Ahoy!

As a sailor, you have to be adaptable to change. The best sailors are able to identify the need to make adjustments and execute those changes quickly and efficiently. Club Nautique is making some changes and we think they are very much for the better.

After 26 years in the same Sausalito location, we've finally found bigger and better quarters. Effective October 1, we'll be relocating to 400 Harbor Drive, Suite D, right in the heart of Clipper Yacht Harbor, next to the entrance to KKMI.

There are some big plusses to our new location; larger, fully enclosed (quieter) classrooms, a nice big clubhouse, fingers on both sides of the boat slips, wide, well-protected marina fairways, several excellent restaurants within a block, Molly Stone's supermarket two blocks away, West Marine one block away, closer to the bay, deeper water.

We'll have an Open House once we're settled in, but no need to wait for that. Once we move in we'll be glad to see you!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE AMERICA'S CUP!

Yesterday was the birthday of the America's Cup. Named after the yacht "America", it's made of ornately decorated sterling silver and it's the only trophy to travel under armed guard and be stored in a secret location. At 160 years old yesterday, it's also the oldest trophy to be awarded in modern sports.

This year, the America's Cup World Series is being held in various sailing meccas around the globe. So far, the Kiwis are reigning victorious. You can check out the Americas Cup website for all kinds of great information and loads of racing action.

NOGGIN BOGGLER WINNER

We selected a winner from the entries submitted. Thank you to all who participated but ultimately we can only have one winner.

Congratulations Patrick North for winning last week's challenge. Patrick will receive a new Club Nautique hat!

QUESTION:

From Fleet Manager, Jerry Nassoiy

The "three minute rule" is a simple way to calculate how much ground you will cover in a period of time. It's particularly helpful in eyeballing how much time you have before say, having to tack, or hitting a large object.

Three minute rule - However fast you're going, put two zeros after it and that's how far, in yards, you will travel in 3 minutes.

Let's say that I was traveling at 5 knots and there's buoy in my path in about 400 yards (4 football fields). It only takes me three minutes to put on my foulies - do I have three minutes to go down below and put on my foulies before I need to jibe? Explain your answer.

ANSWER:

Do not go below to put on your Foulies!  Two "0"s after your speed of 5 knots is 500 yards in 3 minutes, which is 100 yards PAST the buoy.

TODAY'S TIP

Todays Tip

Add a few extra "cup holders" to your sailbag.

One of the more common comments that we get on our boats is that there are not enough cup holders. Often times, in cockpits, the traditional cup holders get taken up by cameras and hand held GPS and VHF units. That ends up leaving no secure place for your water bottle. The bottle holder, like the one shown, can be purchased at REI for under $5. This way, you can attach your beverage to your person so that you can stay properly hydrated!

CLUB NAUTIQUE NEEDS NEW BOATS!

Would you like to own a new sail or power boat and use charter income and income tax savings to help pay for it? If this concept is interesting to you, let us share a few amazing statistics with you. Belle Soeurs, our new Beneteau 34, which is owned by a retired Big 4 accounting firm partner, has broken every record ever set by a new boat in our fleet. In her first 3 months in the fleet, she chartered at an annual rate of 164 days. As of this writing, she has 25 days of reservations on the books and she's just getting warmed up. Most members haven't even seen her yet (she's rarely sitting in her slip to be seen), let alone had the opportunity to sail her.

To put this in perspective, most boats create positive cash flow with 50-75 days of charter per year. Belle Soeurs is more than doubling that! Want some more good reasons to put a boat in the fleet now? Here are just a few major reasons:
  • Our fleet is older than it's ever been and we need to bring in new boats & move old ones out.
  • Boat loan interest rates are the lowest they've been in history. We just did a charter boat loan at 4.25% fixed for 15 years with no points, fees, or penalties.
  • There are a limited number of Beneteaus in factory inventory on sale with factory discounts up to $26,500. These boats are 2012 hull numbers at 2011 pricing.
  • The America's Cup is coming to San Francisco Bay. What do you think that's going to do to charter activity?
  • If you have a large bonus or want to exercise stock options in 2011 and shelter them from taxes, you can write off up to 100% of the boat purchase this year. This option expires on 12/31/11. This write off is not subject to alternative minimum tax calculations!
  • Charter boat owners get free memberships and free dues and of course, they don't pay to sail their own boats.
  • If you want the tax benefits in 2011, you must take delivery in 2011 and for some models, deliveries are close to year end. It's time to get your order in now.

There are more good reasons, but you get the idea. If you'd like detailed information on how this can work for YOU, contact Jerry, Dave, or Don, today!
