Ahoy!

With holiday music already blaring in the stores and on the radio, it's difficult to not allow the frenzy of the holiday season to creep into your life just a little sooner. I say - REVOLT! I say... occupy a sailboat... maintain your sanity.

Occupy that private sanctuary out on the water that brings clarity, serenity and moments of sheer exhilaration. Let the holiday madness ensue as it may... but be comforted by the fact that you can be on your happy place on the water in a heartbeat.

We're open Black Friday. We can't think of a better way to spend the busiest shopping day of the year than on a boat. Think about it. We'll be here for you when you come to your senses.

LIGHTED BOAT PARADES!

Saturday, December 3rd
Alameda/Oakland
Starting - 5:30pm

Charter a boat and head over to the Estuary to join in the celebration. This year's theme is "Cartoon Christmas" so there should be some festive entries that will be fun for the whole family! If you don't charter a boat, there is good viewing from Pasta Pelican or Jack London Square. If you're a member of a yacht club, you can visit Oakland or Encinal Yacht Clubs for prime viewing.

Boat Parade - Alameda/Oakland - 2006
Saturday, December 10th
Sausalito Parade & Fireworks!

This is one of my favorite boat parades in the Bay Area! Mega Yachts get decked to the nines with pyrotechnics, blaring sound systems and intricate costumes! Then, when you've gotten your fill of skillful decorated boats of all shapes and sizes, they put on an amazing display of fireworks for your viewing enjoyment.

SAILING BOOK CLUB

Coming this winter!

Let's read some books about sailing and get together and talk about them!

I'm planning for one book a month from January through March. We'll meet in Sausalito where we can share a glass of BYOV (bring your own vino) and chat up the book! I haven't decided on the day of the week or the time, so I will greatly appreciate your feedback on that. Please email Marianne with your suggestions.

Here are the books that I have decided on for this winter. I tried to keep them light and poignant for our first go round. Reading is such a personal experience, so as we get to know one another and our particular tastes, we can branch out a little more.

INTRODUCING ~ iSAILBOAT!

No, it's not an app... it's a beautiful new Beneteau 40 and it's the newest addition to our Alameda fleet! She's a two cabin, offshore equipped 40' beauty! Our dock staff is working hard to get her online as soon as possible. We're aiming for the beginning of December. We'll keep you posted!

"We moved to the Bay Area three years ago from St. Louis. After chartering several sailboats from Club Nautique and experiencing the wonderful sailing in the Bay, we decided to buy a boat and join the Club as an owner. My son and I intend to take advantage of the training offered by the Club to "up our game" so that we can enjoy sailing offshore and up and down the California coast.  The name of the boat is iSailboat. She will be outfitted with satellite TV. During the America's Cup races, charterers can not only enjoy the views from the water, but also watch the TV coverage.  Anchoring in McCovey Cove for a "tailgate" party and then watching the Giants on HD TV, while enjoying the stadium sounds next door, will add to the experience of a great day's sail.  We are really looking forward to participating in Club Nautique."

NOGGIN BOGGLER

Simply reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. There is no need to change the subject line, just hit reply and send your answer. Club Nautique will choose the winner for this week's Boggler randomly from all of the correct entries. Please respond by 8am on Monday, November 21st.

QUESTION:
Why does putting "rail meat" on the windward side of the boat improve with the CE (Center of Effort) and the CLR (Center of Lateral Resistance) of a boat?

NOGGIN BOGGLER WINNER!

We selected a winner from the entries submitted. Thank you to all who participated but ultimately we can only have one winner.

Congratulations to winner of an attractive Club Nautique Hat, Markus Fromherz!

QUESTION/ANSWER:
We showed you an image of three sails in different states of "trim" and asked you to describe the actions needed to get each into proper trim. We were so proud that practically all of the multiple responses got it right!

A. No change is needed - your sail is in proper trim.
B. Move your fairlead or jib car back to flatten the foot of the sail allowing for a smoother sail.
C. Move your fairlead or jib car forward to create more tension on the leach of the sail and create more optimal sail shape for better sail trim.

TODAY'S TIP!

Todays TipBeing able to effectively use the VHF radio to communicate with the Coast Guard and surrounding vessels while handling a man overboard situation is very important.

1. Practice being able to easily identify your position with landmarks. Latit
Using the VHFude and Longitude are great, but if there is anyone nearby to offer assistance, they're more likely going to identify with "A half a mile West of Alcatraz" than a Lat/Long number they'd have to plot on a chart.

2. Teach your crew how to operate the VHF. If you're the only one who knows how to use it and you're in the water, that's not really going to help the situation.

CORRECTION: Bareboat - not Basic Cruising - Graduates. Congratulations gang. We know you worked really hard to get here. Now you can take out the BIG boats!

Our Rogue "Humpers" are stickin' to it! They keep heading out on Wednesday nights for some amazing nighttime goodness! Rod shared some really cool footage of sailing along Fisherman's Wharf at night... when I figure out how to share video clips I'll be sure to post it.

They're heading out again this week so let us know if you want to jump on board!

Check out Steve's technique! He puts his GoPro camera on a boat hook to get this effect. It's a great way to take a self portrait! Thanks for sharin' Steve! Looks like you and Hilary had a great day on the water!

Arthur Z. spent the weekend out the gate on Wanderin' Bear. Thanks for the photos Arthur! It looks like you had a wonderful sail!

Rod sent in these shots from his audit on a Basic Cruising class this past weekend. This looks like a GREAT day out on the water. Thanks for the photos Rod!

The happy graduates with their instructor, Aki.
