Ahoy!

I have recently been pondering the difference between the cruising vs. the racing sailor. Racers simply don't see the point of going out for a leisurely sail and cruisers don't understand what's so great about beating yourself up and getting all stressed out.

I can personally fall on either side of the boom on this one - which is not that shocking as my motto is: "As long as it floats!" I may be a bit more of a boat addict than most, so for me it's more of what kind of mood I'm in. I can totally understand enjoying healthy competition while honing your skills with a very obvious yardstick by which to measure yourself. I can also relate to just sitting back and enjoying a day of sailing.

The problem is that racing really does force you to focus more acutely on getting the best out of your boat, so it arguably makes you a better sailor. Don't fear, my cruising brethren - just because you're not beating towards the finish line doesn't mean you can't hold your head high! Trim in those sails, pull up those fenders and for gosh sakes, don't spill my wine!

Whatever side of the boom you fall on, we can all agree that sailing is an empowering sport. We hope you're getting to enjoy it as much as we do!

NOGGIN BOGGLER ANSWER

Congratulations to Markus Fromherz. Markus dazzled us with his wisdom and has won a coveted Club Nautique Hat.

QUESTION PROVIDED BY ROD WITEL (Thanks Rod!):

In the photo below, Rod Witel is outside of a restaurant in Croatia. If he were a sailboat heading away from port, and the restaurant were the port, what's "wrong" with this picture and why?

ANSWER:

There is nothing "wrong" with the photo. Rod is in Croatia which resides in Region A. of the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). The IALA identifies which marks define the port side and which marks define the starboard side in the conventional direction. In Croatia you can use the pneumonic "green, right, returning". The US is in region B. and you use "red, right, returning".

TODAY'S TIP

Todays Tip

LOOK at the result of what it is you are doing.

Don't just load a line on a winch and Willy-Nilly start cranking - those lines are attached to something! Watch the effect that you are having on the lines that you are pulling. If you are trimming a sheet, look at the sail! If you are hoisting a halyard, look up to see if you have put on the proper tension.
