Greetings!

It's March! Wow... where does the time go?! That means that shorter days will soon blossom into longer evenings and bring pleasant twilight sails past the six o'clock hour. March also means the beginning of our Coastal Passage Making (CPM) season. We'll soon be hearing tales of coastal cruising adventures rising up from the docks.

Most seasoned sailors will tell you that the key to a successful voyage is preparation, preparation, preparation. The sea is a fickle mistress my friends... she'll throw any number of challenges at you. The more tricks you have up your sleeve, the better off you'll be. Join us this Wednesday evening for a discussion about heavy weather sailing and how and when to deploy valuable heavy weather tools. You'll be sure to gain a tip or two to stow in the sleeve of your foulies.

Hope to see you around the clubhouse sometime soon!

QUESTION:

If a crew member is shivering, they seem to be dizzy and have a glassy stare and you think that they are suffering from hypothermia, name at least one thing that you should do, and one thing that you should definitely NOT do.

ANSWER:

Obviously, based on the severity of your crew member's condition, you would act accordingly. Never underestimate the seriousness of hypothermia. If one of your crew goes in the cold waters of San Francisco, and they exhibit signs of hypothermia, you should get them to see a medical professional as soon as possible. Treatments for hypothermia that ARE recommended include: moving them to a warm place, removing wet clothing, gradually warming them with blankets, dry clothes or hot water bottles wrapped in a towel or a blanket. Treatments that ARE NOT recommended include: warming them too quickly by submersing them in hot water or giving them alcoholic beverages.

Pip's response, while humorous, got the gist of the question:
What you should do...
Get naked with them in a sleeping bag.
What you should not do...
Open a bottle of wine and get naked with them in sleeping bag.

TODAY'S TIP - By Arnstein Mustad

Todays Tip
Consider a stern-to anchor in heavy weather

There are many things you should consider when anchoring in heavy weather (41 knots and above).  One of those important considerations is how you should position your boat relative to the anchor.  For many vessels the best method is to anchor with your stern pointing to your anchor(s).  By anchoring off your stern you'll reduce sailing on the hook to near nil, ride steady, have less chafing issues, and reduce shock loading greatly.  Yes, your cockpit will get wet and the sounds of slapping waves on the hull will be irritating, but at least you'll be safer.

To learn about this and more heavy weather tactics, join us for our Winter Wednesday seminar this week where Arnstein will speak about preparation and tools for heavy weather (please R.S.V.P.).
