Seattle Refuses Nudity Ban
Naked bike rides have become a Seattle tradition, and the city issues permits for a variety of nude events. Yet a few complaints regarding nude cyclists prompted the parks department to reconsider nudity on local beaches and city parks. At a meeting to discuss the matter, the city parks board refused to ban non-offensive nudity, saying that "to limit nudists would be to single them out." Law enforcement can only interfere if someone engages in conduct that's "likely to cause reasonable affront or alarm," and nude events will continue. Considered the most liberal city in the country, it's legal to be nude in Seattle, and the city issues permits for nude picnics, indoor pool rentals and bike rides on a regular basis.

Travel Writer Leaves The Swimsuit Behind
In an article on CNN.com, travel writer Rick Steves says the way many American travelers react to European nudity has long been a frustration for him as a travel guide. Steves, whose series Rick Steves' Europe is airing on PBS, says that "Whether on a Croatian beach, in a Finnish sauna, a Turkish hammam, or a German spa, it can be a fun and liberating experience to go local, leaving your swimsuit behind." Steves tells the story of his visit to the baths in Baden-Baden, afterward "feeling wonderfully naked" under his clothes. Steves is also known for his European travel guidebooks. His company, Europe Through the Back Door, conducts European tours. Click here to read more. |
