Greetings!

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and while it's a great kick-off to summer and a nice long weekend, we should remember to take pause and reflect on the real reason for the holiday. In memory of all who died while serving our country, we thank you.

Being the sucker that I am for heart wrenching videos, I believe that this version of Amazing Grace is bound to make you want to go hug a soldier - warning: you may want to be ready with a tissue.

We'll be sure to raise a glass to our fallen heroes while out on our weekend cruises! Eighteen boats are headed out the gate and five confirmed inside, it's sure to be a festive weekend. We hope that you have fun whatever you do!

TODAYS TIP!

Use proper raft-up etiquette

Todays TipIn protected harbors, rafting-up with other boats can be a lot of fun! There are a few things to remember to make it more safe and enjoyable for everyone.
  • The boat at anchor will determine which side they want you to approach.
  • The approaching boat should provide the fenders and dock lines.
  • LOOK UP! Watch your rigs.
  • Bring something fun/festive to share with your neighbors.
  • When crossing over a boat to get to the boat serving the margaritas, go forward of the mast, don't pass through the cockpit unless invited to do so.
  • When peeling off of the raft-up, take a moment and have a plan. Talk to your neighbors to make sure everyone is ready to go.
  • If it's a large raft-up, let the boats down current/wind peel off first.

NOGGIN BOGGLER!

Simply reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. There is no need to change the subject line, just hit reply and send your answer. Club Nautique will choose the winner for this week's Boggler randomly from all of the correct entries. Please respond by noon on Monday, May 30th.

Question:

You're in the slip in Sausalito on board Bear Boat pre-cruising your boat. In the next slip over, your friend is pre-cruising Anne's Turn. You mention to your friend that your depth sounder is reading 8.4ft and ask if they have the same reading. Your friend tells you that that their depth sounder is reading 1.9ft. Let's assume that the two instruments are in perfect working order. Why are the two readings so different? What could you do to check to see what the actual depth of the water is?

Winner will receive an attractive Club Nautique hat!

Question:

You want to visit  S.E. Farallon Island, intending to motor sail out to and then sail from the ship channel's buoy "G1". The rhumb line from the buoy to the island is  245 M. The forecast is for winds from 300 degrees at 15 knots all day. In these conditions, you can trim your boat to an apparent wind 40 degrees off the bow while maintaining a boat speed of 5 knots. Pointing any higher will dramatically reduce boat speed. In this situation, the angle between the real wind and the apparent wind is about 13 degrees.
  a) Assuming the winds are as forecast, what is your probable heading on a starboard tack from G1?
  b) Eventually you may have to tack. Again assuming the winds are as forecast, what is your probable heading on a port tack ?

Answer:
Solution:
On a starboard tack, with the apparent wind 40 degrees off the bow, the real wind is 40 + 13 =  53 degrees off the bow. So the heading is 53 degrees CCW from the wind direction:  300 - 53 = 247.
   a) The wind direction in the forecast is given w.r.t.  true north, so the  boat heading would be 247 T or 232 M.
   b) After tacking, the heading will be 53 degrees CW from the wind direction: 300 + 53 = 353 T or 338 M.
Note: the tacking angle would be 106 degrees.

SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION!

Just got a new client?  Just closed a major project successfully? Show your team how much they're appreciated with a fun, Photo Treasure Hunt day on the Bay.

We tried other programs, but this was the first Team Builder that lasted well beyond the day of fun on the water. Even months later my group still challenges one another to see who will be victorious on our next outing. The Club Nautique program is healthy competition at its finest with each participant having something to share and with much laughter." B.M. - Lucent Technologies
