Ahoy!
Gobble gobble! It's Thanksgiving week. It's that time of year when I get all sentimental and sappy and go yammering on about all the things that we have to be thankful for. Well, it's true - we have so much to be thankful for! Besides the obvious veritable cornucopia of delights that sailing the Bay and living in this beautiful area bring, throw in the fact that we are adding TWO more beautiful NEW Beneteaus to our already impressive fleet! That's right... TWO more new Beneteaus! A 37 for Alameda and a 34 for Sausalito. They should be available for charter by February. Just in time for the upcoming spring and summer season.
If that's not enough to fill your heart with warmth, consider, if you will, that every breath we take is a blessing. Every sunset. Every ray of sunlight that busts through a cloud. There is so much to be thankful for in every day. I am thankful for all of you and I hope you have a safe and joyful Thanksgiving!

SPITHILL & ORACLE TEAM CLINCH WIN IN SAN DIEGO!
The racing was LIVE on YouTube and the footage was incredible. There are cameras and microphones on every boat, the commentary and the visual graphics are top notch. The production team is upping their game and it shows. If you missed the racing, you should do yourself a favor and spend some time on the America's Cup YouTube page and watch some really exciting racing!
Congratulations to Jimmy Spithill and the Oracle race team.

LIGHTED BOAT PARADES!
Saturday, December 3rd Alameda/Oakland Starting - 5:30pm
Charter a boat and head over to the Estuary to join in the celebration. This year's theme is "Cartoon Christmas" so there should be some festive entries that will be fun for the whole family! If you don't charter a boat, there is good viewing from Pasta Pelican or Jack London Square. If you're a member of a yacht club, you can visit Oakland or Encinal Yacht Clubs for prime viewing.

Saturday, December 10th Sausalito Parade & Fireworks!
This is one of my favorite boat parades in the Bay Area! Mega Yachts get decked to the nines with pyrotechnics, blaring sound systems and intricate costumes! Then, when you've gotten your fill of skillful decorated boats of all shapes and sizes, they put on an amazing display of fireworks for your viewing enjoyment.

SAILING BOOK CLUB
Coming this winter!
Let's read some books about sailing and get together and talk about them! I'm planning for one book a month from January through March. We'll meet in Sausalito where we can share a glass of BYOV (bring your own vino) and chat up the book! I haven't decided on the day of the week or the time, so I will greatly appreciate your feedback on that. Please email Marianne with your suggestions.
Here are the books that I have decided on for this winter. I tried to keep them light and poignant for our first go round. Reading is such a personal experience, so as we get to know one another and our particular tastes, we can branch out a little more.

QUESTION: Why does putting "rail meat" on the windward side of the boat improve with the CE (Center of Effort) and the CLR (Center of Lateral Resistance) of a boat?
ANSWER: The "Talking Ballast" reduces the heel angle by moving the center of gravity to windward. It increases the effectiveness of the keel in that it increases the center of lateral resistance by lowering the keel and the rudder deeper in the water. A secondary effect is that less wind is dumped out of your sail and causes you to therefore go faster. It also makes the hull more effective by flattening the hull in the water. Note: The Oracle-BMW trimaran is able to cant the mast laterally to take advantage of this! Since its speed is dependent upon flying on one outer hull, or ama. Reducing the heel angle also puts the keel more perpendicular to the water's surface. A more perpendicular keel has increased lateral resistance This reduces the slippage to leeward, or leeway. What I don't understand on the Oracle Trike however, are the curved dagger-boards!?!
Can anyone shed some light on this topic for Jim?
