Greetings!
Laissez les bon temps rouler! It's Fat Tuesday Ya'll! So load up, heathens . . . the fast begins tomorrow. Traditionally, for some, tomorrow begins a forty day period of fasting and repentance. Being a pleasure-seeking biped unit, this kind of tradition doesn't sit well with me, but I recognize the value of reflection and repentance. We could all use a bit of that from time to time to cleanse the soul. What would I give up if I really felt like I needed to make good on some transgressions? Well, beer, cheese and sailing come to mind. But being human, I immediately start to rationalize . . . what if I were only mildly in need of repentance . . . what if I could not drink beer and eat cheese while sailing? That would show me! Perhaps this line of thinking is a perfect example of why my soul needs saving in the first place. Whether you're repentant or not, there is something to be said for sailing - it lends itself to introspection and reflection as you cruise along on your boat, one with nature. Give yourself a treat . . . join us for our Chowder Charter, go for a sail and cleanse your soul! |

Congratulations to Meleah Larroca! Meleah told us that she got the answer to the boggler from our Winter Wednesday seminar! Good detective work Meleah.
QUESTION:
Approximately what height would a breaking wave on the beam need to be in order to cause capsize risk to an average 40-foot sail boat at sea? ANSWER: 12-feet. A breaking wave height that is 30% of a vessel's length is enough to cause serious capsize risk to many sail boats when it is taken on the beam. A breaking wave (plunging breaker) that is 60% of a its length will comfortably capsize nearly any type vessel of that length. That said, these would be considered "freak" waves even in heavy weather (sub hurricane force) when sailing across oceans. As a matter of fact you could easily sail around the world and never see anything more than a 4-foot breaker. You're more likely to see a breaking wave of this size while trying to cross a "closed" and dangerous bar during heavy winter storms along the northwest coast.
