RUN WALK RIDE SUCCESS
June 2008

Greetings!

Like the ocean, the athletic event fundraising field is populated by everything from whales to minnows.

If you are thinking about developing a new program for your organization, creating a leviathan (like Race for the Cure or the Walk to Cure Diabetes) would require massive resources.  The barriers for entry are much lower for a marathon training program.

How low?  Check out the new training program called Miles for Melanoma  being run by a pair of volunteers (a survivor and his wife) for the Melanoma Research Foundation.   Their launch goal: 20 people raising $2,200 each at the Philadelphia Marathon and upwards from there.

Once established these programs can raise hundreds of thousands and millions for charity.  That's why they'll be a major focus of our 2009 conference.

Academic News You Can Use:
Fundraising Easier As Goal Nears
Approaching the finish line
Our Academic Advisor, Michal Ann Strahilevitz of Golden Gate University, shares news of an exciting study: Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that donations increase as charities move closer to their goals.

The study authors hypothesize that this occurs because efforts at the end of a fundraising process feel more substantial.

Adapting the findings for athletic event fundraisers, Strahilevitz offers two suggestions:

1) Divide large fundraising goals into smaller pieces.  For example, at the outset, a runner who wants to raise $5,000 might emphasize that she is well on her way to raising her first $1,000.

2) Keep individual fundraisers motivated by letting them know that fundraising generally gets easier the closer they get to their goals.

SchwinnTNT Announces Product Partners
Continuing to renew and expand its 20-year-old Team in Training program, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has launched a "Product Partners" program, a new category of corporate relationship, in which companies create a special co-branded product or promotion for TNT, with a portion of the proceeds coming back to LLS.

Kicking off the program are bike rack manufacturer Saris, timing system marketer ChampionChip and Fuel Belt, a leader in running accessories.

LLS also announced its first partnership with a bike manufacturer.  Schwinn has agreed to support Team In Training from 2008-2010 as a supporting sponsor with cash sponsorship, product donations, participant education, and tremendous marketing and promotional support.  A TNT cobranded bike will launch in the fall.

Blackbaud logoConsolidation: Blackbaud Buys Kintera
