Greetings!
It was an exciting week in the sailing community. First, many of you got to attend our Winter Wednesday seminar given by Allan and Rina Alexopulos with commentary by their lovely daughter Alyssa. Thanks so much to Allan and Rina for all of the great information and insights into what it takes to head out the Gate and turn left. We learned many tips and tricks, including this week's tip from Allan. As if that wasn't enough excitement, a clubhouse full of folks from the sailing community got together to discuss the thrilling events that will be surrounding the America's Cup races in San Francisco. While delivering his presentation, one of the representatives from the Oracle Racing team let it slip that the actual boat that won the cup is on its way to the Bay! Click here to find out more. Are you ready to get in on the action? Our Basic Cruising Skipper's Package can get you sailing in just four weekends! |

NOGGIN BOGGLER WINNER!
We selected our favorite from the answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize! Congratulations to Shaune Price! Winner of a stylish Club Nautique hat!
Shaune waves from the rigging of his Tayana 37, Liberty QUESTION (CHALLENGE):
The Washington Post Mensa Invitational asks readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. For example: 1. Reintarnation (n.): Coming back to life as a hillbilly. 2. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. This week's boggler: Create your own new Nautical words. Consider sailing related terms like; cunningham, outhaul, dodger, stanchion, fairlead, barometer, bulkhead, galley, displacement, chainplates, helmsman, overpowered, no-go-zone, rhumb line, starboard, tiller, transom, traveler, winch, etc. ANSWER (WINNER): Several of the responses were quite entertaining albeit a bit on the edgy side and not ready for prime time. Our winner won unanimously and is definitely being added to our personal nautical dictionary! fowline - [faux-lin ] noun - a fake bowline.Used in a sentence: "Honey, you ain't gonna hold diddly with that there fowline!" Runners up: Sulkhead - the surface you lean against to pout when you're not getting enough helm time Companionsway - the act of swaggering down the stairs during a heavy swell Napigation - the act of falling asleep while navigating.

TODAY'S TIP - From Allan Alexopulos' talk on Winter Wednesday When trouble shooting a problem, start with the simplest thing first, not the most difficult! When things go wrong on a boat, we tend to immediately assume the worst case scenario. Don't forget to start from the beginning. If the engine isn't spitting out water, don't launch straight into impeller replacement mode, start with checking the thru-hull. You'll most likely save yourself a lot of stress.
