RUN WALK RIDE SUCCESS
April 2008

Greetings!

Although we usually focus on making incremental improvements, sometimes athletic event fundraisers need to look tackle big issues. For example, should you create new and different events or drop weak programs?

In this issue, we share two concepts to consider:
  1. an event series that takes place at a corporate location (instead of on city streets)
  2. a company-sponsored fundraising program that could enable your organization to leverage the Ironman market.
Along those lines, on June 19, our next teleconference will explore the "ups and downs" of skyscraper stairclimbing, a category with great potential in many metro markets.  Click here to learn more and register (the session is free to paid RWRFC members)

Six Flags' New Walk in the Park SeriesSix Flags logo
How'd you like to launch a 12-location walk series without having to obtain government approvals to take over city streets?

Cure Kids Cancer is in the enviable position of being the beneficiary of "A Walk in the Park", a walk-a-thon that will take place at 12 Six Flags locations on September 6/7.

The program is an initiative of Six Flags Friends, the amusement park giant's community outreach arm, and Cure Kids Cancer, a division of the Children's Miracle Network.

Any Ironmen Among Your Supporters?
Relay for life photo
Since 2001 an Ironman fundraising program sponsored by Janus Capital Group has helped participants raise more than $26 million for the charities of their choice.

In addition to providing athletes with online tools, Janus makes corporate donations ranging from $10,000 to $750 to the top 50 fundraisers at each of the eight races in the series.  In 2007, the #1 participant brought in more than $1.8 million for the Matthew Larson Foundation for Pediatric Brain Tumor Research.

 "
Ironman is proud to be associated with the Janus Charity Challenge," said Ironman Corporation's President and CEO, Ben Fertic. "Janus simplifies the process, making it easier for athletes to integrate charitable work into their Ironman training programs."

Atlanta is home to the American Cancer Society, organizer of Relay for Life, the country's largest athletic event fundraising series.

That inspired Atlanta-Journal Constitution reporter Christopher Quinn to pen an article on the Relay for Life and explore the world of athletic event fundraising.
