Simple Steps Can Raise Your ROI
Greetings!

New strategies like social media and mobile marketing receive so much attention these days that one could easily be distracted from focusing on the workhorse of online fundraising: email.

Don't.

One relatively simple new email marketing tactic raised nearly $200,000 for the Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run/Walk in 2010, according to Director of Core Events Sara Orrell.

Sara and her team were frustrated by the high percentage of participants who never even visited their customized online fundraising home pages, let alone use them to generate emails.    Perhaps supporters were intimidated by the technology or felt it would eat up too much time.Jingle Bell Run Walk

"We wanted to give them a tool that would make it very easy to start fundraising right away," Sara explained.   "Based on the number of jokes we all receive online, we knew that people knew how to forward emails."

This year, as soon as people registered to participate, they received a personalized, trackable fundraising email that they could simply forward from their email account to anyone in their address book.

The results:  Forwarded emails yielded $192,123 in revenue, 88% in the form of donations and 12% in registration fees.    Programming costs to generate this six-figure bounty: Less than $3,000.

That's what I call ROI.

Controversy in Boston: Are Charities Receiving Too Many Marathon Spots?

Will the Boston Marathon reduce the number of entries it grants to fundraising charities to make room for more qualifying runners?

That question was at the heart of a recent Boston Globe article that aired criticism by qualifying runners shut out of the world-famous race.   When online registration for qualifiers opened on October 18, a virtual mad scramble ensued and all of the bibs were taken within 8 hours.Boston Marathon

Nonprofits have raised more than $130 million since the Boston Athletic Association began granting charity entries in 1989.  Of the nearly 27,000 slots in 2010, about 21% were provided to nonqualifiers via charities, tour companies and people with connections.  About 8% went to charities.

In light of the criticism, the BAA is "looking at ways to make the process more efficient and equitable," a BAA executive told the Globe.

We'll be watching to see if that means fewer bibs for charities.

Become more data driven. The culling, organizing, and assessment of your event data is where the real work happens, and where the real insights emerge. Whether through classification, clustering, or regression, the goal is to make sense of what the data is telling you.

The data is always telling you something - although occasionally, it may be telling you that it doesn't have enough to go on. Bottom line: the tracking, mining, and analysis of data should be central to your 2011 event fundraising strategy. It is impossible to run a successful event fundraising program without understanding the characteristics of your participants and the linkages between those characteristics and giving.
