Greetings!
Yesterday we celebrated the life of an extraordinary man. He was an inspiration of courage and strength and we can all learn from his teachings . . . "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward." ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
May we all strive to constantly keep moving forward!
Sometimes the first step is the hardest but it could be as simple as attending a seminar that speaks to your inner adventurer. Don't forget to join us this Wednesday to hear about the transformation of Allan and Rina Alexopulos who went from not knowing how to sail to cruising the world.

WINTER WEDNESDAY SEMINARS!
Enjoy another great season of seminars to keep you on your sailing toes! We will be alternating between Alameda and Sausalito this year to give the folks in the North Bay a chance to get in some learning.
The next seminar will be:
Wednesday, January 19th 6pm - 8pm Alameda From Newbie to New Zealand
A case study on how to leverage Club Nautique to get you and your mate there together. Club members Allan and Rina Alexopulos will explain how the club helped them prepare for their two year journey across the South Pacific to New Zealand. Allan will explain how both formal and informal training helped them successfully handle the challenges faced crossing the pacific, including the loss of their rudder 40 miles off the New Zealand coast in 30 knot winds and growing seas. Rina will explain how her training gave her the confidence to handle their Hunter 466 in extreme situations and become a true partner in all aspects of boat management. FREE! Everyone welcome. Please call to reserve your seat today! 510-865-4700Click here to learn more about our Winter Wednesday Seminars

NOGGIN BOGGLER WINNER!
We selected our winner randomly from the correct answers submitted. Don't miss your chance to dazzle us with your knowledge and win a prize! Congratulations to Alexis Midon! Winner of a stylish Club Nautique hat!
Alexis assured us he put on his life jacket just after this photo was taken. Question by John Carroll: Captain Precision is out on the open ocean in a steady 15 knot wind in his new Beneteau 70. He senses that the anemometer at the top of his 100 ft tall mast is reading significantly higher than what he feels the wind to be in the cockpit. Taking his trusty hand held anemometer he takes several readings and indeed the mast head speed measurements are 30 to 40% higher than the hand held instrument's readings. Rate the following to explain his observations; ordered from most likely to least likely: A. One or both of the instruments are out of calibration. B. the mast head speeds are "pumped up" by the swaying of the mast in the waves and swells. C. the speed differences are real. D. The wind reaching the cockpit instrument is partially blocked by the bimini-dodger. Answer: C, B, D, A The most likely explanation is C: the real wind speed does typically increase by 30-35% from 10 feet to 100 feet above the surface. Even with low wave heights, the rocking of the boat will cause the mast head to sweep out fairly large arcs, movement which is measured as wind speed by the anemometer there. (Note: in very light wind situations, the mast head measured wind speed might be mostly this effect.) There is probably some interference with the wind flow to the open cockpit caused by the boat itself but that effect will be small -- unless one deliberately stands in the shelter of the dodger. Instrument calibration errors are not likely to exceed 5% for either anemometer -- unless one or both have been physically abused or dipped in honey.

NOGGIN BOGGLER
Simply reply to this email with your answer to the following nautical Noggin-Boggler. There is no need to change the subject line, just hit reply and send your answer. Club Nautique will choose the winner for this week's Boggler randomly from all of the correct entries. Please respond by noon on Monday, January 24th. The Washington Post Mensa Invitational asks readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are some of the winners: 1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.. 2. Ignoranus (n.): A person who's both stupid and an asshole. 3. Intaxication (n.): Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with. 4. Reintarnation (n.): Coming back to life as a hillbilly. 5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. This week's boggler: Create your own new Nautical words. Consider sailing related terms like; cunningham, outhaul, dodger, stanchion, fairlead, barometer, bulkhead, galley, displacement, chainplates, helmsman, overpowered, no-go-zone, rhumb line, starboard, tiller, transom, traveler, winch, etc. Winner receives an attractive Club Nautique hat.
