RUN WALK RIDE SUCCESS
September 2008

Greetings!

GOOD NEWS: A recent study reveals people are far more apt to give when asked than we assume and that volunteers usually underestimate how much they'll contribute.

For example, researchers asked Team in Training participants to estimate how many people they'd have to solicit to reach their donation goals.

After the event, it was found that volunteers had predicted "they would have to approach 50 percent more people than were actually needed. Moreover, they underestimated the average donation they'd receive by $17," according to a write-up of the study by the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Why?  Fundraisers underestimate the power of the social pressure potential donors feel to be benevolent.  They don't want to "look bad" in their own eyes or in the eyes of others.

Further research indicated that fundraisers are far more successful when they ask directly for donations than they  are if they are subtle.  The difference between asking for the donation and handing someone a flyer that says "please give" can be huge.

Keep that data handy the next time you have to coach reluctant fundraisers!

It's Time You Won an Award!Pacesetter logo
We think that athletic event fundraisers who rally millions of people to raise billions of dollars deserve some recognition.

That's why we're pleased to announce the launch of our Run Walk Ride Pacesetter Awards.  Winners in six competitive categories (Best Brochure, Best Print Creative, Best T-Shirt, for example) will be honored with trophies at the RWR conference and will have their work profiled in The NonProfit Times.

The entry deadline is November 19, so please visit www.rwrawards.com right away to learn how to get involved.
Audi Best Buddies Challenge Grows
Thanks to the support of its title sponsor, Best Buddies International is one of those rare nonprofits able to say that 100% of the funds raised by participants in its athletic event fundraising program directly benefit its programs.

This year the organization's bike rides on Cape Cod and in Southern California attracted a record number of participants who raised more than $6.5 million.

Why does Audi invest a reported $2.5 million on the sponsorship?  Audi of America's Western Region director, Michael Cagle, told the LA Times that the Best Buddies program "is a rare find as a promotional partner. 'How can you go wrong? It's a great cause, chaired by California's first lady, a wealthy niche community of cyclists, Hollywood celebrities and an aspirational brand like Audi -- it hits on all cylinders.'"
