Our Memorial Day Weekend was quite eventful, exciting and fun - inside the Bay and out. We'll have to give a full report in a separate email as we are still regaining our land legs and it will take some time to sift through all the great photos. I'm also waiting to hear other people's accounts as each boat had a very different experience. Speaking personally, I can say that I'm pleased with the experience that I gained. I got to hang out with some great people in some beautiful places and I was proud to be a part of a hearty crew and such a fun flotilla!
Well, tomorrow is June, believe it or not. While summer has been taking its time to kick into gear, that's sure not stopping Club Nautiquers from learning to sail, enjoying beautiful days on the water and meeting new sailing buddies. Don't forget to get out there and make the best of every day!
If you need a reason to go sailing - and we're always looking for excuses - it's rumored that the AC45s are going to be practicing on the Bay as early as next week. We'll let you know when we know more.

After spending a weekend on the high seas you tend to get reminded of the simple common sense rules that make sailing safe and more fun for everyone. This weekend was no exception. Be prepared! When heading out into predicted heavy conditions, put on the proper gear ahead of time as you are NOT going to want to have to go down below to put on more clothes. Don't forget to grab your hat, all your necessary safety gear, your water-resistant camera to send photos to Keeping You Current, and don't forget to apply that sunscreen!

Question: You're in the slip in Sausalito on board Bear Boat pre-cruising your boat. In the next slip over, your friend is pre-cruising Anne's Turn. You mention to your friend that your depth sounder is reading 8.4ft and ask if they have the same reading. Your friend tells you that that their depth sounder is reading 1.9ft. Let's assume that the two instruments are in perfect working order. Why are the two readings so different? What could you do to check to see what the actual depth of the water is?
Answer: One is calibrated to the waterline and one to the bottom of the keel. You can check the actual depth with a weighted line called a "lead line" that has knots to mark increments of feet. It's always a good idea to check which way your boat is calibrated. As a rule, Club Nautique sets our boats to the depth beneath the keel, but sometimes folks will change that setting so don't assume.
Rod Witel created this homemade lead line out of twine and a lead fishing weight. He tied knots every 5 feet and he uses it to check the calibration of depth sounders on charter boats.
CORPORATE TEAM BUILDING!
Why not apply the teamwork you've learned at Club Nautique to improve your Company's productivity? Our Team Builders are designed to do just that.
"My team unanimously said that this was the best offsite they had. Not only did they have a lot of fun, but because the boats could only be successfully operated by working as a team, everyone also gave the event high marks for team building."D.G. - Clorox
