chronicle of Philanthropy

A recent Chronicle of Philanthropy survey of 150 nonprofits found that just over half were raising money though social media and only one reported raising big bucks: the National Multiple Sclerosis Society which brought in more than $4 million.

Graham McReynolds, the society's EVP for marketing and development, attributed those results to two primary factors:

1) A major investment in staff training and tools to help them develop social media skills

2) A "concentrated effort to incorporate social networks into the group's well-established fundraising events such as Bike MS and Walk MS."

Three Paths to More Repeat Participants
One in a series of tips sponsored by Blackbaud
 Amy Blog

Industry statistics show that most events only manage to woo back 40% of participants.   Blackbaud's Kathryn Hall recently shared three strategies that will help increase your percentage of repeaters:

1) Create a compelling experience at the event that creates an emotional bond

2) Communicate your appreciation and the impact of the participant's efforts all year long

3) Double up on the love you shower upon team captains to make sure they return and bring their teams with them
