Lee Baxandall, 1935-2008

"Body acceptance is the key. Nude recreation is the way."
This quote from Lee Baxandall, who died on Thanksgiving Day after a battle with Parkinson's Disease, sums up his life's mission. Founder of The Naturist Society, the Naturist Action Committee and The Naturist Education Foundation, Baxandall was also well known for his writing which began with Clothed By The Sun to become what is known today as N magazine.
Arguably the most publicized event in Baxandall's naturist career was the Lee R. Baxandall Bridge, a $500,000 pedestrian overpass in Palm Springs that connected two parts of Desert Shadows Inn, now Desert Sun Resort. The bridge was constructed so the resort's guests could cross the busy road unseen by passing motorists, and media worldwide picked up the story.
Baxandall was the 2004 recipient of AANR's Hall of Fame award, which honors those who have made outstanding contributions to nudism. Pioneers such as Lee Baxandall helped pave the way for social nude recreation.
