Ahoy!

Wow! Can you believe the incredible Indian Summer we're enjoying? We hope you've been able to take advantage of the fantastic weather and get out on the water. It's rare when sailing on San Francisco Bay can be considered "balmy" and you don't want to miss it!

Speaking of getting out on the water, Winter Rates kick in today, which means the cost of chartering just dropped by 20% across the board. Just to give you an example, if two couples were to charter a 2-stateroom Hunter 320 for a weekend, the member cost is only $40 per person per day. Or to carry this to ridiculous extremes, that's only $1.70 per hour. That's probably less than it would cost to ride a bus by the hour and sailing is a heck of a lot greener, not to mention, more fun!

Have you checked out the new Sausalito location yet? We think it's quite wonderful. It's nearly twice as big, has quiet classrooms, the marina slips have fingers on both sides, the fairways are bigger, it's closer to the bay, several excellent restaurants are close by, plus West Marine and Molly Stone's supermarket, and there's lots of parking. Come see it during our Open House this Saturday, November 5th from 3-6 pm and we'll ply you with food and drink. Hope to see you there!

QUESTION:

As and Club Nautique Skipper, you know how serious we take your training. Crew Overboard recoveries are performed in every power and sailing certification class we offer. Here are a few questions to get you thinking about the procedures. If you can't answer these questions, you may want to be coming to us for assistance.

CN Skipper's Crew Overboard Quiz:

 1. You are performing a quick turn recovery:  After throwing flotation and shouting "crew overboard" what is your first point of sail?

2. You decide to use the Quick Stop Recovery method: After throwing flotation and shouting "crew overboard" what do you do next?

3. In the bay when performing a Crew Overboard Recovery, what side of the boat should you approach your victim on.

4. You are performing a Quick Turn Recovery and upon the final approach you are pointing too high and can't sail the boat back to the victim. What did you probably do wrong?

5. What is the number one rule when you have a crew that falls overboard or you spot another person in the water needing your help?

Todays TipTODAY'S TIP!

When doing the Quick Stop recovery method of man overboard recovery, once you get your victim to your beam, use the wheel as a "sighting mechanism" to help you to see that you are keeping them at your beam.

To help you understand more clearly, what I wanted to say was "Gun-barrel", but "sighting mechanism" is a lot less graphic... I mean... you just threw the person overboard, now you're going to shoot at them? What the heck kinda deal is that?! Seriously, however, "Gun-barrel" might more clearly illustrate the point. Use the wheel as a gun barrel with a sight at the end to aim at your victim. It will help you to keep them steadily off of your beam until you go through the jibe and head towards them.
