The QUESTION:
What year was the last America's Cup Challenge held on American soil and how many years had it been held here?
The WRONG ANSWER: The America's Cup was won by the Australians in 1983. It had been held on American soil since it's inception in 1857!
The CORRECT ANSWER: The last year it was held here was in 1995, not 1983. It was lost to Australia in 1983 but Dennis Conner won it back in '87. It was then successfully defended again in '88 and '92 and lost to New Zealand in '95. So add another 8 years so the total that it had been held here was 134 years with a 4 year vacation in Australia. Incidentally, Tom Blackaller for StFYC was one of the potential defenders in '92. Tom's team plus Buddy Melges for Chicago YC (at the young age of about 64) and the Canadian challenger all held practice sessions on SF Bay in early spring before the ice had melted in Chicago and Canada. Encinal YC held a week long series of races featuring all three boats on the Estuary as a fund raiser for Tom Blackaller. After each race the crews would pub crawl estuary restaurants which had agreed to donate to Tom's effort. It was a fabulous event.
