RUN WALK RIDE SUCCESS
November 2007

Greetings!

I've spent weeks now interviewing experts, talking to veterans of our May meeting and introducing hundreds of people to the Run Walk Ride Fundraising Council.

Most think it's a great idea to provide athletic event fundraisers with opportunities to share best practices, but I'll confess there are a few suspicious souls out there wondering if I have an ulterior motive.

I'm no angel, but I am sincere in creating this mission-driven business.  Here's the fundamental idea.  By providing you with practical information and opportunities to network, I believe you'll be able to work even smarter and generate more resources for important causes.

Ready, set, read on!

The Thon Menace
No one takes the subject of athletic event fundraising more seriously than me, but I had to laugh at this outrageous report on The Daily Show featuring The Walk for Hunger.

Marathon Charity Programs GrowTeam World Vision
While the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the undisputed leader in this field, numerous groups are engaging supporters to raise funds at one or more marathons.  To name a few:

Team WorldVision, for example, recruited 500 runners who raised $500,000 at the Chicago Marathon.  Team Hole in the Wallwill once again be at the ING New York Marathon in November and is adding new events.  And the American Cancer Society's Charity Runner program is expanding.

Are You Ready for Extreme Conditions?Temperatures in the 80s led to numerous cases of overheating, thousands of "no shows" and an early end to the Chicago Marathon.

It was a harsh reminder to all event organizers that they must make contingency plans to anticipate all sorts of emergencies.  This is particularly challenging for "mega" events according to running industry expert Don Allison in this article on active.com

This is sure to be a "hot" topic (sorry) at the Run Walk Ride Fundraising conference.

Our Hearts Go Out to the Challenged Athletes Foundation and all San Diegochallenged athlete
On September 22 a fire destroyed the offices of the Challenged Athletes Foundation, five weeks before its biggest fundraiser of the year: the San Diego Triathalon Challenge.

Now  wild fires have forced the cancellation of that event.

Physically challenged athletes are an important part of our community and I urge you to join me in offering to help the CAF rebuild.
