Ahoy!

Crossing guards are back on the street corners. That's right, it's back to school time! The official season of summer is coming to a close just when it seems as though it's finally arrived. Time sure does fly! Fortunately for us, this is usually one of the most beautiful times of the year. There are still plenty of good times ahead.

Meanwhile, chatting with my friends and family from back East this past week has been like a tale out of the Old Testament; the only thing missing were the locusts. An earthquake shocked the eastern seaboard then hurricane Irene wreaked havoc up and down the coast. After the hurricane ravaged the area, tornado warnings left people without power huddled in their basements. Our most sincere sympathy goes out to those who suffered damage from Irene. We hope you are back on your feet soon.

So to go out on a positive note... LOOK OUT THE WINDOW!! If it's not beautiful, you must not be looking at the docks in Alameda... I'm just sayin!

BEST WISHES TO THOMAS - WELCOME JOE!

Our current School Director, Thomas Perry, has been offered a position at ATT & will be returning there effective September 1st. We appreciate Thomas's service & wish him fair winds in his new position at his old home. He will continue to teach for Club Nautique on weekends.

Joe Brandt has accepted the position of Acting School Director. I say "acting" because Joe is retired and enjoying it. He will fill the role until he can search for, find and train a permanent replacement.

Joe began working with us on Friday, August 26. Please join us in welcoming Joe to the crew. We know you'll be as glad as we are to have him aboard.

DONATE SAILS FOR A GOOD CAUSE

The Leukemia Cup Regatta is looking for white sails that are no longer in use.  They will be utilizing them for the weekend events on October 1st & 2nd, and are seeking your help!  If you or anyone you know has white sails they can spare, please contact Erin Lutsko of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.  Club Nautique will be collecting the sails through September 9th, and donating them to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in support of The Leukemia Cup Regatta.  All you need to do is bring them to the club, and we will take care of the rest.  Thank you very much for helping us support blood cancer research and The Leukemia Cup Regatta!

It's never too early to start planning and fund raising. Club Nautique would like to enter several boats into the Leukemia Cup Regatta to raise funds of this great cause. The regatta is on October 2nd. We are putting together teams to compete head to head not only in fund raising, but also on the water.

Whether you get on the boat or just donate, you'll be filled with pride in helping raise funds to help try and put an end to blood cancer.

Please dperry@clubnautique.net if you're interested in joining in this FUN and worthwhile adventure.

ANSWER: The cup was "won" officially only 3 times but as for how many years it was successfully retained by the US, was 29 times.

NOGGIN BOGGLER

Simply reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. There is no need to change the subject line, just hit reply and send your answer. Club Nautique will choose the winner for this week's Boggler randomly from all of the correct entries. Please respond by 8am on Monday, September 5th.

QUESTION: Courtesy of John Carroll

You want to travel directly up wind to a destination 25 n. mi distant. For the conditions expected, your high performance sloop can sail 45 degrees off the true wind with 5 knots of boat speed or 50 degrees off the true wind with 6 knots of boat speed. Assuming no current, no leeway "instantaneous tacks", perfect navigation and constant conditions, which gives the faster passage -- and by how much?

Hint: the solution can be found by graphical, geometric or trigonometric methods.  Good luck!

Which way should we go?

Winner will receive an attractive Club Nautique Hat.

TODAY'S TIP

Todays Tip

Take a moment to prepare yourself and your crew.

We may have shared this one before but it's always a good one to remember. Before you do any maneuvers where you expect people to work together as a team, stop, take a moment to make sure everyone is on the same page. Make sure everyone knows what is about to happen and that everyone understands what their roll will be. This is helpful when putting away sails, jibing and pulling into and away from the dock - to name a few. Even if you're performing some of these tasks on your own, give yourself a moment to run down in your mind what needs to happen when.

CLUB NAUTIQUE NEEDS NEW BOATS!

THIS JUST IN... Beneteau gets recognized as being one of the best in customer satisfaction.

Click here to read the article.

Would you like to own a new sail or power boat and use charter income and income tax savings to help pay for it? If this concept is interesting to you, let us share a few amazing statistics with you. Belle Soeurs, our new Beneteau 34, which is owned by a retired Big 4 accounting firm partner, has broken every record ever set by a new boat in our fleet. In her first 3 months in the fleet, she chartered at an annual rate of 164 days. As of this writing, she has 25 days of reservations on the books and she's just getting warmed up. Most members haven't even seen her yet (she's rarely sitting in her slip to be seen), let alone had the opportunity to sail her.

To put this in perspective, most boats create positive cash flow with 50-75 days of charter per year. Belle Soeurs is more than doubling that! Want some more good reasons to put a boat in the fleet now? Here are just a few major reasons:
  • Our fleet is older than it's ever been and we need to bring in new boats & move old ones out.
  • Boat loan interest rates are the lowest they've been in history. We just did a charter boat loan at 4.25% fixed for 15 years with no points, fees, or penalties.
  • There are a limited number of Beneteaus in factory inventory on sale with factory discounts up to $26,500. These boats are 2012 hull numbers at 2011 pricing.
  • The America's Cup is coming to San Francisco Bay. What do you think that's going to do to charter activity?
  • If you have a large bonus or want to exercise stock options in 2011 and shelter them from taxes, you can write off up to 100% of the boat purchase this year. This option expires on 12/31/11. This write off is not subject to alternative minimum tax calculations!
  • Charter boat owners get free memberships and free dues and of course, they don't pay to sail their own boats.
  • If you want the tax benefits in 2011, you must take delivery in 2011 and for some models, deliveries are close to year end. It's time to get your order in now.

There are more good reasons, but you get the idea. If you'd like detailed information on how this can work for YOU, contact Jerry, Dave, or Don, today!
