Be Careful What You Wish For....

Greetings!

Scoring entry slots into the ING New York City Marathon has long been considered the golden ticket to big bucks by endurance fundraising leaders.

The coveted entries can still generate terrific returns, but a recent article in The New York Times made public what many program directors have been talking about: Some charities are failing to find runners for all the spots they've had to pay for in advance.

For example, New York-based Team Continuum, a cancer patient support group, was stuck with 50 out of the nearly 300 entries it requested.  The group's chief operating officer told the Times she blamed that on the economy.

Properly forecasting how many entries to request and purchase from events that charge substantial fees will be one of the hot topics at the Endurance Fundraising Summit on March 1.

Registration for the entire Run Walk Ride Fundraising Conference is now open -- hope you'll join us!

New Program Round-up
One sign of thon fundraising's continued vitality is the emergence of new programs.  Launches on our radar screen include:

The National Wildlife Federation's Hike & Seek, a cross between a nature hike and scavenger hunt aimed at bringing family and friends together in the great outdoors while raising money for NWF.   Working with Event 360, NWF piloted the program in Chicago, Seattle and Washington, DC this fall.

The first Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism will take place on January 29 in SunLife Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is expanding its Race for the Cure series overseas.  Its first race in Jerusalem took place on October 28.  Its first race in the Bahamas is slated for January 15 in conjunction with a Komen mission to the island nation.

Did you launch a thon fundraising program in 2010 or have expansion plans for 2011?   Send your news to info@runwalkride.com
Is Your Tagline Getting The Job Done?dollar out of hat

We were thrilled to learn that our friends at the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research won a 2010 Getting Attention Nonprofit Tagline Award.

Hirshberg took the top prize in the special events category for "Little Feet. Big Strides." the tagline for their Kids Can Cure Fun Run.

The judges commented:

"This tagline is extremely engaging and visual. It fosters an emotional connection by declaring that small children can make a difference, while highlighting the direct impact that those who run it have on the cause."

If your organization hasn't focused on its taglines, you're not alone: 72% of nonprofits report that they don't have a tagline or rate theirs as performing poorly, according to GettingAttention.org, sponsor of the tagline competition.
