Should you add Twitter to the mix?
Some early analysis of 40 Thon programs that integrated Twitter into their online fundraising comes to us from Blackbaud VP of of Product Development Ian Gruber. His top findings:
-- Twitter is so hot now that it is being adopted very quickly (compared to the rate at which users adopted other Blackbaud add-ons.)
-- Tweets reach a lot of people. Because they don't want to be accused of spamming, few participants send out emails to their entire address book. (The average participant sends out 23.5 emails.) In contrast, the average Twitter user has 70 followers.
-- The data set is too small to draw strong conclusions on response, but Gruber senses that Twitter is definitely viable as a fundraising medium and that thon managers should explore providing participants with sample tweet copy and other guidance.

Creating a virtual Twitter event
Instead of adding Twitter as a fundraising tool for an existing event, Athletes for a Cure recently produced the first running event held entirely on Twitter.
More than 600 competitors raised money in the Tweet5k to fight prostate cancer by agreeing to run a measured 5k course and report their results on an honor system via Twitter. |
